What was "Wow!" Moment?

Recommended Posts

When the Ju 52 came out i was just messing around with the the old gal doing goofy aerobatics and stuff with 8 la 5s after me. Anyway, i was looping under a bridge and and as i am climbing near vertical I roll to check the bridge behind me and one of the AI La 5s hit the ice following me under the bridge. He just slid and slid and slid. I don't know why but that has stayed with me since. That does remind me too the first time i crash landed in the snow (inb4 summer maps) and saw the tracks you leave behind I thought that was just phenomenal.

Yeah, i remember ditching my plane for the first time, spining arround and bouncing of trees, was intense an put a big grin onto my face. Even going down as controlled as possible is entertaining!

Having Waw moments every evening in VR.

Doesnt matter if it is damage model, close maneuvers, debris flying all around you, hitting the ground with camera going outside and than returns to the seat with deep breathing, or just viewing the scenery of the wonderful environment.

One of best moments was probably on the expert map in the dynamic war. I had VR headset just few days and was flying lonely in mig 3 through the clouds and climbing. It was a winter map and suddenly when I flew out of the clouds, I saw  at least 8 Stukas flying in the precise row formation. They were little bit above me and in the same moments they started to turn over the wings and one after one were going to dive. I had to turn my head up and to the left side to see the scenery going just above me and the 3D immersion was so wonderful that I totaly forgot to attack them, and whole long 10s was just watching them.

Waw moment which still repeats again and again is when I fly in plane (no matter which type) over the Stalingrad. The ruins, the smoke and the Volga river just below me is something what hits my heart every time and what I really Love.

WOL has a map where you start at dawn in near darkness. You take off and the sun is rising and you can see all the little shadows on the snow mounds. The whole experience makes you feel like you are in that moment in 1942 on the steppes of Russia in a 109.... W....O.....W.

Discovered yesterday while waiting for the take off, my plane wobbled just slighty from the air my flight leaders prop pushes at take off. its barely noticeable but still included in this sim.

I'm not sure if it was a complete graphics fluke, or if I was just a little bit turn't up at the time....but I actually saw the windscreen and the dash move toward me when I nosed into the deck, right before i was killed.  I'm almost convinced that it was more cerebral than modeled lol, but it was definitely a WOW moment that I've been hunting for ever since.

I've become quite efficient at hitting the deck nose first too.  I'm really good at it in fact.  Maybe the best.....

My wow moment was respect between community and developers and their mutual understanding and teamwork. After many years of being a toilet paper for Gaijin, I am enjoying this game. And I will have much more wow moments after I swap from GT740m to my new PC with GT1060 muhahahahaha.

That can be quiet violent if you fly head on past another plane. It can really upset things.

In a practice flight, I was parking my plane in a pen and, as I was turning, I clipped my tail on something.  I looked outside but didn't notice any damage, so I thought I'd got away with it.  I decided to take the plane back up and as I was taking off the rudder fell off.  I was quite impressed!

I had a pretty *oh shi-* moment on a multiplayer server a few days ago. I was in a 190, climbing away from a Russian plane who was approaching from my 3/4 o'clock. As he was reaching what looked to be his stall limit, I watched his nose erupt in muzzle flashes. I wasn't too worried, since he was at least 500m off and I figured it was a desperate shot. Then I heard a loud bang and realized there was no canopy around me anymore. I decided at that time it would be best to leave.

Yesterday took heavy damage a busted wing and an iffy engine. It was 200 kilometers and I never thought I'd make it, when I got to about 50km from my home base the engine starts leaking. Finally got to the home airport and the engine dies, but it died just within perfect reach of the runway and I just floated down onto it safe and sound, mission accomplished. Of course recounting this it doesn't seem so special, but at the time it felt like a heroic survival against all odds combined with a healthy dose of luck!

To echo what others have said, and apologies for those who don't have VR (I know we really rub it in) but in VR the sim is one big wow moment. VR is just so incredibly immersive and unlike many other VR games that are full of annoying shimmering BOX just looks so perfect. It's almost ahead of it's time in how good it looks, how they have managed to get it so clear and without jaggies!

