Thanks for the US geography lesson Jason. If I followed correctly your little adventure looked like:

I did a little read up on Flagstaff - seems like a really nice area; awesome back country and scenery. And Arizona is, FFS ,10% bigger than the entirety of New Zealand. It's such a darn big country you have there!

Looking forward to some reports and vids from the event, including the motion simulator in action and people's flying reactions.  Good luck.

Equivalent to driving across Australia East to West which i've done many times none stop the worst part driving west headlong into the setting sun and emeu's ,red roo's,cattle and camels 😎😢 😲 you ?

Deer are the big threat in most of the places I have lived (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest US). Even the small ones are just a solid ball of meat and do a lot of damage when you hit them 🤕

Where I am now on the coast I watch out for the turtles 🤣 Can't hurt the car but I'd feel awful if I crunched one.

Guys,

A long hard day that started off bad, but got better at the end. Our cool VR-Motion rig had unexpected problems even after everything was wired tight and working correctly at end of setup the night before. So, we had to use an older build for motion and no VR most of the day. After the exhibit period ended, with the help of Requiem, we were able to get the VR back up and I solved the motion problem with a stupid simple file replacement. So, tomorrow we hope to wow more people with the motion and VR. and on top of all that, throughout the day my collection of VIRPIL sticks kept un-calibrating themselves causing another headache.

Most importantly, several community members stopped by and were super great to everyone at the booth and me which I appreciate greatly since I was irritated beyond comprehension.

So today was not ideal for pictures and videos. I hope tomorrow won't be such crazy day and we can give some more flavor to the event, which is actually pretty cool and fun.

Now I'm off to bed to get some sleep and do it again tomorrow.

Jason

Lots of fun at the Expo today, despite all the mechanical problems with VR and joysticks flaking out, etc.  Given my famly issues, a house purchase/move, etc. and related complications for the last year, I've been unable to fly for about a year, and it was really weird flying without VR, but I did manage to down a few Bf-110s and 109s in a Mig-3 when things died down a bit late in the day (so maybe it is a bit like riding a bicycle after all).  The motion platform was amazing to watch in action, and the crowds kept it busy pretty much all day.  Still a bit steep for my budget, but maybe one of these days.

Had a great time looking over SYN_Requiem's shoulder while he gave ShamrockOneFive a real-time turorial about flying the ME-262 - even better than watching his tutorial vids on Youtube :)

I was afraid we would get the energy bleed from IL2 '46. Despite all real testing showed it held speed in turns better than prop A/C. [edited]

Meetoo lol.

I mean, you already have a working build, why don't just release it in the middle of the week so that people who've shown their commitment (bought  the game) enjoy it first? Oh, it's not going to be worldwide premiere anymore? Well, showing it off in front of bunch of people most part of whom are seeing the game for the first time is more important, as I can see. I guess those folks deserve it better than the old fans..

What? Other players get to play the 262 before those that have paid for pre-order?

Is that what you are saying SCG_BOO?

Oh well, hopefully it will draw more players in, as hopefully they can watch it on youtube!!

The new build is not ready yet , on expo is beta build or something.

I think we can all wait for few days.

People moaning that someone else gets to fly the 262 before they do? Good grief. (Although I'm pretty sure AeroAce has his tongue firmly in his cheek ;)).

I can wait; I'm old enough to be used to having to wait instead of how the 'everything now' generation expects things. Plus I'm English and expect to have to queue for everything.

Cheers.

PS Good report Shamrock - the appetite is well and truly wetted!

Hi all,

Nice article Shamrock. To all complaining that someone else are using the 262...well people have been flying it for at least a month now!! Its a Beta build I am sure.

Also my mistake, I should have wait for Req or others members present there to post something of them flying it, wont happen again seen how people took it..lesson learned

To be honest I couldn't give a crap about the release of the 262 at the expo as the Tempest is the beast I crave.

However, I'm just really disappointed that we haven't seen a picture of the "booth" lady, or did i miss that!?

Yeah this build being used at the Expo is a previous beta build so what you see isn't the release candidate.

Trust me, you would all much rather be flying a release build than any beta build just for the sake of flying it. The law of primacy (first thing you learn creates the strongest impression) would cause issues because of how things change every build by virtue of the testing process.

Shamrock,

Just read your article and was wondering whether the Me262 with all of the issues that you mentioned, will just become a hangar Queen?

As a mainly MP player, I'm struggling to understand how it will be used effectively in the MP arena.

Are you able to describe a bombing mission, please?

