The New Career - Wow!

Recommended Posts

Finally got some time this morning to delve into the new Career for a bit.

Just completed my first assigned mission in my Spitfire career over Kuban.

This is absolutely incredible! This thing exceeds even the hopes I had for it. As a SP only guy, that has been doing this for more years than I care to think about, I am very pleased with what you guys have brought us in this new Career.

Went in and made my selections, and selected to proceed. The video overlay with the narration and the animation of the planes on the map was fantastic, really gave it a sense of direction for the beginning of the Career.

My first mission we were tasked with escorting a flight of 6 - IL-2 Mod 42's across the front lines near the coast of Kuban so they could do their thing. There was no lack of activity, plenty of both air and ground. The action was superb!

This is going to be so great for us SP guys.

I fly in VR with a Rift, and performance was certainly tasking with all the activity that went on. My FPS were oftentimes in the mid to upper 40's in combat, climbing into the mid 60's and 70's when not so much activity going on. For the most part it was still fluid though, and very doable. Hope to upgrade to a new rig latter part of this year which will hopefully help me some as mine is getting a little aged. ( built in Dec 2013).

I can not even imagine how many man hours you guys had to put into this new Career Mode.  I am sure I am not alone in expressing my sincerest gratitude for what you have provided us with this!

Superb Job guys!!

Thanks for the description. I'm looking forward to starting one. Glad to hear that it is upping the game for us single player folks.

It has certainly added a massive amout to the SP side of the game.

I am currently working my way through the war flying an I-16 in Stalingrad in 1941 hoping to fight my way through to Kuban in 1943.

I fly in VR and I have to say it is just stunning.  I am using Ultra settnig and a 150km visability radius and my frames are in the mid 40's in action and can fluctuate up to 89.

I find it to be fluid and good enough for me to fly and fight in.

Loving it so far.  Great job Devs.

Question though - are you playing in expert mode? If so, are you able to hide your plane position on the map? Much of the fun for me is navigation, and artificially knowing where I am all the time kills that part.

You can use custom difficulty settings in the new Career Mode.

I have object labels enabled but navigation markers disabled.

I dont play in expert mode. I need my hand held sometimes in case I do get lost

I may get there one day but not yet.

I do a similar thing to @Space_ghost

What are your system specs? I have an i7 6700K and a GTX1080 and I'm staying in the 80s with maxed settings.

No I play in Custom, with all engine management done by me.  I personally like knowing where I am lol.

Yeah, it's sure better than the old career, and more varied than the RoF career, due to the difference in planes and armament. But... we really need radio to bring it to 1946 level.

Anyway, if you open the Missions\_gen.mission file in the mission editor you'll be able to see the last mission and really be amazed at how many trigger points there actually are.

I envy people for whom 45fps in VR is enough.

Is there some instructions for using this new campaign?

I create a personality, click proceed, get the "new Day window, click proceed, a window pops up with a B17(????) telling me a task is in progress then.......nothing. I click proceed, it does the same with a different task and....nothing...then the option is "Next Day" and I look at roster and its like I slept through it. Its like some wired dungeons and dragons turn based play.

So, I know its me, but...

Help?

well I think its interlaced. So you still get 90 fps, so far as when you move your head around, its super smooth and comfortable

Default key I turns icons off. So if you fly expert, press I then that should hide your GPS location

When I first started BoX I didn't know about this and it was set to off, probably by me pressing random buttons, but I had to navigate properly from the beginning lol.

Yes, that worked for me before yesterday. I filed a bug report in that forum section that pressing I no longer hides the plane icon. I checked and it's still mapped in the key assignments.

By default yes, at least in the Rift with ASW.

I personally have ASW turned off. Still even with fps in the 40's it is pretty smooth.

It's far from smooth, at least for me. ASW is good if you are still but not when in movement.

Isn't that the whole reason it was developed ? To reduce nausea when Frame rate dropped, by maintaining very low latency when you move your head ?

Maybe I understood it wrong, but it works pretty well for me.

Well 45 FPS is enough for me in general, the problems are the propeller disk graphic aberrations and the fact that i don't know any russian so i have to play the new campaign mode with the HUD on so i can understand what to do. hopefully Mods on mode comes soon and we can change the voices to English (and maybe paint the prop transparent) without getting banned from multiplayer

edit: with HUD on i often have to play as low as 27 fps in VR which doesnt make me sick but the game really looks terrible with that plus all the stuttering the new patch borught

I've flown a couple missions and I have to say the new Career Mode is great and there has obviously been a lot of hard work done to improve it. I'm mainly a MP flyer nowadays as it's my belief that SP just hasn't been done properly since the days of Falcon4 and Rowan's Battle of Britain (Dynamic campaigns). Those that have been flying flight sims for a while will probably relate.