Another one was flying in moscow and accidentally when trying out my adjustable stabilizer finding myself with a head full of clouds. It really made me feel as if I didn't know up from down (I didn't) and in VR was actually a little frightening because for a split second or two it gave me a sense of the panic and confusion fighter pilots in that situation would feel. It's the panic that kills you, and as you try wildly to get out it suddenly dawns on you that by panicking you've made it much worse, and by that point you know it's too late! It just seems more tragic to die, not in heroic battle, but because of a bonehead mistake! But it really felt like a moment!

Also just completed my first ever expert difficulty mission doing my own navigation in VR without any labels and wont go back now. I really feel very chuffed and realize now that the navigation aspect of the sim actually makes the long flights (were on normal you just sit there or speed the game up out of boredom) interesting because it gives you something to do! It's also just one more layer of immersion. Well before I go completely OT toodle pip...

First time I actually said wow out loud to myself was after dropping 2 low level 500kg bombs on a target in WoL with a 5 second delay so I could swing around and watch the fireworks, a split second after mine went off two 1000kg bombs went off, I swear I could feel the percussion! Explosions look great in VR

it was last year when I got the game because of the VR support and wanted to see if it were better than DCS. And it was. Oh how much better it was.. and still is. And I was recording every single sortie and every single skirmish, engagement and a dogfight. And then about 6-8 hours in to the game I experienced this:

I'm the guy in the yak69..  This kind of immersion in VR was mind blowing.

Tonight I was putting a few 20 mike mikes into a train with my MC202 and touched a tree.  She spun a little to the right but came back on line. Looked over at my right wing and oh boy it was cracked about 3/4 of the way through! Broke off the attack and managed to get home and land. Had to go get a drink at the officers club.

Another wow moment, after flying a HE111 with 2x 1000kg bombs for at least 40 minutes to target with my friend with same plane and loadout, we watched the factory disappear as 4 tonnes hit that. We laughed maniacally over TS for at least 5 minutes.

I was in a Stuka, near Stalingrad.  Billowing black smoke and sporadic fires off to the west. I was at about 3,000m when we spotted the train we were after.  I opened the portal to see below me and line up on the locomotive, moving my head around the yoke to get a clearer view.  I was in and out of some scattered clouds, but got a good look at the target.  I lowered the dive brakes, dropped the throttle to idle, and looped over through the last cloud.  As I closed on the target, I turn on my sirens, the wail will be the last sound those on this train hear!  Bombs away!  I roll out at a few hundred feet over the treetops, sirens off and brake up.  I turn behind me to see my addition to the smoke and fire of the battle.  There is nothing like that feeling!

A while ago I was on WoL, decided to take the Jabo 190 out for a run on a factory. Regrettably, I ended up hitting an already bombed out building. Feeling somewhat bummed, I decided to RtB for another 250.

As I began my egress, I checked behind me and saw that a Russian fighter was diving on me. As low as I was, I decided that my best chance would be to scissor and hope my high roll rate could get me out of this. As I began my turns, I checked behind me again and noted, with some distress, that another Russian plane (an La-5) had joined the chase. Figuring that forcing an overshoot of the first Russian was only gonna set up the La-5 for an easy killshot, I decided to firewall the engine and try to ignore the rounds pinging off my fuselage. Convinced things couldn't get any worse, I looked backed back to see a third plane was now back there. However, my mood shifted once I realized that the third aircraft was a 109 that had just dived after our little Konga line. The 109 fired into the La-5, striking it's engine before blowing past it. The first Russian on my tail then got the same treatment, losing it's wing.

The damaged La-5 peeled off to disengage, but I figured to turn around to finish the job the 109 had started. Honestly, I felt a bit bad as I fired from pretty much point blank just as his engine failed, but I wanted some credit of my own. After watching him go down, I realized two things: that I had inadvertently flown back towards the factory, and that there was a LaGG diving on me from my 12. Not wanting to get caught up in a dogfight with the damage that was done to my plane already, I committed to the head-on, coming the closest I've ever been to another plane without hitting it. A hit to his horizontal stabilizer broke it off and he plowed into the ground.

