Developer Diary 223 - Discussion

Recommended Posts

I'm looking forward to reading the first impressions of the 262 from the user base.  I will be flying it as soon as it's released, but I didn't fly it much in the old 1946, and that is the only other example of it appearing in a "modern" simulation I am aware of.  I'm betting some of you know this plane very well, and with all the work that 1c has put into this bird I am sure there will be things more experienced users will notice before I do.  I expect a challenging time flying her.  Oh baby!  This should be a treat!

Have a very important question: will you have to combat infantry in the future, even in "tank crew"? Without infantry much was lacking in the autheticity !!!!!

Hi, maybe that coul be interesting for you:

Quote

There’s been a lot of talk in the community about infantry interactions with tanks. Are there any plans to incorporate infantry (or say more types of fixed gunner positions with recoilless rifles or other anti-tank weapons) as part of this release or perhaps something for the future?

Jason: “I want infantry for TC at some point, I just don’t have the resources to get it done before final build. We have some ideas and hope to do it, but it’s kind of contingent on the success of Tank Crew: Clash at Prokhorovka itself. There is a lot more I want to do in this department, but we have to get the tanks themselves right first.”

Of course, this feature is linked to another - the possibility of field repair. It is also being worked on and most of it will be usable for aircraft as well. The crew will be able to repair the tank systems in the field as long as the tank is not completely destroyed. In addition, the mission designer can add special repair and ambulance tracks that accelerate this process both to single and multiplayer missions. Later, during Summer, we plan to add refueling and ammo trucks to replenish the fuel, oil, water and ammo reserves

This is where this simulator shines: new gameplay and features.

This is so scarce in a simulator and that is what I am looking for mostly.

Fantastic Job!

I’m quite curious as to why the next update will be called 3.101, and not 3.013?

See below. Other than that, can’t wait for a flyable 262😀

We don’t like the number 13 and this update is big enough to advance the version number a bit.

Great news! TC is shaping up nicely, the new functionality sounds very promising and that T34 looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Me262 is going to be a new type of beast, looking forward to learning it! I just got Vol 2+3 of Richard Smith's Me262 books (Vol1 and 4 are crazy expensive). Can learn more about the plane and maybe build some interesting missions.

Full news - here is a full text and visual materials

".... However, sharp throttle changes still can cause an engine fire ...."

This never happened. There is no single recorded incident where this happened. All German sources speak of Flammabriss, and often the consequent loss of the aircraft.

Flammabriss means flameout - that means that the engine's flames choke off. It means there is a lack of fire, there is no explosion, no open fire afterwards, just a giant dead strongly dragging engine. The Me-262 pilot will still have to bail out in most cases, the airplane would not be landable like this.

Please, this time on the Me-262 in a Simulator: Do it right.

And for anyone reading this, yet not even able to read German to properly study the actual sources (and not the translations this is based on), I know this is controversial. But it is true. Please consider that.

Definitely an interesting dev diary update to say the least. Looking forward to what the future reveals for iL-2.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the details on the 262 and the various planned modifications. I also enjoyed reading the detail of various quirks of the 262 and such issues will be present in the game as well. Such as self spontaneous combustion of the engines due to poor throttle management or the imbalance of the aircraft if too much or too little is chosen in the loadout.

Looking forward to the further improvement of the tank damage model as well. Hopefully the adjustments will address the concerns shown in the forums. It looks like either a complete overhaul of the system or a complete refinement of the system. Either way, it will be a welcome improvement.

Now for the biggest news, SELF REPAIR of both aircraft and tanks. I'm very pleased that the devs listened to the detailed suggestions in the forums about a self repair option in the field or at an airfield with use of support trucks. It will be a welcomed feature and the use of the trucks will also be a big step in improving the overall experience.
(I'm also glad the devs chose not to listen to the endless forum bickering on why such concepts are a waste of the devs time from select vocal individuals...)

Great news overall and Good work iL-2 team!

There was no self spontaneous combustion. It's false. What happened is called Flammabriss.

It means the engine chokes out. It's dead, but there is no flame.

Flammabriss != engine fire. These are different cases, don't confuse them. We simulate both.
We have many mentions in sources about increasing exhaust temperature, burning and destruction of turbine blades, moving the fire into the nozzle... It depends on engine modification and how a pilot handles a throttle.

Thanks for responding. It would be very interesting to see these sources - out of real interest. I am not trying to nitpick, or bait you. I am honestly a great fan of your simulator IL-2, and of the Me-262. I only know of engine fires that happened by damage by shot, and by kinetic accidents during take-off. Most notably the Steinoff case in which he ripped his gear on a bombed runway and slipped over the ground on his engine, and about Vogelschlag (bird hit).

I hate to burst your bubble, but this isn't some grand and new concept that you supposedly think you brought to their attention in the last couple of weeks. Refuel / repair / rearm has been a discussion as old as this forum, and things like this are planned by the development team far in advance of the development update published today.

Not to mention, things like refueling / rearming trucks for combat vehicles are a gaming concept you can find going back years upon years ago to titles like Arma2.

This will make the battlefield more lively and you can conserve your equipment in trade for a downtime. I think it fits perfectly, and is a good thing.

Overall I am very happy and pleased with the patch news. Really looking forward to it. Except for the little flame there that bugs me ;)

Will you be able to restart the engine in cases of a flameout? I know some skilled enough pilots could if givenlong enough

What a content-full dev diary! Fantastic start to the weekend!

I admit that I'm a little surprised - I have never seen any actual sources for engine fires and have always assumed it was a translation error that got turned into myth, as is common with many events and vehicles of WWII. If you have any reliable, esp original, sources for this as I assume you must have had, I too would be very interested in seeing them!

Great work as usual, have a nice weekend!

It is truly a shame, that it requires the devs to create an official update for a concept to finally become an "acceptable" good idea by "some" in perpetual denial of new suggestions. This stands even more true after so many years of such individuals saying it would be a waste of the dev's time to even bother with forum suggestions. If only there was not so much negativity in the forums by select vocal individuals. I'm glad you also agree with me Luke, as this will be a positive and long awaited welcome change for iL-2! Thankfully the devs see past such frivolous bickering in the threads and continue to build a fantastic gameplay experience and gameplay based on player feedback. ^_^

Good going with the jumo engines. It has been discussed to death and, imho, the right choice was made. I am aware that implementing engine reliability does not have many fans around here, but a 262 impervious to horsing-around would be too much.

Fire would have been a real danger, on the ground with little to no air speeds and primitive fuel meter controls.  If it happened in the air, than it's pretty much the only engine with such a record.  Find spontaneous fire hard to swallow with ram air through the spooling turbines in flight just from throttle.  Now flame out and turbine overheats with a resulting explosion after sufficient abuse with a resulting fire, very believable.

Would be great if we could fill the different fuel tanks individually in the Me262. All we needed then was a key to toggle the tank selector. A CG indicator in the loadout screen would be nice as well.

Excellent work, the tank detail is stunning. I just hope that environmental detail will increase in a comparative way. It will look silly if these immaculately detailed tanks are riding around in low poly surroundings. I know everyone here is a fetishist for the machines, but rich and detailed surroundings are also important to bring the experience to life. Stalking other tanks, you will be looking at grass trees and buildings most of the time anyway.
