Today's battles were an absolute blast. During the Lens Morning mission, most of the Entente on Discord was searching for a lone plane pinging the airfield, and finally got bored. We then headed out across the mud looking for a fight right before the server rolled, and found a big group of Central planes just north of Lens. There was a huge fight, with planes up, down, left, right. It was glorious!

After the server rolled to the Lens Noon mission, I hopped over to Central to try the two-seater missions. Gardimus took Recon A, and requested fighter cover while I took a dummy recon. I took too long setting up my plane, so I wasn't able to follow the recon as intended, but that was perfect since I got to see what happened next. The Central fighter cover engaged a flight led by Kotori, and from a distance I saw a swirling ball of planes circling around each other. I now understand why it's called a "fur-ball": it really looked like a sphere of warbirds dancing, but "feather-ball" is a bit of a tongue-twister.

There were a few more great fights on that mission. I recall taking out the northern bridge, then encountering a Bristol (69th_Rubberducky) defending the fuel depot and a tough fight. Kotori and company then jumped the poor Halby (J5_Ragnutz) who finished off the Fuel Depot after we ran out of bombs and left. We were caught while attacking the trenches and there was a great fight there. With the northern targets destroyed, all attention turned south to the recon and targets. There were some great fights there to distract the Entente while the recon was in progress. We were running out of machines to throw into the fight when the recon finished (J30_Von_Hammer) and the mission was won.

Kotori then hopped over to Central to join us for a few fights on the Lens Afternoon map. There were some amazing fights with 1PL and a few names I'm not very familiar with. Having now fought against 1PL, I am glad we were on the same side for Black September.

Kotori thought he was streaming the whole thing so we could share the video, but he forgot to press the start button. Pretty sure I got most of the best fights on tracks, and may try and capture something from them later this week. Probably not going to do the full editing that I did for Black September since I'm focused on making skins right now, but there's probably something worth sharing in there. I have been having more and more fun with this recently. I am still seeing the usual issues rear their ugly heads (Fokkers go invisible even to Central players, control cables still seem to be bullet magnets, and a few planes simply fall to pieces), but some of these flights and some of these missions make it all worthwhile. To those who put it all together, salute! To those who fight with me and against me on all sides, salute! Here's hoping for more in the future!

Continued really strong participation by a large number of players as well as a strong performance by Entente.   The Central HQ is meeting in Spa to discuss the need for increased emphasis on ground pounding two-seater Schlasta's needed to win missions.  They are pinning their hopes on better construction of the existing CLII and crossing fingers for access to a second two-seater to put into hard pressed service along the front.

Great flying today. We had a pretty good sized group on Discord, mostly around 6-8 in the channel. I remember Kotori and I, Oliver88, FatherTed, RubberDucky, and Gardimus, and I know there were more I'm forgetting. I spent a couple flights in the first mission escorting No. 20 Sqdn. I recall one good fight by the artillery. There were a few flights that I intended to fly escort in a Camel, but ended up climbing up to chase a D7F at altitude. Not a good plan, I know, although there were a few decent fights. We also wrapped it up at the end with a large strike against the fuel dump in the north, with maybe 5? Bristols and a few escorting fighters. In the ensuing fight, we destroyed the target, but most of us got shot down. My rudder and ailerons got shot out along with one half of my elevator and I got wounded. With almost no control over my machine, I drifted away to the east almost perfectly level. By pulling up with my remaining elevator and stalling, I was able to turn back west eventually and start heading for home, but the map ended before I could come close to the lines.

The second mission started off a bit snowy. Kotori and I took a pair of SPADs to escort Recon B with another four SE5's. No opposition sighted, just 8 planes flying together in the snow and mist (a Camel joined up with us over German lines). It wasn't parade-level formations, but a fun, relaxed group flying together. On the way back we found first a lone Pfalz, then a pair of D7's and a Dr1 joined in as the fight grew. One of the challenges with so many friendly planes sharing the sky is trying to get an attack in without running into anyone. I think this first fight didn't have any collisions, but we weren't so lucky later. With the Recon safely on it's way home, we hit up the trench target before retreating. I think everyone had some bullet holes, but we all made it back.

While I was landing and swapping out for a brand new SE5, a couple pilots went for the southern bridge target, and learned that you really need HURL bombs: the Coopers just don't pack the punch to finish the job quickly. With ordnance spent and the bridge still intact, we all agreed to meet up at the artillery, which can be strafed. With separate groups converging on the same target, several enemy planes were spotted. I've often read about a single massive dogfight stringing out into several different small fights, but this was the opposite. Each group that was engaged managed to drag the fight over the artillery into one massive brawl. Kotori and I managed to clear out the AA guns and the AI Halby before the fights converged. I ended up with a jammed rudder which reducing my accuracy, but I stayed in to help out until the artillery was destroyed underneath the fight. Kotori reported seeing the strangest thing: a D7 ripped it's wings off in a high-G turn after taking some wing damage.

In the next sortie, I ran into Pfalz, a Dr1, and a Halby attacking the tanks. I think about four of us engaged in a small yet ferocious dogfight. My rudder got shot out again and Kotori was downed, but we managed to fend off the attack with only one tank lost. Overall, a relatively short flight.

