MicroProse Returns with Warbirds 2020

Recommended Posts

Quote

Legendary gaming company Microprose has been revived and they’ll be developing and co-publishing iEntertainment Network Inc.’s

Warbirds 2020 this Fall according to a press release Microprose will be making use of the Unreal Engine 4 for Warbirds 2020 and they have a number of improvements for the game in the works. A high-tech mapping system will be used to get even more accurate depictions of real-world locations in the game. Of course, the devs will be paying special attention to the planes and their cockpits to ensure that they are as accurate to the originals as possible.

I cut my teeth playing  Warbirds & Dawn Of Aces for several years 20 years ago and I loved the gameplay (at least in the special events with hundreds of players) but it does not look like the graphics have improved much.   I loved the special events back then and nobody since has matched them but I doubt they can improve the graphics now while still having hundreds online together and it is impossible for me to go back now that I am used to the graphics of CLoD & DCS & BoX.

If they’re using Unreal 4 then the graphics will be top drawer.

It will be small map dakkadakka suitable for any console to run. I have no hope. But I like to be proven wrong.

I always associated Microprose with immersive singleplayer titles, not online crowd shooters.  It will be interesting to see how this one fares in the current market and if it can find a viable place for itself.

Wow is that ten year old footage they used to sell their 2020 title? Or am I missing something here...

Just who are they pitching this too? Core 2 quad hold outs?

Those Islands look like someone threw up seaweed... over a 3D graph of some data they found.....

Am I being too harsh? I can't tell.

Is Microsoft going to really leap ahead with their new sim? Can we stop them? Do we want too?

When the heck do we get new WW1 planes from the early period of the war? ( Nieuports etc )

What happened to "deadstick" now it seems to have turned into "deathgrip"...

Does it matter? In the big scheme of things. I mean heck they have a jet now...may as well pack up and go home.

Sorry. rambling there a tad.

What I really want is super HiFi ultra realistic WW1 simulator that's almost real. Just MP and yes you do have to read the

manual and do the training to take off. and the doped canvas actually sags and tightens as load changes....  wow.

Engine management is hyper real. Muck it up and you coke your head and foul your plugs or burn the ends off them.

ok and breath out.

Salute!

Planky.

Is this serious ? Or do I miss something...

Launch for PC/Mac computers is fall 2019 already. Wehn looking at the March 2019 video and its captions there is stil a lot to do:

" Have a look at some gameplay from Warbirds 2019 to get a feel for the sort of gameplay you’ll get to see in Warbirds 2020'

"The scenery looks a little simplistic, but the flying and combat seem rock solid at first glance."

Or the May 2019 screenshots:

Judging by the screenshots that could be a mobile phone game.

Is part of the plan: :)

Giving them benefit of the doubt, I've read on their forum that the plane is still a placeholder and the terrain is work in progress.

The screens are from May, so how much they can improve them in half a year? I don't know.

wow yes, heck, did they make that at the lego shipyard?

Tail wheel looks like it is on backwards... could cause serious ground loop issues.

I bet the drag from all those rivet heads impedes it's top speed too...

Looks like the game is shaping up well. : 0

There is something distinctly odd about the poor P-51s propeller too - the pitch is greater at the tips than the root. :(

Edit: Looking again, it's even worse than that. Two blades are clearly intended to rotate clockwise, while the other two should go anticlockwise...

One thing I would like to notice...... it is a MMO, meaning there need to be thousands of planes at once, MMO always had because of this worse graphics, because they send so much data to your PC and back.

'Thousands'?    Back when I played it, admittedly 20 years ago,  it technically handled a few hundred in a single map but it would only draw 32 at a time so if a furball got too big some of the planes became invisible. If they had only made the ones furthest from you invisible  then it might have been OK but it seemed random.  In the special events we had to deliberately split the bomber formations into smaller sections of about 12 and fly different routes so that when the enemy fighters found them Bombers+Escorts+Enemy was less than 32.      Has it advanced much since then?   Do you know with certainty how many aircraft the 2019 version currently allows in one piece of sky?

Last time I played it was 15 years ago, there were around 300 people on the server, the biggest 'fight' I was in had like 80 planes and they were all visible, i think they solved the 'visibility' problem and if there would be 200 planes around you, you would see them.

Well, even if stated as WIP, the plane looks like some diecast models some lazy kids can buy in 1/72 and 1/48 scale - not nice at all.

And btw. here are some other thoughts about the whole thing:

- Do these people (developers) have professional pride? I mean, why do they make such games? Only for some quick bucks?

- Do these people have any motivation (except for the money) to create a product that excels and put another milestone in combat flight simulation?

MicroProse was one of the most renowned studios that provided us some very good and at the time, very innovative products. I think, they influenced a lot

of us (older generation), that are now here on this forum to celebrate and share the passion that once was seeded by MicroProse.

So, if they don't excel with their new product, they will ruin the reputation of MicroProse again, like they did already back then with Hasbro, a cooperation

which led to a disaster.

As Bill alluded to and Sharpe said, “what’s in name?”

The Microprose that we all knew is long dead.

Also to be fair the botched Falcon 4.0 epically even back then.

To have the talent to create complex 3D models for a flight sim is beyond my understanding. To take a well known subject like the P-51 and butcher it like that, defies belief.
