Favorite Collector Plane and Why?

...but aren't they part of the "classics we know for years now"?

Anyway, MiG is the most beautiful ok. Radials are pretty low on the prettiness spectrum, and the Yak-1b looks like it needs to lose some weight around the waist.

No, I wouldn't see it that way - the first time I saw and enjoyed Russian aeroplane was in the original IL2-Sturmovik ca. 10 years ago. But a lot of them were modded

planes. To me these we are flying right now are genuine and from "first hand" - no "Frankenplanes" if you remember this common term for modded planes.

The boring classics - by no means bad nor uninteresting - are all the BFs, MEs, FWs, Mustangs, Spitfires, Hurries etc. we already know for decades... I like them too.

And you're right, the MIG3 is very nice.

For me it’s gotta be the Fw 190A3.

As much as I’m a fan of the La-5s, I just get so much more enjoyment out of the Würger.

Own everything but the Ju-52, and I have to say I've gotten the most fun out of the Spitfire and P-40E. The Spitfire is fun for scaring cocky 109 pilots who don't know how good its climb rate can be with the boost knob pulled, and the P-40 is just a big, heavy beast that rewards patient aggression like no other plane. That said, I haven't put that much time into the La-5FN or 109G-6 yet (though I do like using that Mk108...)

Least favourite is probably the C.202 so far, just can't seem to get on with it. Isn't as fast or easy to manage as a 109 and it has much worse armament, you rarely get a kill on the first bnz pass, and the awkward stall it has due to the odd wings makes trying to knife fight in it a bit hairy. The Fw-190A-3 is probably the least "value" if you have Kuban, as the A-5 is almost the same thing, but it's nice to be able to fly a focke on earlier war scenarios

I would say that if you are looking at getting the best Combat aircraft rather than just 'Most Fun' then it is the Yak-1b.   Technically it is only a bit better performing than the Yak-1 but the  rear view from that canopy is awesome.   If you have Kuban then you already have the Yak-7b which comes very close in performance but does not have the good canopy and overheats a lot easier.   The LA5-FN cannot turn quite as well as the Yaks but has an amazing roll rate & climbs a lot better and is faster overall.    The spit turns well and is very forgiving and the guns are lethal at convergence but it has limited ammo and is slower than most Axis fighters.

My vote goes to the future collector plane Me163.

To fly Me163 or no balls!

Even Space_ghost wants to dip balls into T-stoff:)

Just curious what people in the community think regarding the collector planes. It'll help inform my next collector plane purchase during the next sale.

Buy them all Gordo if you want to continue having the problem of deciding which collector plane to fly.

Aye, but for anyone who can't drop $200 in one go, it's a fair question to ask surely? I'm in the same position and fully intend to pick them up gradually along the way (and Bodenplatte order when the map becomes available), so I'm enjoying the recommendations in the thread. The Spitfire love is certainly moving it up my list...

I fly the p-40 and the Spitfire almost exclusively. And when that Spit 9 shows up in my airplane menu, I just might not fly anything else for quite a while. I don't have Kuban, though. I'd probably fly that A-20 a lot if I did.

I would REALLY never thought I would say this but... the P-40. I flown it many times since I got it (one or two weeks ago) but always with no enemies, just QMB to fly around (and ground pounding too). Man, I know I gonna get rekt on it if I even dare to battle a 109 or 190, but... its just too beautiful, fun and pleasant to fly, don't ask me why, it has a feeling that makes me love it. Really really never thought myself liking a murrican plane besides P47, big surprise for me there.

Followed closed by G6, because 109.

Idk why but before this gane the A3 was barely ever on my radar.

I love the Dora and I probably do best in it but the A3 is mt fav 190 by far now.  I love the radiators that look like gills.. All of it.  The a5 is cool too but doesnt hace the same.. Charm the A3 has for me

The Spit is outstanding.

The ammo is the only weakness. The best thing you can do for the spit and luft planes with the 30mms are learn exactly the lead you need for deflection shooting and binding wpns group 1.

When you do that you can get nasty...

For example the spit - enemy planes little further out? Just use the 50s. They still hurt.. Alot.  Closer in or better shots whole shebang.

Ammos not so tight on the Luft planes but the 30mm drops alot and is slower - get that lead right though and my god..

