The Thursday Night Fly-In

Recommended Posts

I enjoyed normal visibility a lot more than last week's alternate vis.  On alternate vis, you could immediately see everyone which seemed to translate to "meet me in the middle of the map dog fight server".  Normal vis was much more natural feeling.  I'm ultrawide 1440p, if that matters. I think it works better for the WW1 planes since they are much slower, you've got a lot more time to react once you spot some contacts.  Versus the WW2 planes, you've got much less time if you're in a head to head situation.

Outside of that, I had fun!  Not my best night by any means.  My brain just wasn't in flying mode I guess - I over sped my engine twice, like an idiot.  Encountered limited engagements for the 2 hours I was on.  I should have jumped in a 2-seater but by the timei was thinking about it, the dog wouldn't tolerate the lack of attention any longer!

Looking forward to next week.

One last thing - I think it might be beneficial to have a Thursday Night Fly-In Community TS/Discord/Steam Voice.  I understand there are established groups using their own stuff but if we had a default for everyone, it would make things a lot easier for all the groupless people. :)

Hang.

Just hang around the river. That's where most the fighting congregates.

Their TARDIS must have been set for the wrong period in history.

Maybe it would be beneficial to convert to a shorter range dogfight map then, in the short term?  If all anyone is going to do is hang out at the river, there's not much of a point to a wide ranging mission map.

No thanks. You won't find EVERYONE there. There are still a bunch of folks out doing missions-which is the overall goal of the map.

Now we just need to post the actual links to discord and TS servers so people can link up and coordinate.

Might get larner to edit the original post.

Great attendance tonight with a lot of action i look forward to flying with you gents again next Thursday and maybe see you on Sunday as well20191018031300_1.jpg.55b40cd79e1f07c00a2405fff403e99d.jpg

Regarding comms while flying on the server... note that teamspeak address on the bottom left of the grey box above (jasta5teamspeak3.com).  .... its probably the logical place to go if your on the server since others have been going there when flying on the Flugpark (feel free to use it for other servers of course too).  This coms server also serves as the Blue Team coms channel for JG1 Flanders in Flames as well, so many regular flyers already know this place.  Feel free to use if it is useful.

PS:  Its also a good place to "hang" out waiting for other pilots if you are one of the "lonely people"...

PSS

Here is the server activity for yesterday afternoon.  All start times are GMT/UTC.

Awesome turnout last night, thanks to all who came along! I didn't stay for the full thing but I did manage to get into some great scraps, including the big D.VII F / Spad XIII clash that Baer mentioned. Hope to see you all again next week!

Salute all :salute:

Reminder that this Thursday Night fly-in will be on JG1's server.

Current plan is rotating weekly between JG1 and J5 to support the Server operators and help them experiment with different mission approaches. If other mission-based servers open up and look appropriate we may want to try them also. It's still very early days for FC MP so we ask for your support to get as many pilots flying as possible.

Last Thursday was excellent and FC does seem to be generating more MP interest now. So come along and join the fun, all welcome.

Teaming up on TS is highly recommended and i think there are addresses listed earlier in this thread.

If you can't fly but want to watch for a while, the US103rd should have a livestream going by 8:30pm-8:45pm Eastern here https://www.youtube.com/user/PaulLMF

Thanks to all who came out! Saw some very impressive dogfights, and ran into trouble more than once against the Bosche! 42 pilots was the highest number I saw, and teams were well-balanced throughout the night. Fantastic to see! Let's try and make it 52 pilots next week ;)

Great to see so many pilots out again, over 40 for most of that 2nd map and lots of action high and low. Again many new names too. Very positive.

We were a bit late to the party for the South Patrol map. Larner raced ahead and reckoned he shot a DVII down but none of us saw it so it didn't happen

North patrol map started with a DVII that was just hanging out at 2500m on the edge of our lines. We figured he had to be a high cover or escort but couldn't see his charges so Hunter and Larner shot him down.

That seemed to trigger a lot of action. Diving on a couple of DVIIs chasing a friendly across the mud, we got one and chased the other off, and suddenly found the whole Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte coming across the mud! High cover wasn't gonna save us from that, so a we beat a hasty withdrawal.

Unfortunately Larner developed Albatros-on-tail syndrome. Running to rescue i managed to put myself exactly inbetween them - really dumb! Still 2 or 3 drags later we had him, but i was lucky - definitely time to rearm/fuel and grab a cuppa. We get to the AF and guess what, our Mess is being bombed by a CL2! I spent the last of my ammo on his gunner and Larner spent the next 10min finishing him off while whining about a head wound. Needs to toughen up that kid

Up again. Hunter & Hobbs quickly knocked down a Green tail Alb, however we'd spotted 3 or 4 high EA approaching. This started a long period of cat n mouse as both flights tried to climb to for positional advantage up to over 4400m. By this time we knew they were Dr1s and an Alb and we'd got them in a pincer. As we closed in 2 of them bravely dived for safety(!), leaving 1 to fight on. The first diver, the Alb we let go, but the second, a blood red Dr1 wasn't so lucky. The remaining Dr1 fought on and was still just alive when the map rolled.

We did have some issues with stutter in the first map and AV-on for both, but that aside it was excellent fun.

Looking forward to next week. Should be on Jasta5's Flugpark server.

Here's a replay of our livestream with timestamps to main action.

