Stupid question - AI not engaging ground targets?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am not really sure about this, but I have been playing the Sea Dragons campaign (epic stuff, even-though I suck at flying IL-2s), and I have the impression, that my wingmen don't drop bombs or attack ground target at all. First missions are sort of level bombing stuff against an airfield, I always look at the lead when he drops and drop like a second later and... I don't see them dropping. Not really sure anything is wrong, maybe I am just blind and dumb. Can anyone confirm?

I have seen this behavior in the Career Mode occasionally when flying bomber escort,  sometimes the bombers will fly to the target area and just circle and start returning to base.

Other times they drop bombs just fine.

Not really sure the rhyme or reason when they do or not, just a glitch I assume.

Are you the flight leader? If so,  you can give your wingman attack orders.

I have tried that, but I don't see much of an effect. It may well be that I just don't notice them doing proper stuff.

Usually the AI leader will instruct the squad to engage ground targets. With bombers I think the usually drop in one pass, with attack craft it seems they sometimes circle for quite a while before attacking sometimes.

When we do a soft column strike in fighters, they all seem to attack en masse at first and then break off and attack individually.

I have seen "this" AI behavior more than once when escorting bombers.

Example He 111 flight only flight leader drops the bombs and rest just fly in formation.

The same, when intercepting bombers, especially in PWCG, they fly to the target, turn around and RTB with bombs. You can only see them jettison their bombs, when seriously damaged.

I met this behavior again and again during the last few years, already in the old campaigns. Originally during the BOS days, I believed that the AI is generally unable to attack ground targets with anything but bombers. In my recent Fw190 Kuban ground attack campaign everything was fine until I became squadron commander. As flight leader my wingmen never attacked, just circled the battlefield as before, when flying in a wingman slot they did as they should.

This is obviously a campaign situation. I don't see this AI behavior in my Single Player missions. 😐

I can only repeat myself. Why are improvements/rewriting the Ai logic are not on the Top5 of the Dev. list? This ruins the SP experience for so many of us. Not to mention the campaign builders...

We have dozens of this topics. Nearly every week a new one. I put IL-2 aside for over a half year now because of those frustrating moments in every Single player mission/campaign.

Sorry, this is beyond my understanding

(Still stick to X-Plane 11/DCS ^^)

Has a SP flyer most of the time I have to agree with a lot of Semors post. I understand the need for revenue BOBP,FC and TC but I personally feel the SP side ( I don't do much MP) is maybe getting left behind? The AI at times is really poor. Don't get me wrong I've fallen in love with this series and I appreciate what the Devs and everyone else who continues to improve this sim do but I get really frustrated at times witnessing some of the issues that I see frequently with the A.i.

I'd personally wait an extra 6-12 mths or more if I had to for the release of BOBP and others ,if the time was spent On the Ai having some "Reworking" done.

This sim is a really good sim...with a bit of work I personally think it'd become a Great sim.

Too many balls in the air at once...

just flew an escort mission in PWCG. HE111's flew in circles till I was dizzy! Never dropped and 2 of my mates were killed protecting the idiots. A common and frustrating part of the AI.

We know that that 777 has no dedicated AI programmer.

What we don't know, however, is WHEN they are going to hire one or address this issue. I also have not played the sim for about 3 months due to the AI ruining my career experience.

Great AI never was easy to marked, it doesn't show on screenshots and in the first couple of hours flying, so it is not that relevant for generating sales. That being said, in the long run, a great AI keeps a fighting sim alive. I hope they'll manage to scratch some dev bucks together and push it on the level the sim and the career mode deserves an AI having.

AI for bombers is broken :( I often experience everyone dropping bomb on one  target, so you see 6+ 500kg bombs from stuka hitting one house or truck.. or they don't do anything at all. Sometimes only one or two drop bombs, you get mission success and they ignore all other targets and fly back with bombs.

It's career mode, just random missions.

Tho there is mission in single missions folder for stalingrad for ju87 to attack bridge and crossing troops.

I played it few days ago first time, only i attacked anything. I was giving them order to attack nearest ground targets and they just flew around and ignored everything. Went back to base.

This is why i dont like to Fly Bf 110 careers no more.

The AI kills himself in ground attack missions to over extended time in area. ( Bombs and few passes with guns is not enough )

Only way to "save" your flight is yourself do nearly suicidal attacks to assigned targets so  can destroy enough targets that my flight is happy and can go home.

Usually there is no assign escort flight to such missions either but thats not AI's fault.

The missions are just badly done.

Once i got 100 kills on iron man career and my flight was only full of "rookies" who dies usually on first flight.

I have started so many 110 careers and i have seen all the issues and right now to speak honestly its a mess.

Zip up these files (written over with each new mission) along with a description of the behavior that you witnessed.

I can suspect it and determine if it’s an AI issue or a mission logic issue.

Escort Mission Flight of Ju87 on the target one bomb dropped notice black smoke. Images 1&2

Images 3&4 Flight heading home with bombs not dropped.

Image 5 Leader only has dropped his bombs.

Can see this behavior almost every flight most likely always (no time to always look them)

Salutations,

I find this interesting. I created a dawn bombing Area Attack mission with a flight of two Bf 110 and a flight of three Ju 87. They each made separate bomb runs on Yantar airfield and on units in Yantar.  If they had bombs remaining they returned for a another run on any remaining active ground targets. I had them set up to bingo and RTB when out of bombs. Worked fine every time. It was not a high altitude attack. Maybe from 1,500m - 2,000m.

I will qualify it as a personal single player mission created while learning to use the mission editor. :salute:

I suspect the Career Mission Builder doesn't currently have that degree of detail mission assignments per flight. 🤨

I get very mixed results.  One mission a group of Stukas all dropped on a convoy of ships.  It was beautiful and very cool to watch them roll and dive one after the other.  Other times no drop.

Seems to be hit or miss.

I played two career missions one HS129, one ME110. I was part of flight and gave no order. All planes dropped their bombs, did 3-4 passes and headed back to base.

My impression it is more a mission editor rather than AI issue. The AI performs best when it has a fixed target pre-assigned in the mission file.