Id love the Spit sooo much more but theres a game issue that rlly hurts allied planes and its noticeable bad in a spit for me.  To wit - the engine often doesnt go to damaged or even better run rough for a monute or two then be damaged (please give us at least this!) But instead often in a heated dogfight im on combat power just too long - no sputtering, no warning just SNAP engine off.

My favorites are the 190 A3 and D9,

109 F4, G6, G14

Yak7B, La5FN

Looking fwd to and dreading what theyll do to my p38

Im sure the best allied fighter will prolly be the tempest performance wise and my favorite.

Least favs:

Laggs.  109 G2, F2.   P39..

The p47 is so terribly misrepresented I feel I wont comment but itd be my most hated otherwise.

It says a lot that in WoL or TaW i get at best 2 kills or so a day.  In Berloga I can do much better and I got my first ace in a flight sorties for MP last night.  Interestingly it happened 2x(!) In a dora and both times p47s were the majority of my kills.  One was 4 p47s 1 spit ix; the other 3 and 2.

Definitely the P-38....

If you are referring to planes we actually have already, I'll go with the Spitfire MkVb. It's been my favorite since it was released.

Fw 190A3 as a collector and 190s in general. Why? Because of performance, versatillity and unsurpassed firepower. Flown to its strengths it really is a killer (butcher bird). Can´t think of any other plane of that time period which even comes close.

Hs129... as it adds a lot to the experience, followed by the U-2 (which would be first if it wasn't for flying circus providing a similar low/slow experience). Then the Yak-1b and the Ju-52...

I agree with this not because your choices but because I really like that every collectors plane isnt some uber plane to help pwn in MP.

Having specialty planes and odd planes or less well performing planes really makes air to air combat more interesting..

Its always a joy to randomly encounter a Po2 (1x and I didnt even bother..)  Hs129s (see em a lot more. They like to blow up)

The one time I saw a ju52 I almost sh*t myself in excitement.  Because of this I wish there were more planes like C47s, Fw189s etc. Even AI only. Itd be cool if some servers had an option for some AI planes - imagine a stalingrad map where gaggles of Ju52s would flying across the map to Pitomnik.  Every trip adds x points. Red goes after the stream (ju52s could be playable.too but AI to fill numbers and only for simple tasks) while blue tries escort and perhaps airfield raids.

Or for BP adding C47s and having an Op Varsity type scenario.. Or just making ai B25s as a big formation so the all8rs can escort.  This would be great too because itd give our Me262s their true purpose.  Youd need people to fly them and people to fly prop jobs like IRL.  As it is now with the 262 its lacking its main prey - I liken it to having Il2s with no ground targets.  Ok maybe not that extreme. Il2 ajd the only targets are AAA :)

I largely agree - it adds a lot of richness to campaign missions to have varied enemies in varied roles.

The use of Me-262s against recon Spitfires and P-38s, as well as recon Mosquitos (if we ever get them) can certainly be modelled. However, the sim engine won't be able to handle the large heavy-bomber streams (at least day-bombers, the more diffuse formations of night bombing Lancasters could be handled by the engine - although we're unlikely to see them for unrelated reasons). That is also a reason why the point of modelling aircraft like the Me-163 is pretty low (compared to even the He-162... which saw less operational service but was used more at low altitudes favoured by the tactical airwar in the sim).

At this point Id be happy if they figured out ways to make A20s or B25s group up into 24 planes..

I enjoy a plane making me believe I am in it for real.

There are not many in each sim doing that. In this there are a great deal if them.

Lagg was the first. IL 2 and to some degree pe 2

LA 5 must be the first collective one. Then fw 190a3

Now po2 and ju 52 stick out.

And the HS 129. Well I love the P 40 and the Spits. After some getting used to, when I finally got the 109 G6. It really put a new favorite among the 109’s , well after the E7 that is.

I dont know if the fw A8 is a collector plane but I like that one. What a looker, well Dora is better but I sure do like the A8

My favorite is a tie between Hs129 and Bf109G-6.

The Hs129 because when I was 12 (Hard to believe that was 18 years ago now) I was given a box of old, but still new in box models from my grandfather. It had everything, Mustangs, Spitfires, Thunderbolts, Corsairs, you name it. But the one that jumped out at me just because of how different it was an old Hs129 kit made by Airfix. It was the first model I ever assembled, painted and weathered. (Picture of the exact box art included).

