The Thursday Night Fly-In

Recommended Posts

Highlight of the night:

Flying in a formation of 8 SPADs - a couple of our guys went down to bounce a pair of Albs and before we knew it the entire flight was mixed up with about 10 Germans on their side! D7Fs, Albs, Pfalzes, Triplanes....felt like the whole German air service showed up!

Against all odds we all managed to survive, but sadly two of our newer members have taken up a rather permanent residency in Hunland. I hear the view is nice if you lean close enough to the jail bars...

And, of course, after surviving one of the most intense and risky dogfights I've been in on this current V-Life, I managed to run my SPAD into the back of a stalling Alb - bye-bye streak!

'Round 2' saw 5 D.VII Fs come over to our side and take on a flight of 4 SPADs - I was taking off at the start of the engagement but managed to get involved right towards the end.

All in all a great night, looking forwards to next week's one.

It was only a matter of time before we had a big dust up with JG1.

With a solid 8 plane formation including a couple of new guys Giroux and Bridgeman, we went looking for trouble, and found it!

Started off as a routine 3v1 with a D7, but 2 Albs quickly turned up, then a Pfalz, a D7, a Triplane, then more D7s!

Great stuff that really got the heart rate up.

Later as Larner mentioned, we had a few more run ins - in his case literally - and sadly we lost our top ace who had an amazing vlife going. C'est la guerre.

Thanks to everyone who came out to fly. Looking forward to next week.

Really cool fight with JG1 et. al. with close to 20 planes in a massive fight at one point.

Was cool to see the track record and watch more and more enemy planes enter the fight, then everyone just disengages at the same time.

Does anyone think there would be enough interest in including Wargrounds in the the Thurs rotation or setting another night aside for it in order to get some time with the older plane sets while the FC bugs get ironed out.

This Thursday will be on Jasta 5 Flugpark server.

Should be real interesting to see the new balloon dynamics and AA in action. I can imagine those balloons becoming more valuable, so protection of friendly and destruction of enemy could become a thing.

All welcome as usual. Our livestream should be up by 8:30 Eastern https://www.youtube.com/user/PaulLMF

I really don't know anymore. Originally i thought  it would work but seems there's a real momentum now with FC and a fair number of players who are FC only. Hopefully with the WW1 assets now available we can get richer missions in FC, though I'm personally disappointed there isn't proper photo and arty recon.

I like the idea of using RoF for earlier planesets, but with Wargrounds rotation you couldn't guarantee them anyway. In terms of another night, Monday might be an option. Its our 3rd Pursuit Group training night and i believe JG1 could also be training that evening so it might be possible to divert some of those sessions to RoF late 1916 or 1917 or head there after training.

You wanna run a poll or start a thread about it?

Reqardless of the planesets you will still have more missions and certainly more 2 seater options. Let's chat tomorrow and see what JG1 and J30 think.

You may be disappointed  Baer. The balloons nor the AA seem to be working properly. You can fly over the entire map, deep into enemy territory and at varying alts and not see a single flak burst. Matthias has discussed it in this post.

The 'loons appear to be bugged as well. They will not flare and are very easy to take out. Also have seen some "wonky" behavior. I saw one get shot down by another player, and it actually went UP as it was burning until it disappeared. I myself attacked 2, first one was uneventful and burned beautifully. 😀 The second one was quite different. When I attacked it clearly exploded in front of me, as I pulled up and turned to watch it go down I was amazed too see it good as new being winched down. I made another quick pass and it exploded again this time spiraling down as the observers jumped out. After the mission, I checked the parser to find that the second balloon never counted in the stats. No record of my firing at it at all. Very odd.

So AAA fired at me finally in my F2B as I crossed the lines tonight, but I was under 3000' and it only fired for a short time when I was extremely close. Not at all what FLAK was like. The MGs seemed to work fine.

I never saw flares from the one Boche Balloon near the river, nor did I see flares from airfields when I passed over or from our own when the map indicated we were under attack.

Yes, it looks like WW1 AA and Balloon features are bugged. Hopefully devs will get them sorted quickly.

We saw AA working ok below 1000m inside our lines, but not much over the mud and nothing high. Balloons went up and down but no flares.

Still it was fun today and our new US 3rd Pursuit Group got off to a good start in our new planes fresh from Mr Larner's paint shop.

We had a bunch of fights against low CL2s with escorting Pfalz or D7s. Tough combinations to attack especially when they coordinate well and CL2 AI gunners are exceptionally dangerous.

Also had a classic scrap with a pair of Alb DVas that we literally ran into in the clouds. A couple of Dr1s paid the price for shooting up US93rd_Hobbs and a red Albatros kept finding himself in front of a Spad's vickers!

Looking forward to next week!

Greetings Gents!

This Thursday we'll be flying on the FC JG1 Server.

Good fun as usual this week, though the stress levels went through the roof at one point.

Thought it was all over when 3 D7fs dived in from high as we hit a couple of CL2s on the deck.

