Was fun indeed, @US103_Baer! I got on about an hour late, but got to participate in some nice furballs on the first map before we switched over to Gothas in the next map. We got 5 Gothas in a high-altitude formation at one point and level bombed an airfield, which was good fun! After this, I switched to Il-2 and tried some tanks. Conclusion? I suck as a tanker!  To cap it all off, I went to Flying Circus and had some really entertaining 1 on 1 duels with @GCF. Was a pleasure flying with you Sir!

See you guys on Cuban's server next Thursday!

Thanks mate, was great fun, really enjoyed it ! thanks for the games.

Reminder we're on Cuban/SteveFs Syndicate Server this week.

Our livestream should kickoff by 830pm EST here https://www.youtube.com/user/PaulLMF

Looks like i'll have a bit of time at the end of session this week, so might try adding an FC stream if enough folks head over there afterwards.

Work + college studies combined to make me a bit late for last Thursday's fly in again, but once I joined I got right into the action! Low overcast ceilings made for some very interesting fighting for sure! Bristols bombing targets down low, Dolphins causing mayhem at the cloud base, and SPADs lurking in the clear blue above - no matter where we went, there was action! :icon_mad: Afterwards, Butzzell, Dudley, and I were joined by Baer as we tested out the new Camel's capabilities in Flying Circus. Our conclusion? The Camel there seems to have a pretty shocking flat flight to instant climb ability! Most engagements, I could handle 2 foes simultaneously and have a good shot at winning; when I was 1 on 1 with anyone, I could pretty much outclimb, outturn, and outspeed them. Dare I say it...but I think it may need to be nerfed juuust a tad. [Takes cover and puts on steel brodie helmet.] Not to the extent it was in ROF, but maybe just taken down a bit? Or perhaps it's fine and the competition (looking at you, Dr 1 and Pfalz) needs to be buffed just a bit.

Following this, I had some entertaining Camel on Camel duels with GCF!

Interesting night! A decent crowd of over 27 with a low cloud base kept most of the action low, but there were some engagements high in the empty blue.
Being the claustrophobic type, I ended up doing quite a bit of that high Nav by dead reckoning, which actually worked... Mostly :)

Wasn't the happiest Mess later that evening as our CO, and leading ace, Cpt Hunter failed to return from a patrol shortly after scoring his 26th victory.

Also noticed a couple of mass discos that affected some and not others, possibly caused by the current cold weather spell in the US?

Here's our stream.https://youtu.be/TTyzVisp34g

YouTube issues are resolved and full steam available with timestamps now. YouTube seemed to actually respond to my feedback.

Great to see everyone out again.

We were missing Larner this week so scoring was a bit lighter than usual! Still, a solid 8 downed without loss, although Hobbs was captured after having engine trouble behind enemy lines near Metz and had to ditch. He got it working again but then hit bumpy ground taking off and wrote his Spad off!

The Metz map was spent helping protect the HPs as they worked to roll the map against some determined fighter opposition and most victories there will be rejected for lack of witnesses over enemy territory, but a special Salute to Hotlead for phoning in the confirmation of a J5 Dr1. Our Adjutant will be pleased :icon_e_salute:

For Verdun we tried something different, escorting Talbot's recon in an effort to get Spad 13s. This worked well though we had to deal with a Dr1 on the way back.  By the time Arty was done too, not much time remained and the 13s sat in a hanger unused.

Here's the stream. Timestamps to action in the description.

Looking forward to next week on Cuban's.

Lol! Salute back at ya! I happened to be limping across the trenches in a Handley-Page and saw it go down. Nice shooting! icon_e_salute.gif

Last night started with...Metz. Ugh. Since we'd been on that map quite a few times recently, JG1 decided to trade German fighters for Allied bombers and knock out all the targets to roll the map as soon as possible. There was level-bombing, dive-bombing, and even some epic Handley-Page-vs-the-world dogfights!

Afterwards, we returned to the German side of life and had some good coordinated patrols. All of us scored some good kills; personally, I ended up adding 2 more victories to my One Life to Live streak and my wingmen and I RTB'd safely afterwards. Well done lads!

After that, it was off to Flying Circus for some more dogfighting tests between the SPADs, Camels, Dr 1s, and D.IIIas. Really looking forward to the new planes, they'll add some new flavor to the dogfighting scene! smile.png

Anyway, here's the archived livestream:

I can't believe we didn't see you guys over Sivry. We did all 3 recons and by checking the game time on the streams i can see we were doing recon 3 and 1 about the time you engaged the Nieuports. Unfortunately none of us saw the gunfire, it would've been a great time to bounce :icon_e_biggrin:

On the return we hit Hammer's Dr1 at '2:46pm' over the Arty spot location (German lines) at cloud height - that was just West of you, but again, no viz.