Bf109G-6 because when I got into buying 1:32 scale Corgi WWII models, all I was buying were Spitfire Mk Ia's, Hurricane Mk I's, P-51D Mustangs and Bf109G-6's.. My favorite WWII aircraft from the European theater. And since the P-51D isn't a collector's plane in the series, it would go to the 109G-6.

The Hs-129 is my favourite axis aircraft in the game too.

For the other side I'd have to go with the I-16.  Although I do sometimes like flying the Spitfire, when I want to break an engine or run out of ammunition in a hurry.

a bit offtopic, but still loosely related . . .

In one of Kermit Weeks Q&A's he was asked "What is your favourite bird to fly and why ?" he does have a few "collector" planes after all ;)

his reply was "which ever bird I am flying at the time" which I think was a really good answer. In Il2 i'm sure we all have planes we prefer to fly and therefore fly them more regularly, but speaking for myself, I'll quite happily take supplies online from a rear to forward airfield in a JU52 if they are needed, and still find it rewarding.

as time goes on, the more choices we will have, I think I will certainly enjoy jumping into something I have not flown for a long while.

I have the G6 because I love the F4 and K4 so much. I have the Hs129 because I loved ground striking  (and used only the Bf110 for that, it was my number 1 favorite) I have the Dora and the engine sound gives me goosebumps but I stink in it and visibility is bad thanks to the fat A-styles  (in car terms, no clue how they are called in plane-terms)

As a kid I had 4 planes I loved, the Catalina (I had a modelkit from the one Cousteau used) , the P38 , the Spitfire and tante Ju (I wanted that as a kit so much but I could not find one (in the 70's) . I builded WW2 models and maquettes back then. I was 14 or so, so it was one a budget, and that came down to sand and plaster. The biggest was 2x1m with a marklin modeltrain on it, about 200 (matchbox ? ) soldiers I hand painted, something like 10 tanks, a few crashed planes and a few hanging above it. A POW camp ( called Stalag 17 like in the movie) Most things had battle damage, I even had painted my trains in camo. No internet, no color tv so I had  no clue about the right colors etc. just a lot of imagination.

So that is why I bought the tante Ju for IL-2 but I have not used it much. I have 1 nice mission delivering goods at night but I can not figure out what I need to do because the radio tells me to use runway 23 (or other insane numbers) on airfields with something like 2 runways and if I then land on one of them nothing happens. Besides that I must change my controls setup every time I use it because I have binded the twistgrip of my joystick to the left and right brake. That works for all planes but tante ju. There I need to remove that binding and use the keyboard together with the joystick, throttle unit and keyboard at the same time, not very handy if you have only 2 hands. The graphics are good but not of the same high quality as most other planes. Is this a model that is made in the beginning of IL-2 ?

But I was talking in the past about the K4 etc. Things changed when I learned I loved turn fighting and was killed within 30 sec in every QB in every German plane when I used YAK1 for the AI.  That was when I discovered the Spitfire, now I kill all the Yaks 😎 but that is not a collector plane. Only Russian plane I like is the engine with wings, or as I call it, the Ratata (I16)

The plane I so much want to love because how it looks in and outside, is the P47 but even without enemies I get killed in it. I so hope the P38 will be more of a Bf110 as a P47. (and then there is the beautiful Albatros)

She's a treat to fly and can handle herself dancing with 109F's if you know her strengths.  Those 6x .50 Cals are shredders too.

Having recently conquered my fear of her engine, I have to agree with this actually, she's a lot more nimble than I had initially given her credit for, and if you cruise with the hood open then the view is pretty damn good too.  And one of the best looking planes in the sim IMHO...

Though call.
It's a very tight race for the JU52, Po2 and the MC 202.
But I think the price goes to the Fulgore. It's just the perfect fighter for me, quick but also nimble and it looks like all good things in the world, distilled into a single, sparkling gem.

If you like the career mode (or if you don't like the career mode yet) you should definitely give the P-40 a whirl. My longest surviving pilot (by a huge margin) gratefully relies on the ruggedness of the P-40 with embarrassing regularity. Also the career has a great mix of mission types (more interception and ground attack, less - if any - escort missions which I find the most tedious).
