P-51 Mirror

Recommended Posts

I have no doubt that someone here knows the answer to this...

When did the Mustang go from the external round mirror to the internal rectangular one along the canopy rail? (an example of what I'm referring to is seen in the Kermit Weeks video that is frequently posted)

Seems to have been a largely Pacific thing, which is the same mirror placement that the Navy used.

ETO Mustangs had a wide variety of external mirrors, 1 central round mirror, 1 central rectangular mirror with an aerodynamic fairing, twin mickey mouse mirrors and 1 offset round mirror, and all seemed to have been done by crew chiefs to the pilots preference.

The last pic in below is quite unique since the pilot has likely 3 external round mirrors, 2 can be seen, 1 on the top and one hanging on the left hand side of the canopy.

Personally I wish they would have used the rectangular mirror like on the P-38, much better view behind imo.

Wish we could pick our mirror location or have 2 like on many Mustangs. Always liked this custom mirror job.