Can see from your stream you experienced the difficulty SPADS are having in FC. It's very difficult to get away after a pass, it doesn't retain energy at all. That's against the Pfalz and the Dr1, can you imagine the DVa or D7? Bit frustrated honestly.

Also weird our us103 skins didn't appear in your view of us, but when you flew out with Talbots skin it was visible.

This turned out to be a most memorable session complete with long dogfights, some extreme luck, a couple of very real engagement scenarios and multiple heart-attacks!

Cuban really freshened things up with a great mid-1916 map. It looked tough at first N11s, N17s, DH2s and RE8 vs Halb DIIs, Alb DIIs, EIII and DFWs. Added to that we were low on numbers with only 3 US103 available to fly. But Recons gave better planes and we have a great Recon pilot, so really nothing to lose!

Of course the Central guys were wise to this so our 2 N11s and RE8 were greeted by 4 Halb D2s from JG1! A fantastic dogfight ensued and ultimately ended in highly dramatic fashion. During this fight Lt Larner was forced to ditch near the German trenches, his Nieuport overturned and promptly exploded into flames. A bizarre end to a great streak of 21, and really rotten luck.

Later Talbot and I had some excellent engagements with J30 Albs and JG1 Albs. Both were highly tactical and anyone making the slightest mistake paid dearly. These 2 fights reminded me a lot of the descriptions in Biddle's book "The Way Of The Eagle" and McCudden's early encounters from "5 years In The RFC"

Thanks again to everyone who flew and to Cuban for an excellent Map!

Our Stream is here, timestamps done.

We had a highly-eventful night that started off with a bang...quite literally lol! (I crashed into JG1_Butzzell while we were maneuvering for a shot on Baer. This was totally my fault and could have been avoided.) However, up until that point, our 4 ship Halberstadt flight did very well against enemies from above, shooting one down and sending Baer away with bullet holes and more than likely picking pieces of Halberstadt out of his flying scarf.

Afterwards, JG1 switched to flying Albatrosses and patrolled over enemy lines, bursting balloons and looking for trouble. I had one moment where I dove on a Nieuport 17 and then he completely disappeared, probably due to disconnection from the server. We concluded the evening in Rise of Flight by facing off against SPADs in a well-fought draw and then returning to base. Despite my dumb collision earlier in the evening, I managed to add 1 enemy aircraft and 1 balloon to my latest "streak," so we shall see how it goes from there.

In Flying Circus, Butzzell, Talbot, and I conducted more outfighting tests with the Dr 1 and found that it seems to have an advantage over the Camel in a left turn, when both are loaded with 50% fuel. We also discovered what may be my new signature move...you'll have to watch the stream to find out. :P

See you next week on Wargrounds! :)

Pretty average session for most of US103rd. We didn't lose anyone and Larner did find plenty of trouble and got a few, but i never even fired my guns the whole night!

For Summer Verdun we had just 3 Nieuport 11s, so decided to go all out for the Recons to get something better. Parsons and i did that while Larner distracted the Rolands and Halberstadts. Talbot and i made sure of the Arty while Larner attracted the attention of the entire Fliegertruppen des deutschen Kaiserreiches!

Jumped in a Spad 150 which was now available and headed out to help out Larner...just as the map rolled. Not sure quite why, and at the time i didn't see any chat, though apparently it was mentioned. Certainly would have voted against if i'd seen it, especially after doing all that work. Hell, i'd even been practicing in the N11 this week for just such an eventuality. That early Verdun map isn't bad either, no flak fence and Central probably have the stronger planeset so, yeah, bit confused about that one.

Beaucamp was a weird. We went high, low and medium alts up and down the mud, but barely even saw a Central 2-seater and only a couple of D7fs. JG1_Hotlead did get a good bounce at one point and another D7f (Red nosed i think) was super high over us quite a lot, but never came down. There did seem to be fights going on but low over ground targets on the Central side . In the end Larner went off low in enemy territory to get a scrap, downing at least 2, but unfortunately without witnesses.

Here's the stream with timestamps.

