The Thursday Night Fly-In

Recommended Posts

I love the way people are flying in these missions.  There is a lot more group flying than I remember, and dogfights are happening with great intensity and disappearing as quickly as they began.  It has a wonderful WWI feel.

Agreed.

Great fun last night - one particular dogfight sticks in mind....a flight of between eight to ten Germans vs. a flight of seven SPADs....halfway into the fight a flight of five S.E.5as arrives and dives in. Cinematic stuff!

Obviously the work of some amateur lol.

IMO the appropriate threads should be pinned to the top of the FC general discussions tab.

Agreed. On Thursdays in RoF we found tactics shifted on both sides to more grouping up and flying in flights. It's good to see that taking place in FC now.

This week I found that the more tactically aware enemy plus the cloud layer created a tricky, but immersive experience.

That big engagement with 12 or 13 entente against 8 Central was classic, though at no time did it evolve into a messy furball, more like a series of deadly, cut-n-thrusts followed by standoffs and repositioning.

A couple of J30 CL2s gave us a fright towards the end, recalling some of our classic scraps with their 2 seaters.

Great flying all. Really looking forward were to next week.

Here's a livestream replay. Unfortunately YouTube must have changed something (maybe related to the Kids content declaration!) and I had to create a new stream. So this one misses our first patrol, which had a classic moment attacking a Dr1 and Pfalz.

Greetings All!

This Thursday 20/02/20 we should be flying on the FC JG1 Server.

Last week's session was huge and with FC on sale we think this week will see good numbers too.

I'm not sure what JG1 have planned, but the last few sessions on their server have seen lots of fast action. However they might go back to the moving front map, so be prepared!

Times as follows:
EU time: 8PM - Late GMT

US time: 8PM - Late Eastern Time

Stats Server is here http://stats.jg1.org:8000/en/

All welcome as usual and you can find TeamSpeak and Discord channels earlier in this thread. 3PG's TS is available for use also at US103.enjinvoice.com.

3rd PG Live stream should be up by 8:30pm Eastern https://www.youtube.com/user/PaulLMF

Look forward to seeing you all there!

A bunch of us are going to J5 Flugpark because we can't quite figure out what's going on with the FC JG1 server. There were friendly and enemy bases all over the place...

Great fun tonight, and a very busy front! Jasta 30's D7s and Halbs made an appearance, as well as SCG (Good to see even more of those guys coming into FC!), JG1 and some other Huns! We also crossed paths a few times with Shamrock and his band of S.E.5as, and did a bit of Bosche-hunting together.

We'd initially planned to go over the lines and stir up some trouble - but we could barely get out onto the mud for all the Bosches coming over to our side to fight! We did have a good dust-up in the mud with JG1 in the end, though....which ended the night in explosive fashion, with one of our rookies colliding with myself and the Dr.1 I was attacking! Sadly, the other two planes folded up and fell to earth, but I was able to land my own ship safely, albeit with a missing aileron and a very crooked wing....

Yesterday was a very strange night for us.  We really had a hard time finding the Hun!

Started off with a successful recon mission, escorting Shamrock in a Bristol.  Met no opposition there. Saw a little bit happening on the way back, but I don't think anything came of it.. Two of us peeled off to investigate but  rejoined formation shortly afterwards. After that we all took up SE5's and went hunting. We ran into you guys with your eagle eyes, who spotted 2 CL2's down low. We moved to intercept - but lost visual.  I believe you guys were able to bounce them.  Had a small scrap with a DR1 who was strafing some ground targets, but he disco'd before we could shoot him down.  There were some other small engagements, I was only indirectly involved and don't have a clear view of them.  Shamrock ended up with a D7 on his tail and did a beautiful job evading until the rest of us got enough bullets into him and his wing came off.

I ended my night in a bad position against a red nosed D7 and dove for home quite shot up.

All said, definitely not a bad night.  Just very different from what we've experienced in the past!

It was the practice map for Flanders in Flames. It has 2 seater bases close to the action to allow for practice without long flights to get there. You should really try these organised events ShamrockOneFive, there were 65 players last Saturday! It was great!

