P-40E with Klimov M-105P engine

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Would it be posible to add as modification russian engine in P-40E, i see that number of them were modified to have M-105P engine. With the way engine works in game having vvs engine in american airplane would be game changer and make this airplane more usefule for masses.

Because there were no spare Allison engines, and the fighters were in great demand, the regiment commander Major A. A. Matveyev, suggested that Soviet-manufactured engines M-105P and M-105R be installed in the P-40Es. More than 40 fighters were duly modified at the 1st Aviation Repair Base of 13th Air Army (at the same time several single-seaters were converted into two-seaters. Naturally, the installation of a less powerful engine resulted in a diminution of the fighter's performance. The maximum speed of a P-40E with the M-105P engine and VISh-61P propeller was reduced by 12 kmh (from 477 to 465 kmh). Therefore the modified fighters were quickly transferred to another regiment (196th IAP).

Would be better to get the Yak and LaGG with the 105P engine first..

But I have no objection to the principle, however I doubt many people would be enthusiastic for a low performance P-40 at its historic time period.

Any work/update on P-40 would be better spent on later models than the E, which were on EF in greater numbers

Cheers, Dakpilot

I think the minor loss in performance would be offset by the presumably simplified engine management.

Not really... the M-105P offers 1050HP of power, almost the same as the V-1710 does in continuous... so you just would be limited to continuous performance in the P-40 which isn't good.

A later variant of the P-40 like a K or M/N would be much better.

They add it first to P-40, then they can easy add it to early Lagg-3 and yak-1 and we all of sudden have more airplanes for BoM missions :) win win

All of the M-105 P-40s were up in the Leningrad area, so it's not exactly relevant to BoS right now.

It's more work than you are claiming it is.

if they ere only used there then they would not fit for game, ah to bad it would be interesting to see what the effect would be having that option

Why don't we get a IL-2 with an Allison in it while we're at it? :)

The „plane of no return“ then.

Here you go:

IL2

It flies actually. They omitted the timer.

P-40s with Klimov engines were very much a real thing.

It would be interesting modification to be sure. Howerer this modification wasnt much succesfull due to lower HP of VK105P. It only worsened already poor perfomance of P-40s. Units that used this suffered terrible losses. But it would look interestingly to be sure: 18-1.jpg

Kindof like a 109 with a Merlin in it?