Had a good time last night! Started things out with high-alt patrols and flying the Fokker D.VIIF, which I haven't done for a while! Still debating whether I like it or the D.XII better for high altitude operations. Then, I took the Albatros D.Va for some lower altitude defense options...and ended that by unceremoniously smashing into I_Got_Shot's Camel from behind. No excuse for that really; I got too greedy. Sorry about that mate! :(

Afterwards, I ran some tests in Quick Mission about the best way to attack a Felixstowe and live to tell the tale. (Hint: It ain't from directly above and behind! :P

Finally, I went to New Fliers and Friends for some entertaining dogfights between myself, Larner, and Baer. DH.2s, Fokker E.IIIs, Nieuports, Rolands, Strutters, Halberstadts...had a lot of fun puttering around in those old birds! 😄

Really interesting scenario this week. Autumn 1917 but with thick 7/8 cloud around 1250m. This meant there were some gaps to climb thru and use to navigate from above but it wasn't easy. Added to that was a strong Northerly wind.

Personally i liked the heavy, broken clouds, though if something like 3/4 cloud cover is possible i'd like to try.

Anyway it was real pretty up above the clouds, but the wind up there also pushed us further South than realised.

Fights below the clouds obviously didn't suit our Spads, so you'd think that i'd have been smarter when Larner and i engaged 2 Jasta 5 Albatros. But no, and i lost an 18 streak that's been going since mid-December. S! J5_Gamecock.

After that we got a J30 CL2, a DFW and chased a certain Green-tailed Alb into the clouds, later forcing him down. End of the session we ran into a high DFW recon with 2 escorts and they went home with extra ventilation.

Stream with Timestamps here.

Tough way for the streak to end @US103_Baer! But big salute on getting 18; that's not a small streak by any means! :)

Anyway, here is the (belated) Twitch stream of last Thursday's fly-in from the German perspective! College hit me like a ton of bricks with final papers for 2 separate classes...both due tonight. I had prepared for it as best I could, but it still took me out of social life for the last several days. Got the last one submitted tonight...whew!

Anyway, here's last Thursday's stream:

Thank-you to @CubanCoveRunner for the interesting map choices you continue to offer us twice a month! Between Wargrounds and your server, Thursday nights continue to be engaging! :salute:

I'll catch you guys on Wargrounds this Thursday! :)

Salute all! Had a lot of fun last night!

JG1 started by conducting patrols over the mud and enemy lines with inconclusive results. Unfortunately, the map ended a few minutes too early, as we were practically diving on the tails of several bandits! Ah well, C'est la vie. Another time, perhaps.  icon_mad.gif

Afterwards, the map rolled to Metz, so it was time to defend our targets! JG1 took off in Pfalz D.XIIs and encountered lots of action over our side of the lines, including a dramatic furball between SPADs, Se5as, a Handley Page, and ourselves.

Lots of fun and a big salute  icon_e_salute.gif to everyone who showed up last night!

Following Metz, JG1 switched over to Flying Circus to try out the brand spankin' new Dolphin and Fokker D.VII!

We will see you all again next week on Cuban's server!

Was a pretty hectic session alright. I spent a lot of time practicing my escape from being bounced :icon_e_wink:

The Lille - Early map is much disliked by us. Spad 150s and N17s are no fun against Alb D3s and Pfaltz D3s (or Gothas), especially up high and co-alt. Anyway..

Here's our stream, timestamps to action in the description.

https://youtu.be/uB1DungH1CA

Had a bit of fun in FC with JG1 trying the new planes. Conclusions to date, the Dolphin is nice to fly except at the edge of it's envelope, then it reverts to type. Will take a calm, experienced hand to get the best out of it. The DVII looks rather good. Able to hang nose-up, keeping wings level at very low speed. Also seems to take damage differently to the other German planes ie it's hard to shoot down unless you hit the engine.

For whatever reason, my livestream was really laggy due to network issues and I had to stop streaming after about 12 minutes. Since Baer was on holiday as well, this means no livestreams of last night's action. sad.png

Despite this, we had a lot of really awesome engagements last night! JG1 conducted multiple patrols, encountering the Brits behind their lines, within our lines, and everywhere in between!

they-were-everywhere.jpg

Of course the highlight of the night was a massive furball in no man's land. A simple bouncing of a 3 ship flight of Dolphins snowballed into a ginormous dogfight featuring 1 flight of Dolphins, 1 flight of Se5as, 1 flight of 103rd SPADs, and 2 flights of JG1 Pfalz D.XIIs. Took my hands a few minutes to quit shaking after that one!

See you all on Wargrounds next Thursday! icon_e_salute.gif
