Question on Soviet airplanes

Recommended Posts

On German fighter a/c the colour of the number designates the staffel. On Soviet a/c why does one see different coloured numbers (usually red or white)?

Not sure of the context: do you have some specific picture in mind, or just in general?

I think Soviet numbers were very much done unit by unit with no great uniformity of style.  But I would expect the same colour to be used for a whole squadron, usually, depending on what sort of paint was to hand.  You can find Soviet planes with black and yellow numbers too, but white on summer skins and red on winter skins probably gave the best contrast.

I'm a bit late, but check these links:

In English, mostly late war unit markings: http://wio.ru/simbols/sov-en.htm

In Russian, about early war markings: https://warspot.ru/6593-bukvy-i-tsifry-na-ishakah-i-migah

In Russian, unit markings: http://wio.ru/simbols/iap.htm

Great links Lucas, many thanks.👍

The 3rd link should be useful for skinners as well.
