Agree.

Do the engines in the game stop smoking when you lean them out?

It is very important to manage your engine during flight - especially when you're able to manually set the mixture. As a Red pilot

I very often enter the combat area fast and clean (water- and oil radiators mostly closed), but most important I keep my mixture

as lean as possible to avoid those black smoke trails to disguise my approach into the combat zone and to avoid being detected

much to early - sometimes it works very well, on some occasions not...

Plus they should make a bit more power as long as you don't lean them out too much.

Just go for 65% mixture it set them on autorich. I would not call it engine management.

Keeping engines in perfect temperature should slso help both in fumes and effect, but I am not sure if that is noticeable in this sim

The black exhaust trails at high power and mixture settings are consistent with memoirs I have read from the war. Just run cruise settings and the trails go away. Though the Ai is not so good at managing this.