Bloody April will hopefully be next, there are people attending from your TimeZone btw

I've never done the Thursday on the JG1 server. Because the server seemed to be unavailable during the "european" time or because everyone else was in Flugpark anyway.

That was a very odd night. We were on there for what... 2+ hours and my only real contact was with the Fokker D.VII and my SE5a just decided that it would spin and spin and wouldn't respond to any anti-spin countermeasures.

Not sure where all of the blues were but they weren't with us :)

Couldn't quite make out what was going on. There were British bases right next to German ones... Was that the practice map? I know I was looking for something a little more conventional for the Thursday night event. Maybe good to mix it up I suppose! :)

I do fairly well making Thursday night in EST but Sunday afternoons and the other time slots have been a lot harder for me unfortunately. Great to see the enthusiasm. I think many of you know that I'm a pretty big fan of FC Vol 1 and I love flying these big multiplayer events.

They do tend to move the event from server to server. It was just that the JG1 server's practice scenario just didn't seem to resonate with me or many of the others who logged in. The server itself should be very reachable and I'm sure we'll be back on it again sometime.

Great turnout again and awesome to see some new Squad tags like [APAF] and =SFG= in the mix.

Yes we ended up on Flugpark as JG1 server re-rolled to FiF Training at about the time everyone was joining. Apologies for any confusion, but i think everyone transitioned pretty easily.

As Larner mentioned our night just got busier the longer it went and we never had the chance to put all our plans into action. There were quite a lot of high flights of multiple D7s and Dr1s over the mud (apparently, though i couldn't see much until the shooting started), plus the usual low CL2s. The latter often escorted and we ran into our old J30 friends doing just that at Brazieux. One close D7 escort and another quite high. Tricky!

Had a few scraps alongside the SE5as of Shamrock and Wolfpack i think, and Cuban in his Bristol, who attracted plenty of enemy attention but didn't seem to need any help at all!

A lot of fun. Looking forward to next week.

Here's a livestream replay. Timestamps to action coming

Another excellent turnout today. S! To all the pilots who flew. We had a number of large, tough scraps both high altitude and low.

Will try do a short write up in a while, but in meantime here our livestream Replay with timestamps done.

Really enjoying these sessions with the recent uplift in players. Looking at the stats it was strong for a solid 8-10 hrs!

Our evening got off to a slightly farcical start as the whole 3rdPG jumped in SE5as to help Talbot get some footage for a new video. We duly went Hun-side and scrapped with a bunch of D7s, Dr1 and Alb, only for Talbot's game to crash, losing all the recording!

Getting back in SPADs was a relief and Larner, Biddle and Co were soon racking them up. I had one of those nights where i couldn't see anything unless it flew in front of me. Fortunately the Huns obliged with that. It does amaze me though, how some people can not only see the tiniest of distant specks against the ground clutter, but start to recognise the plane type!

Always fun with Klugerman and Cuban along too, the latter really has that Bristol on a string. At one point i was in an SE5 behind a  D7 which was on Cuban's tail and the 3 of us were circling quite tight, but no way could i keep up the turn with them both. Perhaps i should've trimmed the stabiliser for more lift, but i was quite surprised at the time. Fortunately the SE5 has a Lewis gun for times like that ;)

Anyway lots of fun. Looking forward to next week.

Here's a replay of our stream with timestamps to most action points

I only made the first sortie for our guys but the night looked absolutely INSANE...

There's a new Staffel on the front (Another WW2 squadron coming to check out the WW1 stuff, I think!) and the boys found themselves facing off against formations of up to fifteen huns throughout the night!! Some seriously cool sights on Baer's livestream from the event:

As Larner mentioned, pretty much all squadron vs squadron over enemy lines this week, and the size of formations was impressive. At one point 15 Germans in 3 flights facing off against 8-9 Spads in 2 flights.

Liking how tactics evolve this way and the engagements themselves generally retained a structure and didn't devolve into huge silly furballs.

S! all who flew

Looking forward to next week.
