please remember the settings here are to make spotting most competitive, not to give the very best graphical experience. And remember that with deferred shading, the jaggies is something we'll have a hard time getting rid of (without blurry lenses).

### Introduction ###

Hello fellow Simulator Enthusiasts,

Steam's SuperSampling reduces the size of aircrafts and tanks at range, so much that spotting contacts can be quite difficult, because they start becoming invisible.

That is because using Supersampling information gets merged and hence lost. The result is that an aircraft at 15km range may be less than a (few) subpixels in size and is consumed by the sky around the subpixel. Supersampling too high makes aircrafts invisible as a result. But we cannot fly completely without it, as distortion profiles and sweetspot depend on it. Drop it too low, and the outer edges of your vision get more blurry.

### Golden Rules ###

Spoiler

- 90Hz and a steady framerate help spotting and gunnery more than any other setting.

- Don't run your headset 1:1 at its physical resolution, it requires a bit more for the distortion profile, around 1.3x minimum.

- These settings are meant for the average computer.

- You want a static picture, to spot moving objects against that. This is why landscape filter is "blurry" and shadows are either "Extreme" or "Off" (they flicker).

- HDR enabled + HQ clouds + heavy clouds on map + high resolution (Reverbs) = engine grinding to a halt even on RTX3090. So I'm running with HDR disabled now.

- Keep the gamma at 0.8000 or even 0.7000, which makes far distant aircrafts as dark as possible - they are usually black dots.

- Look into one direction and hold your head steady - notice any "bugs" moving around? That can be a bandit.

- Check your six for SCG.

### SteamVR settings ###

Go to the SteamVR settings, enable "Advanced Settings".

1) General: Keep Global Resolution at 100%.

2) Video: Keep Global Resolution at 100%.

>>> Video Setting Per Application: Press it and look for IL-2 Great Battles. Change your resolution per eye only here.

For example: If you have a Vive Pro, your physical resolution per eye is 1440 x 1600 ; horizontal x vertical.

Recommendation: 1.3x of the vertical physical resolution per eye, so that the distortion profiles are properly drawn. In our example: 1.3 x 1600 = 2080. So 1872 x 2080.

Maximum: As high as your hardware allows to keep 90Hz. Not higher than 1.5x of vertical physical res. In our example, the max would be 1.5x1600p = 2400. So 2160 x 2400.

Beyond that, objects start vanishing at ranges when they should not for headsets with less physical pixels than Reverb G1/G2!

HP Reverb G2: Try 60% if you have an RTX 3080 and go as high as your hardware allows.

Advanced Supersampling-Filter: Disable it. It blurs too much.

Pause VR while headset is inactive: Disabled.

3) Start/Close: Turn Screen Off: 5 Minutes, Turn Controllers Off: 5 Minutes, Close Steam after: Never.

A free performance boost for WMR

Description:

Windows Mixed Reality pre-allocates monitors in VR. Take a look at your Windows' monitors (Rightclick to Desktop -> Display Settings)

You will suddenly see many monitors while Mixed Reality Portal is active. These are rendered live, even if you don't use them. The more monitors you have, the higher the performance cost. Get performance boost by disabling them:

1. Launch Registry Editor
2. Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Holographic"
3. If the "PreallocateVirtualMonitors" REG_DWORD is not present, create it by selecting Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and entering PreallocateVirtualMonitors as the name
4. If the "PreallocateVirtualMonitors" REG_DWORD is present (or you just created it), double-click the entry and change "Value data" from 1 (its default value) to 0 (zero)
TRUE - 1

5. Virtual monitors will now allocate when you attempt to launch a Win32 application in Windows Mixed Reality instead of pre-allocating. To reset this and re-enable virtual monitor pre-allocation, return the DWORD "Value data" to 1.

6. Restart computer.

Absolute Quality VR settings in Reverb G2

(My personal go-to, they allow absolutely the best spotting imho, IL-2 scales correctly here.)

There is a way to enjoy IL-2 in all its glory with Motion Smoothing - while minimizing any artifacts. Yes, the amount of artifacts are drastically reduced with the right settings - why is that?

- Motion Smoothing needs depth information. It doesn't get this from IL-2, so Motion Smoothing works based only on sharpness of the render.

- Motion Smoothing builds accuracy quickly. But not instantly, hence we must avoid it turning on and off all the time.

- In order to maximise Motion Smoothing's accuracy and minimise any artifacts, the picture needs to be as sharp as possible. So let's do that:

1) Set SteamVR SS to 100%, both in the Video Tab and the IL-2's Game Tab.

2) Disable Advanced Super Sample Filtering.