Just  managed to read Shamrock's article. Thanks for that. I agree that the most useful online use of the Me 262 would be in its A-2a variant serving as an ultra-fast Jabo. Place some seriously well-defended targets far in the Allied rear (i.e. a strategically important bridge, a major supply dump, a petrol store etc) and tightly limit the 262 to just a few aircraft. I know people will abuse it but I guess all those "I want to be [Insert-historical-ace-here]-reborn" will do that once or twice, get frustrated and return to "easier" piston-engined fighters.

I think that as an interceptor of bomber formations will suit fine as it did in ww2.

We need more allied bombers, I guess.

Somebody suggested the Lancaster as a simple model of a heavy bomber ....

Is it feasible?

I suggested the use of Heavy bomber shaped drones to act as a mission objective, a bit like truck convoys,  that use the minimum amount of resources to achieve a credible outcome, if imperfect, like most ground based elements of the sim, they still help flesh out the bones of the sim.

If we could get player created cratering of runways, that damage unwary players, taking off or landing, then another operation for mission makers might be player controlled 262’s, armed with bombs but limited ammo for their cannon, so that 262’s aren’t otherwise limited, in number, but never the less are encouraged to act realistically by not having the resources to hang about and make multiple strafs rather than having to make one hit, possibly two, one for bombs and one for cannon, before themselves becoming vulnerable during the take off or landing phases of their flights.

Don't worry, CF!!

That guy was too short for the 262 cockpit. We can see his eyes were below the gunsight level and the instrument panel completely blocked his sight.

It might. I don’t think it will be massively popular. It’s a specialist aircraft and a few will do well with it while I think the go to in this set will be the Bf109s - as usual.

Bombing is like in any attack aircraft but... faster. That’ll take some practice too.

Agreed and I think those are just the sort of missions that we’ll see the 262 perform.

Given enough time I’m sure many things are feasible. I’d love to see a four engine heavy but it’ll probably be more work than several simpler types.

Many 262s were flown by units converting from Ju88 so bombing was a primary mission.

I’m back at the show again today. Any requests?

No, you are wrong. Schwalbe is damn capable fighter - but he is really different from prop planes, you will need some treaning with 262. I can not say more, you will see very soon.

P.S. In my personal opinion it is the most beautifull plane in Great Battles, with accurate flight model and many more. Not only in Me-262a1 version, but in Me-262a2 as well.

People moaning that someone else gets to fly the 262 before they do? Good grief.

Agree, I mean all they had to do was buy an airline ticket, drive to the airport at Oh-Dark Thirty to wait around at the terminal for a flight to arrive late, get on a plane packed with families of snot-nosed screaming children going to Disney World, risk having their luggage lost, land in the HOTTEST and muggiest state in the while country, get driven to their hotel by a sullen Uber driver who might have twist ties and duct tape in the glove compartment, sleep in a strange lumpy bed that may or may not contain bedbugs, have a delicious "Continental Breakfast" the next morning consisting of watery coffee, a bowl of generic corn flakes and a stale cinnamon bun with what are hopefully just raisins on top,  then go to the convention site to stand in another line to get their name badge, lanyard and free goodie bag filled with flight yoke propaganda so that they can have the privilege of spending the next several hours slowly walking among a packed crowd of what may be the most sweaty, obnoxious, stuck-up and nerdiest demographic in the world (no offense to anyone here I'm talking about those Prepar3D guys that get their nut flying nothing but tubeliners) so they can work their way, finally, to the only booth that matters in order to wait their turn to sit down and figure out, in just a couple or few minutes, how to fly a new plane using an unfamiliar control setup with a crowd of strangers watching and harrumphing as they too wait their turn and capture the grand moment on video so your flailing crash can be shared and liked by the YouTube community.

Later, there will be plenty of time to reflect on the experience while eating a tasteless plate of Chicken Alfredo in the company of the blue-haired retirees who also chose to take advantage of the Early Bird special at Olive Garden.  Then, after checking out and paying the equivalent cost of the BoBP pre-order in local taxes and other mystery hotel expenses alone which have been added to your room rate, and having to inform the gorgeous girl behind the check-out desk (who is easily the most attractive and charming female you'll see on the whole trip) that the toilet in your room is clogged, it's off to the airport again for the return flight filled with shrieking kids who are too exhausted to take a nap and the parents, who are equally worn out and just now starting to deal with the realization that they've just shelled out a few grand so their kids can worship a friggin' giant talking Mouse, don't have the energy or interest at this point to get 'em to behave... so the kicking on the back of the seat will continue for the entirety of the flight.

While we have to go through the ordeal of waiting a few days so we can get up from bed, walk to the computer desk  with a cup of coffee in one hand and a glass of bourbon in the other, and spend hours flying the thing in our underwear.  It is just NOT FAIR.

Sorry for a long post, but really now.  Jason stay strong and Godspeed on your return.