Next up was the big one. We loaded up on Bristols, both FIII's and FII's, and headed for the Fuel Depot target. I think there were five Bristols loaded with HURLs, and two SE5's as high escort. While we crossed at treetop height, the escorts drew the attention of a D7 so we could get through unnoticed. In combination with a Camel (not on comms) they managed to down the D7 and continue on to join us while we hit the target. A few bursts of machine gun fire suppressed the AA gun, then someone blew it up. We then took turns making passes on the tank farm. Lesson learned: put the bombs directly on the tanks, don't try to blow up two by putting the bomb in between. With that problem handled and an over-abundance of ordnance left over, we turned our attention on the airfield. Normally, I don't consider airfields to be a target, but some of our guys had been bombed earlier in the day and we were so close that we had to go for it. When we arrived, a D7 had just taken off was didn't see us approach from the north. While most of us unloaded on the hangars and barracks, Kotori chased down the D7 and drew his attention with a few tracers. Now facing off against an angry Fokker and with the airfield pretty well leveled, Kotori decided to jettison his bombs  for the coming fight. The rest of us watched in surprise and disbelief as the poor D7 flew directly over the bombs and was blown to kingdom come. I swear we all were giggling like schoolgirls for a solid minute after that one. On the way back we encountered more opposition in the form of a Halberstadt. I got some great shots into him, but my gunner flamed him as I overshot him. Right as we were about to cross the lines for safety, some more Central planes showed up to exact revenge. I recall a Dr1, DVa, and a D7 chasing us, so we turned around to offer a final fight. There were some tight maneuvers with the Alby, who got some good hits on me. I think he was drawn off to another target, and I managed to get in behind him for a pilot kill while he was distracted. Unfortunately, I nearly fell victim to target-fixation as well when the D7 appeared behind me and shot out my elevator completely. Fortunately it was only a slight up-elevator, so I could control the machine by rolling to keep the nose down until the fight was over. I then leveled off by reducing throttle to about 70-75%, controlling my pitch with throttle (the Bristol has elevator trim, but full down wasn't enough for me). Once more I limped back to Mont St Eloi, but this time barely under control. I think I bounced on the landing and broke my prop, but the rest of the machine was intact and the pilot was healthy.

At this point, most people signed off for the night. With only three of us remaining, Gardimus grabbed Recon A while Kotori and I hopped into a pair of SE5's to clear out the balloon and barge targets. It was mostly uneventful. We polished off the balloon and barge, then took on the AI Pfalz and Halby with only minor damage in return. Gardimus thought it would be funny to pull a prank, and called "Check 6, break break break" just as he zoomed in to join us for the return flight. With the adrenaline clear of my system, we put down safely and won the mission.

I recorded a video and some tracks of the second mission, as did Kotori, so I may try to put together a video about it (no guarantees, I also need to time to finish up skins for Kotori and I). As always, salute to those flying with and against me, and to those who make it all possible. I had a blast!

When my elevator gets jammed I shoot it off.

Must have been terrifying for the Germans when they saw all our Bristol's and Camels coming at them. Think we had 7 Bristol's and a camels.

Oooh, not a bad idea. Do you use the pistol, or the tail gun? Will it work on fighters, or is it peculiar to the Brisfit?

That may have been me in that DVII, and I was sure glad I still had the altitude to bail out when I suddenly found my wings gone!

In another fight half my DR1's rudder controls were shot off and I must have entertained a few folk as I struggled in a flat spiral to eventually crash towards the East side of No Man's Land by deliberately bringing my left wings into the ground, sliding on my fuselage for probably 100' before coming to a stop, somehow uninjured. :salute:

Pistol, machine gun has the tendency to take off the horizontal stabilizer on the side your shooting but you still fly fine with out it. Should work on fighters as well. It'll work on ailerons too.

@Charlo-VR  Holy crap, with that computer you could probably slap wings on it and it'll fly. Didn't even know OC anything to 5.1 GHz. What is it before over clocking?

It starts stock at 3.8 GHz and overclocked pretty nicely to 5.1 GHz (I think that's pretty common on the Intel 10700K). Today on Flugpark I averaged FPS in the upper 80s on my G2. Flugpark is the only MP server I've been in so far that allows my graphics settings I like to get up to 90 FPS. Maybe the heavy overcast makes that more likely over the scattered or medium clouds I usually experience in Combat Box and Finnish Virtual Pilots. Great flights today, took me back to my ROF days!

Yes, that is a D7 getting blown up, screenshot from Sunday. I posted it for Charlo-VR since he was there. I also have a screenshot from BS where my Camel got blowed up by a buddy bombing the blasted artillery...

Great fun indeed, some good fights high up and down low, flying for the Kaiser for a change. I got a harsh reminder of why I shouldn't be allowed to fly a Dr.I for other purposes than cross country sightseeing. I was fighting my plane more than the enemy...until a Camel deprived me of my wings and at last I was flying straight....down. Pfalz D.IIIa is much more suited to my flying abilities.

Hi there,

seasoned IL2 pilot but just got FC and this sounds interesting.

Anything i should now in advance? I much prefer having a clear duty and being part of a meaningful flight over just hopping in and doing "free hunt" alone. Is there some kind of organization happening before the flights?

No not really. Get to know the mission and join discord for further comunications.