3) Force enable Motion Smoothing! Apply "set Motion Smoothing per application" in SteamVR -> you must get in VR, open SteamVR Dashboard with your Controller, find WMR icon on the bottom-left hand side, and click through the three tabs there). Then in SteamVR's Video tab, go to individual game settings and select "Always On" for Motion Smoothing.

4) Keep HUD disabled as much as possible. Remember the thing about lack of Depth Information? Right! The HUD and FPS counter are at the same distance as that forest from 3km away is! Disable it, a true VR simulator pilot flies by instruments!

In IL-2's Startup.cfg disable any Dynamic Resolution, disable any MSAA, disable Bloom!! This defeats 95% of all artifacts. The only artifact remaining will be an enemy plane's wings if it pulls up hard at high velocity in front of you. That's mostly 2-3 seconds of your 30 minute sortie.

If you do not have an RTX3090, but an RTX3080, lower ingame settings - not SteamVR's SS if you use Motion Smoothing. Check cloud quality = 2, then preset = 2 first, then (if you have to) shadows_quality = 3. It should hold 45Hz now. If not, check your software stack. Do not run third party antivirus software if you're a VR player. It introduces latencies which you don't want for Motion Smoothing either, or for feeling sick in VR. Run only Windows Defender, or keep a bucket nearby, or enjoy too many artifacts again.

If you can run these settings, the game is just beautiful. 6K resolution, proper scaling (I checked, don't worry), and the feeling of 90Hz.

If you don't sport a GPU from 2014, you won't need Anisotropic Filtering.

### Performance Issues ###

Please remember that all systems are different, and adjust a few details accordingly. I recommend you use the application fpsVR to see whether your performance is limited by the CPU or the GPU. Look for the frametimes. Here are some suggestions to reduce the stress:

1) Clean uninstall of an older PiTool is a requirement: Turn off PiTool. Then uninstall PiTool via Windows, then delete the following folders:

C:\ProgramData\pimax

2) Get the latest PiTool with Pimax Experience.

HMD: Render Quality 1.0,  Contrast Red&Green +1. Contrast Blue 0. Brightness -2 for every color.

Games: Smart Smoothing off, Fixed Foveated Rendering off, Parallel Projection off, Vive game only off, Field of View Normal, Refreshrate 90Hz.

Software, secondary settings:

IPD Adjustment - all credits to user dstar from openmr forums!

Do not trust the pop-up IPD. Pimax headsets aren't accurate in what they display as IPD. There is a method to dial in your IPD with Pimax headsets:

1: Copy this grid picture to  C:\Program Files\Pimax\Runtime\resource

2: Rename pimax_default.jpg to old_pimax_default.jpg

4: Now restart the computer, make sure Pimax World View is off. You have effectively replaced the Pimax logo with a grid that allows you to dial in the IPD, horizontal and vertical fit of the headset. Put the lines over each other, while ignoring that displayed IPD value.

Tried it and with Lefuneste's mod in combination my scores on Coconut's server have gone up right away. Much better ident now even when not zoomed it. I've gone with High settings as I tune this in better.

Combining sharpen in game and blurried terrain , now there is no need for that much SS anymore.

Kind of you can control the amount of shimmering you are willing to see , by reducing or adding SS.

Looks better and performs better.

Its a win win setting.

Finally tried this mod and it is game changing for VR (I have a Rift).   Mapped it to my joystick zoom button with joytokey and able to ID way further away now.   Now I won't get killed in Coconut's as fast, thanks Lefuneste.

Gave these settings a go and agree they considerably improve contact spotting. Easy now even in bad weather. The only thing I run differently is "high" rather than "ultra" as at ultra heavy cloudcovers a kill my fps. Wish clouds had their own setting.

I tried these settings last night and the game looks and runs great. Now that my SS is back to 1.0, I moved up from low to balanced settings with no loss in FPS so far. I'll have to try the high setting later on. Thanks for sharing this!

Yes, you need to set it in the default settings in the upper section of the d3dx.ini file instead of under the different [key] sections further below.

I tried them out and I was seeing the targets clear as day 5KM out and I could see the dot at around 7KM plus it looked great!  Thanks so much!

Hi Sire,

welcome to the VR community!

You'll find supersampling in SteamVR's settings, then select manual override under Video. Under Developer you'll find the Adv SS Filter.

In the game there is Anti-Aliasing, but no way to edit VR's own SS settings. Please do that using SteamVR. You can also download and install "Advanced OpenVR" (Google has details) to change it while you're already in VR!

