Northern part of Eastern front

Recommended Posts

Hi, is there any chance we will get maps of Finland/Leningrad area? We currently have southern and central parts of the Eastern front. The northern sector was somehow forgotten. We have complete set of Eastern front  planes from 1941 to early 1944 (only a few not made left) but the northern front is missing.

For example area between Petsamo bay and Murmansk would be good :salute:

Hopefully one day, but I think that after four Eastern Front titles, the developers will focus on other parts of the war.

Everything which expands the eastfront would get my money. Barbarossa to Moscow, Fall Blau, Charkov, Kursk, Bagration, Leningrad, Murmansk, Goetterdaemmerung Oder to Berlin, so many yet untouched areas/timeframes.

I would love to see a Leningrad map, but I think it might have a similar issue as Moscow does with the game engine - the city would really strain the engine. And unlike Battle of Moscow, to do Leningrad any kind of justice at all there would have to be fighting over the city itself. With Moscow you can kinda get away with the city being a backdrop, but Leningrad was completely besieged.

I would like to see something that covers 1944, with some planes - mostly Russian - to go with it.  Call it Bagration but provide some early 1944 support too.  Kuban takes us almost to the end of 43.  Some German planes are in place for 44 (Me109 G6 and FW190A8, the Ju88 and He111 are still viable).

I wonder how they will do the cities for the bodenplatte map, they have some rather large cities on the map, I'm hoping there wont be any trouble flying over them.

Leningrad would be pretty interesting, it's about the only thing I find interesting from the eastern front and is the only reason I'd want another expansion for the eastern front setting, unless they do a late war scenario when the Russians start pushing into Germany.

I hope the devs can use third parties to create some stand alone maps or in the long run allow for user created maps.

Maybe I am wrong but I remember the reason for Moscow not being modeled for overflight was due to time/manpower to get it up to acceptable standards, and the balance that Moscow itself did not feature much/if any (daytime) air combat - large amount of work which would be redundant for the historical representation of BoM.

It must also be remembered that at period of BoM development time and resources were very tight.

I recall one of the devs saying it was not an 'engine' problem per se, but it may be my faulty recollection?

Cheers, Dakpilot

Yes. To me this would do a lot to hold interest. Don't have to do a whole new release with new career, planeset etc for every map. Just more variety of terrain to fly over would be great.

It wouId be great, if the devs could create a larger, less detailed map of the whole battle of Kursk area alongside the small Prokhorovka sector map for Tank Crew, but I guess that's unlikely to happen.

Smolensk could be combined with Velikiye Luki map, so it would not be too much work i guess. And maybe even moscow to make one huge map if that's possible. But still Velikiye Luki + Smolensk would be cool.

I really want Leningrad expansion, it would allow you to spend there years and because of this create the longest campaign, from early to late war. Same goes for Charkov with 1-4 battles for it.

Later i would like to see 1944 and 1945, poland would be nice and then germany.

If that's the case that's good news. I would love to play a Battle of Leningrad, even as just a standalone map using existing aircraft types. I never could get it to run smoothly in Il-2 1946

Remember that the city of Moscow was outsourced to Yugra Media.

That studio also creates the Po-2 and refurbished the existing WWI planes for Flying Circus if I remember correctly.

In relation to maps you never know what is in the pipeline.

I would go with all of the above. My suggestions were premised on the wider time-frame of the areas given current a/c.

But sign me up for anything upon which his Jason-ness and team decides.

Nothing official so far, but there's this:

The plan for the New Finnish Front!

As 1C Gaming Studios announced the new Battle of Kuban sequel and the coming move to the Battle of Bodenplatte, Finnish IL-2 enthusiasts decided to gather a group of able individuals under the Virtual Pilots association to produce a Finnish front map for the IL-2 Sturmovik independently as a volunteer effort. The group consists of specialists who have been making maps/terrains for different simulators, are 3D-modelling professionals or 2D-artists and also makers of historical missions and military history enthusiasts.