They ganged up on me and the Spad took hits from all 3 but fortunately dodged my way back to Larner and Talbot who rushed in and dealt to them - at no little risk to themselves it should be said.

It was great to see all the new paint for the 103rd, 93rd and 213th. Plus we had Doolittle back and new recruit Bridgman, who is going to be very dangerous!

We did some high-ish patrols mid-mud and did get into a long high drag with some of the WW guys, but as usual most of the action was lower down. This seems to be a function of the 2-seaters we have in the game. The CL2 can't climb and the Bristol has its hopeless bombsight, so can't bomb.

Am already missing the Gothas, the high recons and patrols of Pfalz D12s in Rise of Flight. FC is great but the experience is pretty one dimensional if altitude is taken away.

Anyway, here's our stream replay. Timestamps in the description.

Thursday Fly-in will be on J5 Flugpark this week.

With it being Thanksgiving in the States we may see less pilots, but this has happened before and still ended up with a good crowd. Maybe bouncing Huns is a good way to work off all that food or escape the family 😁

Depending on numbers we may experiment with some more 'aggressive' squadron tactics that we've been wanting to try for a while. So come along when you get the chance.

Jasta5 also offering their Discord channels for comms.  Flugpark Discord: https://discord.gg/h8MRmyN

There is a Flugpark Discord channel link on the Info tab of the parser listed above for those of you wanting to fly on comms.   The "mutes" can congregate on a channel together and mute all the other pilots who disdain speaking or hearing anyone else but themselves.

Low on numbers tonight of course, but still got the heart rate up a couple of times.

3rd PG only had 3 or 4 flying, but it was great to get out with new guy US103_Cauffmann for the first time. Also brilliant to see JG1s Hotlead, Luftritter and Razwald able to fly, and along with SeaWolf's Dr1 and Hangmans D7f, it meant there was always organised, high threats throughout the night. In fact i never saw a CL2 or a low enemy once, everything was high or very high.

We were on comms with the 71st guys who were running Recon and Ground Attack so our focus was trying to keep fighters away from them. First patrol at 5k got the jump on a D7f over the mud, but then were nearly jumped ourselves as JG1 dove in. Later at 4500m+ we tried to get a D7f to come down, flaring and everything, but he seemed happy with the view up at 6k. So yeah, just setting the record straight, we weren't down low complaining about high flyers. 😉

Meanwhile the recons got their job done.

A Bristol in trouble over enemy lines saw Parsons and i dive in on 4 or 5 D7s and an Alb among the clouds, but they were aware and we quickly got stuck co-alt and had to exit. We had one more run in with 3 high D7fs but again had to withdraw.

So not the greatest session action-wise but it was good to finally see plenty of enemy at altitude.

Sounds good.

Will try wake earlier and stream some of the Euro SE5a action!

With 9 hours covered by the 2 windows there's interesting potential for long maps like the old Syndicate Dawn - Dusk series.

UPDATE:

J5 Flugpark has been having some technical issues - we are hoping that they'll all be cleared up in time for tonight! If not, we'll try to switch to JG1's FC server if it's up and running.

Why not Wargrounds....you get better Spads there.

We will get it running, but it may take a bit more than a bit of magic....probably not by the earlier EU start time, but hopefully by the regular NA start time.   Unfortunately all our server team is NA based.

So as posted above, look for the JG1 server if Flugpark not on the list.

At the moment, with J5 Flugpark down and no alternative, we're calling the GMT session a bust and hoping that we can make the second window happen.

Perhaps, if everyone's on board, we can rearrange the GMT session for Friday Night, server issues dependent!

I'm up to it. I might be slammed though (things are picking up again), but there is always people around on Fridays. Let us know!

Unfortunately C1 pushed an update hotfix that has caused a serious bug.  The J5 server is up with the old Kuban Flugpark mission running

I can't offer more details because I'm still troubleshooting and because I'm liable to say some very unkind things to the game devs... suffice to say that every one of the six missions in our current roation was rendered unrunnable.  It has already taken 3 people and approximately 16+ total hours of work to realize it was a map issue as opposed to a server issue.

Once I have more facts and find the true source of the issue, I will report back further...

UPDATE 3

Please give it a try and see if you can get in like this...  and let me know.

Sorry this borked up the Thursday Night fly-in....

UPDATE 4

I just took a baseball bat to the Server's BOS Install because I don't know what else to do.  We'll see if it learns to behave,

Yeah, noticed a recent update sniped about half of my recorded track files...including all the ones I was going to make some videos out of. Great stuff! 😑

Thanks for your continued efforts, Matthias

Looks like the latest hotfix (yesterday?) fixed the bug I reported when planes were disappearing about 2.5/3km in a collision course. Because the update 4.002 had made it worse, when planes weren't visible at all in a collision course. Now it looks fixed. I can see planes from about 5km away until they bounce. I have to check more thoroughly, but it is better than when the first visibility update came out (the expert and alt vis).