P.S. VR takes a bit of studying how to do what and which, it's not ready out of the box for IL-2 since IL-2 originally wasn't made for VR. It may take a few hours but the joy of having it set up properly makes up for the several hours invested. It's like modding SkyrimVR. Takes time, but dang, it's worth it when done

Just want to say that with that mod and these configs I went from flying for hours and never even engaging a target to landing my first online vr kill within 5 minutes of takeoff in a yak1-s69. The zoom enables me to correctly identify threats instead of always guessing. I didn't have a spotting issue just a indetifying issue and this solved it. Thanks a ton.

Agreed, that was the largest improvement for me as well. I flew a whole TAW campaign without this mod, and always had to fly within gun range to even ID people.. very much less than ideal. Being able to ID from far away is amazing.

Hi Beazil,

the herementioned copy and paste settings for lefuneste's mod are for Rift or Odyssey users. There need to be different values for each headset, as they demand to be customized. Have you found some working for the Vive so far? I could add some for the Vive, but since I've given my Vive away a while ago, I would not be able to confirm their validity 100% on my own, and thus decided not to post them. 🙁

I will check later if I find some in lefuneste's thread and include them here as well.

It should work either way.  only difference between both is pressing only arrow key or alt+arrow key to get zoom.

And tried your VR settings couple days ago, difference is like night and day what i had before, much more enjoyable to fly now.

Hi Algy,

The settings are from my machine, an I7 7700K at 4.9GHz, DDR4 memory at 3200MHz, SSD, and a GTX1080 with powertarget at 110%.

I don't think the rig you mentioned could hold an adequate framerate with these settings.

@Algy-Lacey , you can lower shadows to 2 , preset to 1, grass_distance to 0, land_tex_lods to 1, multisampling to 1. Maybe this will bring up your FPS. I still recommend you to use the migoto mod and its settings for your Rift or Odyssey.

Nice one, SCG_Fenris_Wolf... (How do I include someone's name in Blue like you did with my name? I'm guessing that notifies the person tagged?)

I will give those settings a try this evening.

And Lefuneste's 3DMigoto Mod is going to be essential for me, due to my slow rig I will be running constant ASW 45fps, with the propellor turned off so there are no artefacts.

And lastly, thanks for the tip in your original post - that putting Landscape Filter to Blurry will correct the shimmering textures that I experienced the first time I tried IL-2 BOK.

Hey fenris,

I use your copy and paste settings, do those in the startup config effect the ingame options as well? The color correction maybe due to the gamma adjustment makes planes so much easier to spot and I don't want to change the preset to mess anything up, I only have a 1070 so my frames aren't as good as they could be. I just want to make sure I can change the preset and keep your settings?

Also I copy and pasted everything for both files, I haven't even been turning on the colorfix apparently with the mod, didn't know you had to activate it. These settings help so much I had previously set them back to default and the difference is night and day, it's so washed out in the rift that spotting planes is nearly impossible since everything has the same colors.

Also check this out, the VR limiter yeah? I noticed that while sitting on the runway with no air rushing over the cockpit you can move out more right like it has been stated? Check say the yak69 you can get in super close to the gunsight when you are still, but when you start going at speed you can't anymore, I think there is a bug where the wind pressure effect is effecting how close you can get to the gunsight and not just how far you can stick your head out of the sides of the open cockpit. I was all happy they fixed how close you can lean in but once I started flying it was back to the same. I think we should report this as an actual bug as I am sure that is not intended to work like that.

Hi Jon,

yes you can adjust a lower preset for example to 2, and Land_tex_lod/landscape detail range to 1 as well. I also recommend then putting grass to 0.00, and lowering shadows to 2 in the startup.cfg. This should give you a nice performance boost.

By the way, you might want to use the first post in the thread as a base to work from. The one you quoted is outdated, I'll mark it as such, thanks 😀👍

Very good finding on the VR limiter. I didn't know about that bug yet. I'll check it out as well. Yes, we might want to create some bug reports about it, on the Russian forums as well.

Hey fenris,

i took a long brake from il2 in vr since last year december. Back then i could play the game @1.3 pd with an amd 290 card with asw perfectly fine.

Today i have tried your settings and i got not the performance i had hoped for. I had Steam resolution at 100% on the rift what is about 1.42 pd i suppose and exactly your graphics settings. I was flying on the WOL server on the kuban map and my frames where between 35-45 near the ground with forced asw. I have a 1080ti i7 4790k @4.9Ghz and 2400Mhz Ram and game on Ssd. Is the performance normal and what settings would you tweak for better performance?

Btw the game looks stunning with your settings and Lefuneste‘s mod, thanks for your work.

Somethings not right you should be seeing better performance than that. What preset are you using? Ultra?