If this will be high equality map, I wish 1C would make a deal with them, create career for it, maybe add some planes and sell as full expansion :P

Beautiful! That would be so cool! I hope they get that on its way.

If only the map would be 260x260 instead of 260x200 (extended southwards), it could include German operations in the area, too.

Would be great to see this project come to fruition with the high fidelity available for the current game.

Those maps "Kanttori" created for the old game were excellent so to have his team now bring that region to this modern series of Il-2 would be something worth paying the money for, bring on those epic flights.:drinks:

Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

I agree, the ratio of water to ground (with the water mostly between the ground areas, and with plenty of islands and lakes) would make for a really interesting map to fly in. Plus I'm from Finland, so all the more reason for me to be interested 😄 I've no idea how the project is going, however. All I know is what's stated on that webpage. Let's hope for the best.

About making the Karelia map, we haven't heard anything about the map making from the dev side for some time now. I wonder if they no longer are open to the idea of third party map making.

In my experience lack of response from the devs means they have their hands full with other stuff. It's often necessary to send a few reminder PMs. If that doesn't work, send Jason an Email.

If/when you resume this map building, could you look into extending the area further south? It could then cover the area of German operations, too, from Barbarossa in autumn of 1941, through the siege years of Leningrad and all the way to Battle of Narva until August 1944. For tank fans it would also give the area where Otto Carius earned his Knight's Cross and that is known from his book "Tigers in the mud".

What you are asking would be a crapload more work ;)

Is Gatchina (Krasnogvardeysk) on the map? This was the Luftwaffe airfield closest to Leningrad. Maybe this airfield could be added without too much work.

I don't know. Have to ask @LLv44_Kanttori :)

We need a third party or modders dedicated to solely produce new maps ... Top priority now that the plane set is getting very relevant. My wallet is ready ;)

Well since almost half of the bf 109 E to G2 skins and other planes are squadrons we dont fly in the South, they should honour the skin gods and build the northern map.

Zerstörer Ju 88C-6 would be also nice addition (although it served mostly on the southern and central part of front)

Only thing our Ju 88 misses is the nose armament.

Our map making team is working with the "Battle of Leningrad" map all the time. Anyway here is our first 100 km x 100km Kotka-Lavansaari map which is under work at first and just now. It is at the same time our "testing map" that we are learning the terrain making methods to this game.

kymi_lavansaari_nav.jpg

In beginnig of next year that Kotka-Lavansaari map above is contained to our main work which we had named as a "Battle of Leningrad" because it describes it very good. We have incereased the map much more to south and  east - We have noticed that it is much more better and versatile cropping even the map is growing to  huge dimesions to 400km x 350km. Thanks God there are about 30 % sea and big lakes... :)

Leningrad and Vyborg cities 3D-buildings are combleted all the time by our 3D-modellers while the other crew is building that smaller map. We also just got our national
Finnish Environment Institute to co-operate with us. Our professsional contact person there delivers us all the necessary data as elevations, water and ground cover data. it helps our huge job really much and now the map progression looks very good!

I guess  (and hope) that we can show the first screenshots from that small map very soon after Xmas... ;)

They have for a few years. The problem with user maps is that so far only one was completed. There have been three other maps that were started and remain unfinished. Even the Great Luke summer map seems to be dead for the time being.

Our mosly Finnish team is big (10 members) and we have any hustle or pressure with this Finnish-Russian maps. We are mostly adult 40-65 years old men who have very much professional experience  with the map tools (mostly Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and several 3D softwares) and we have also huge amount of knowledge and interest of Finnish-Russian war time history. Most of us are also "hard core" IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles players and we really want to create this big map to this game. It is at the same time also us nice history project, not only a gaming pleasure... ;)

I have personally made several maps to other games and I know the quantity of the work what it requires, but with this team I know we can do it. Most of all we Finns have so called "sisu" which means willpower or stamina. We don't give up very easily! :)