And that's when yet another Russian fighter came at me, leading me to drop to below treetop levels and begin weaving through them. Unfortunately, I ended up snagging my wingtip on one and ended up skidding across the ground, broken but alive.

Just the Kuban landscape has been giving me a few "wow moments" lately. To say nothing of dogfighting over it.

I remember clearly when I first noticed a weird graphic glitch when I was struggling to shoot down an IL-2 with my Mc.202. After a while I figured out that the "glitch" was actually my bullets ricocheting of the IL armor!

My most WOW moment was when flying online with friends on WOL some long time ago - we took to the skies in our Peshkas, built a formation, didn't get lost, flew along a river and dropped bombs on several bridges and each one of us got to destroy a target. We got out in a quick and professional manner and landed safely at the nearest friendly base without issues. No adventures, no screw ups, no fails and no funny business. I was in true awe - we never made such a good run ever. Pretty ninja if you ask me.

I like this thread so I'm going to bump it with a new "Wow" - I was flying a tanta-JU mission to drop paratroops at dawn.  Our flight of four got jumped by a few IL's and our escort promptly pounced on them...great, except for the migs that followed!  We flew into range and the search lights just lit us up!  That experience of dawn on the horizon, but the defenseless 52's lit up by the beams and getting constantly harassed by the migs...tremendous.  Our flight leader was downed, but two of us got our sticks on target!  Hope the lived to fight another day!

An old Wow! moment from IL-2 from away back :)

I was flying an Fw190 and was trying to clear the airspace over our airbase.  I got into a fight with a P39 at around 3000m, it was a tough fight and I had run out of cannon rounds and was relying on my MGs.  I fired my last few rounds in wild hope and he entered a flat spin while avoiding my shots.  With zero ammo I took the opportunity of his unfortunate spin to make good my escape.  I dove for the deck and a very quick landing while he was busy recovering from the spin, or not as the case may be...

...I landed and hit refly, started my engine and just as I was about to start taxiing, the still spinning P39 I was fighting a few minutes earlier landed right on top of me.  We both had a good laugh about it over chat later. :D

On TAW with a 109, I was engaging some IL2s but got a flak hit: fuel leak.

I was about 40km from my base, already low on fuel, and I didn't want to loose my only F4 (was one of the first map), as I could see the fuel gauge going down. So I started to climb full throttle, around the best climbrate speed, straight to the base. When I reached ~3k altitude, out of fuel... I was still about 25-30km from the base. Thinking I wouldn't make it, I started to descent at the best glide speed, closing rads, switch manuel pitch to increase it to max angle. At least I would ditch it near the base.

Finally, at the last 50m over the ground, the runway was not so far... I held my 109 as much as I could, pulling flaps down, lowering the gear at the very last moment, touching down at stalling speed and... the 109 just rolled and stoped right at the beginning of the runway.

"Aircraft landed" :yahoo:

Had a similar experience myself but being in a spitfire I did not use the flaps at all because they are more like air brakes :-)    I lowered the gear just in time and luckily did not land early as that airfield had a ridge on the boundary!

This is so shameful, when I see such situations like this. Where one Russian plane after one are engaging the germans and all of them gradually are going down. Instead of kill him and take over the superior of the sky.

Just perfect. THose supply and para missions in more planes are the best for virtual flying. Both for you inside this formation, and for other as attacking fighters.

Yesterday i was at the tail of a Lagg and the first and only burst from my fw190 produced a big explosion, tearing the whole plane appart. looked and sounded quite spectacular. is  this something that came with the new update? never encountered something similar in 2.0

My wow moment was probably while firing at a 109 in my MiG-3 and the fuel tank exploded (not caught fire, but actually exploded) and knocked out my own propeller. It was just such a cool moment.