I think clouds kill the FPS. I may change my settings on clouds to low. Was getting 70-110 fps on the clear map.

S! All

Yes AV was on. Sorry.

It is a buried setting in the dedicated server  GUI. I normally use just the text file. Will work on that.  Update- saved file with sds GUI. It added AV false to text file.

Mission times were only 90 minutes. This was done for quick turnover of maps. Does time need to be increased to 2 hours?

I agree with cloud thingie.  We had 6 AI planes on both maps as well as multiple ground attacks in both maps. Only difference was clouds.  Very disturbing. Clouds are an important feature. Personally I like the clouds in RoF much better. Not sure why they reinvented the wheel.

Please remember that the present missions are merely tests. They are nothing like the environment that will be available with a full version of FC.   Balloons, tanks, trucks, boats, buildings, yes, yes, yes!

Totally agree. In ROF they are way more realistic and have some towers for us to go around.

I think a longer map is a little better, personally - it gives time for pilots to get into the swing of things, find the 'hot' action spots, etc etc. The clouds are a little worrying - 'reinventing the wheel' is a great way of putting it - although I hear tell of a 'cloud update' coming up(?).

Have high hopes the cloud optimisation update will help address the issue.

Clouds and weather were obviously a major factor in RL operations and FC is so much better with them.

Thanks @JG1_Butzzell for looking into the AV settings!

Quick reminder that this Thursday fly-in will be on the Jasta 5 Flugpark server.

Open to all as usual, though it's recommended to team up on TS/discord if you can. It's a dangerous place to fly alone.

Jasta 5 have kindly offered their Teamspeak for pilots to link up.

The address is here: jasta5.teamspeak3.com

Also, Thursday is Halloween, though I have no idea what affect that'll have on the flying. I expect Klug has an appropriate meme!

Generally starts around 8-8.30pm Eastern, with most dropping off after 11.

US103rd will have a livestream at the link below, but do post here if anyone else is streaming.

Where were you guys last night ?  Flew up and down  the mud at 3k for an hour seeing almost nothing. Shot and the 103rd were racking up kills like they were swatting flies. I saw only 2 encounters that were over by the time I got there.

I flew for about 20 minutes yesterday at the end of the Dusk map.  Then again for about the same time on whatever map came up next.  Nice maps; good graphics and colors.  Action was smooth.  No problems at all.  Anybody who has saying the Front still looks generic hasn't seen this one.  There was a lot going on down there.  I had a good time.  Thank you.

Q: If I'm flying my custom skin, I can see it in real time and also in the FR; can others also see custom skins at this server?  Do my colors show up on your FR?  Or does my plane just look generic because this is a "mods off" server?

Q: On the second map when I spawned in we were at the aerodrome and I was next to J30 Hangman in a D7 an J30 Kaiser in a Phalz.  After we got airborne, their planes (and mine) were identified only by the Jasta number.  And some of the Allied planes had Group numbers.  But some planes (both sides) simply state the type of aircraft.  Am I correct in surmising those are the bots and human pilots have Group or Jasta numbers?

For anyone to see your skin they have to download it. If they dont have it, to them your plane will look like the basic paint scheme for that machine. The only way to tell you apart from AI would be a streamer.

I think the server settings hiding the kill messages also hide the name tag when you playback the file. Not sure of this. Just a guess since I only see it on J5 for now.

Excellent fun again and a good turnout despite, or perhaps because of, Halloween 😁

We ran line patrols up and down the mud at a decent altitude above the clouds, but as Klug alludes to, most of the targets we found were either low or mid-alt on the entente side.

Butted heads with regular foes J30 in D7s and later a flight of JG1 Halberstadts. The latter we tracked from the enemy side of  the lines to our own, so no long range vis problems at all. We also ran into the SCG guys again in their bright red Albies, nearly getting ourselves into trouble. Must watch out for them in future!

At one stage a large, multi level fight occurred with 3rd flight engaged with Albs and Fokkers at around 2000m and below 1st and 2nd flights were engaged with 1, then 2, then 4 D7s down below at 1000m! It got a bit tense at one point when a b/w striped Fokker jumped on Parsons tail, but fortunately Talbot had an excellent high cover position and we could deal with it.

With just minutes to go in the mission Hunter, BlueCordBandit (ex US103_Hall) and Slim downed a CL2 and while watching it crash, Hunter and Blue failed to see each other turning in opposite directions. A sickening collision saw them both killed instantly and Hunter lost a hard-earned 25 victory life. We put a lot of effort into staying alive and Vlifes often last several months - a KIFA is a terrible way to lose it.

An unfortunate end to an otherwise great night but looking forward to next week!

Here's our stream replay with timestamps to action.

Quick reminder this week we're flying on FC JG1 server.

Kicks off by 8:30pm Eastern.

Note that the US changed their clocks back last weekend, so if you're in a timezone that can't be arsed with all that, it'll be an hour later than usual!

Everyone welcome.

EDIT: FC JG1 is up, so will be there as scheduled.

With 4.001 release, there could be a lot of interest tonight!

Sorry but no updates to mission at this time.

There are some bugs with the AAA, barges and balloons. Or I just do not understand how to use them properly.

Had a good time in the Thursday fly in. first time in a long time I got to fly it. Thanks Butzzel for hosting, but I think some of the targets weren't working, My wing man and I didn't put a dent in the front artillery or the other target close by.