While this career mode is better and certainly moving in the right direction, I'm still having a tough time due to the poor AI. For me a big part of SP is how your flight behaves.  Even after the update, trying to fly formation with a flight is quite interesting and an immersion killer IMHO. Sometimes the flight lead is flying so fast you can't catch them in combat power. Other times they'll be weaving back and forth for no apparent reason, and other times they'll slow to near stall speeds for no reason. And this is all on the ingress route, we haven't even hit the combat area where there's a whole other can of worms that most are already aware of.

Anyways that's my opinion and I'm surprised that it didn't get fixed as priority. That said, I do appreciate the work done, but I'm unsure how anyone who flies a lot virtually could handle these limitations.

I guess it depends on the mission. On an intercept mission, your aim is to get there as fast as possible. On normal missions, they fly at 50% power to conserve fuel (makes sense). If they are escorting another flight, or patrolling, they weave back and forth, either to stay with the escorted group or for better visibility. The only thing that annoys me is that when they alter course at a waypoint:

1. they don't announce it in the radio and you're taken by surprise

2. some of the planes turn wildly, usually coming way out of formation and being a danger to me (or maybe I wasn't standing where I was supposed to be)

I myself haven't seen any strange behavior in this regard, actually I've seen the contrary in my last mission:

- large group of IL2 staying in formation even under attack, only changing course to avoid immediate threat

- enemies trying to lure escort far from the group while their other planes are harassing the group.

- enemies usually trying to attack in pairs, with one plane sitting higher than the other, waiting to pounce.

- at the ground target, IL2s doing a superb circle and attacking one by one, really beautiful to see

That's by far more discipline than I've ever seen in a multiplayer mission.

You are describing what happens when you are not assigned to fly that mission. I have experienced this at the start of careers, two days in a row. There will be days when you fly both scheduled missions. Just a bit of variety, nothing is wrong with the campaign.

What you're seeing there is the overall campaign difficulty. Not sure what it does exactly, I went with easy. Off topic, were the germans all such bad pilots? And why did they have so few planes? Weird...

What you actually want is the settings just before any mission, i think the button will read Normal or Expert, or Custom depending on your choice, click that and enjoy.

Those are some interesting points. Perhaps the AI isn’t as wonky as I thought. I’ll have another go at it with a different, more positive perspective. Thanks for the response.

Me too especially in maps like Kuban where navigation is a breeze anyhow, but it seems that theres a kind of GPS (little black plane on the map) that shows me where I am all the time. But I thought I turned all that off and chose expert mode.

You can also use Custom Difficulty and enable anything you want, except for Navigation Markers. That takes out the GPS and any map contacts around you.

Yeah I did that turned everything off except warmed off engine, then selected expert mode. Perhaps its on in expert mode by default?

Try setting difficulty to higher level  ;)       ...and higher density if you want more planes.

Damn I thought density was the amount of ground troops so I had it set to low. Doh!

The new career is a masterpiece. Although I usually prefer fighters, I've already fallen head-over-heels for the A-20 and started my first career flying it over Stalingrad.

Flying over the new Stalingrad map with the new clouds and 150km horizon feels like a whole new game. My jaw is on the floor the entire time because it looks so good

And bomber missions are actually viable/interesting in the new career mode. In the old campaign mode, you encountered enemy fighter opposition exactly at the "action point" every single time. There were also rarely more than four bombers in your flight, and often only one or two, and the AI liked to gang up on the player. As a result, i tended to take significant damage or get shot down on most bomber sorties.

In the career missions I'm flying with 8 A-20s and about as many Yak-1 escorts. On the first two sorties we encountered no enemy fighters. On the third, we got bounced by 12 Bf-109s well on our way back to base. It was unpredictable and exciting. I've never seen so many aircraft in one spot in any of this game's single player content before. AI appears markedly improved. Performance remained good the whole time as well.

I will be spending a lot of time with the career mode. Two thumbs way, way up from me.

Are all three careers connected? So if I start in Moscow I can continue into the other two careers with the same character?

Yes, wow!!

I only played two missions. The first one i lost track of other planes and rtb the first time (my bad).

The second was packed with action, ingot 6 kills, and made it back. It was really fun

I still have to figure out how the campaign interface works. One mission sort of played itself without me. I think I clicked on some icon on the map for that.

Looks very promising so far!!
