Got back on Monday.

Central Africa is ludicrously hot (humidity), and this is coming from someone that lives in East Texas now where the humidity is unbearable at times. I developed swamp-ass, my feet were soaked through my boots, and I ruined a t-shirt, all of which occurred in under 2 hours of stepping off the plane. That aside, I've never seen a more beautiful and poverty stricken nation in my life. Met a few guys that have made it their mission to kill as many poachers as they can. Met a few guys that have made it their mission to kill as many Boko Haram as they can. Kinda makes my Western-led-life-bullshit-problems utterly pale in comparison. I'm already looking to go back, they really need help.

Good lord! Major Kudos to you Sir! Makes my minor political issues.... well... Minor. Still, I'm making sure to vote.

I still need feedback, gents. The spiral spinner itself has minimal blurring which is the exact opposite of what the developers utilized. I now know why they did what they did when they did it. Which was smart. My spinner looks great stationary but it doesn't look quite that way in motion, IMHO.

I loaded up the livery, launched a solo mission, climbed to altitude and panned the camera to a position off the nose and then just watched the screen, not necessarily focused on the spinner itself all the time, just the scene. I did so for about 5 minutes and within a few of that I immediately developed eye strain and a headache. Your eyes are naturally drawn to that part of the aircraft repeatedly due to in-motion dynamics, its just your brain doing its thing.

So, with regards to spinner feedback I need your help. Real help, help to determine if it its just me, something that you the players are also experiencing or a result of tech. Therefore I'd like you to place the aircraft in a similar position as the one depicted below and pan the external camera to a similar position and watch it for no less than 5 minutes. If you experience vision differentials, headaches, whatever, please let me know. You're not helping me improve the product if you don't provide feedback. And again, many thanks.

I should mention that I sent this livery to four mates via reddit and two of them experienced similar issues.

Hi Det,

I loaded a 4 x 4 quick mission with your test bed spinner and the default skin as wingman (had the opposition at 10 K alt and 10 K distance to avoid interference).

What I noticed is that both seem somewhat equally blurred at normal speed. Admittedly, I didn't go for a full 5 min (but when would we do that in reality when flying?). I had no issues with queasiness or anything like it after about 1 min with either one (I'm using a monitor - Acer X35 Predator curved). I haven't checked in VR.

The difference between yours and the default becomes more apparent when you slow the speed down... slight blurring at 1/2 speed (this is what I would like as default for the spiral spinners). At lesser speeds you can actually see the whole spiral layout. The default seems to be uniform in thickness as the spiral progresses from tip to base but yours varys quite a bit in thickness. Take a look at it from the side view at 1/4 or 1/8 speed to see what I'm talking about.

And BTW... has anyone noticed that the animation in the skin viewer seems to have the prop turning backwards? Am I hallucinating?

There are two things going on with the prop moving:

1. There is a misalignment where the prop blade terminates into the spinner. So you get the random black dot going around the inside of the spinner.

2. There is a black square also spinning around, this area should be white.

This also could be caused by lack of eye blinking and or staring at monitor frequency of 60 Hz for extended periods.

D9 JG 26 pack added.

It should be noted that this isn't entirely historical. I came across four photos featuring the same ribbon pattern and have applied the camo scheme across the entire pack. Said photos only depicted this pattern on three JG's across numerous aircraft. This was done for the sake of uniformity with regards to the aircraft when in use in a SP campaign, something I more often than not use in my own campaigns.

Shoot man, I'm trying to move to TX. WA is choking the life out of me for reasons that may ignite and argument in here. Which JG26 squad are you doing? I'm making the entirety of 7./JG26 with my new skin factory template I released. Great work on the skin.

That sucks, mate. I went to work for the defense industry right after leaving active duty and found it was a fairly unstable job sector, at least in my area of operations. Did you work in the commercial, military or both sides of the aviation house?

I was mainly an ME on the 787 Commercial Airlines at KPAE in the 56. I was in the Military too!   AC1 (AW/SW), USN, 1994 - 2010. I even have a design patent for a detail part I designed for the 787. I also worked the 777X, 767 and 747.

I did (on occasion do) PMC contracting so I never really got to see any of the aviation manufacturing side with regards to Lockheed. But I am a commercial aviation and simmer nut, so I'm always interested in the likes of the tube-liners, though I'm completely partial Airbus myself. If it's Boeing, I ain't going...😁

Job wise, if you're still looking that is, have you checked LM, Northrup, Bell, or Raytheon in Texas? The industry is booming here.

I was going back over some of my liveries and noticed a glaring issue. That issue being that some of them don't have alpha maps... The most recent PS update caused a major conflict with the new Nvidia Developer Tools where the alpha channel of a texture would be replaced with a completely transparent one, and this is evident in some of my most recent textures where they appear completely matte and missing a lot of details. Anyway, I've spent the last three plus hours fixing everything so they're good to go now and the difference is night and day.

If you previously downloaded any of the following liveries in the past then you'll need to re-download and overwrite when prompted.

  • Fw 190 D9 JG 26 Pack
  • Me 262 KG 51 Pack
  • Hurricane 302 Squadron Pack

The KG 51 Pack has also gone through a whole series of fixes with regards to some of the camo patterns, markings and just some much needed cleanup.

NAS 760 Fleet Air Arm added.

Interesting scheme. Seeing the others I'm now curious about the codes used though?

I was under the impression that in the Fleet Air Arm the system for codes was contrary to the Royal Air Force system. In the latter the position relative to the cockade indicating squadron code and aircraft code. But that in the Fleet Air Arm the codes were painted from left to right with the order being of importance rather than the position relative to the cockade. The codes that the Fleet Air Arm used can seem somewhat confusing as various changes were made through the war and was possible in the system for different units to have identical codes.

To start with the format for the code was letter number letter where these denoted carrier/base, squadron class, individual aircraft. From 1940 carrier squadrons were able to abandon the carrier letter though some continued to use them. From 1941 air stations with more than one non-operational squadron were able to modify the squadron class numbering system to suit local needs. From 1943 two letter combinations for some shore bases became introduced as there was more UK based air stations than available letters. Also from 1943 carrier based squadrons were being grouped as wings and though some continued to use the number letter codes many in escort carriers began to use combination of letter denoting the carrier plus individual aircraft letter. From 1944 fighter wings standardised on a letter number letter combination that denoted wing, squadron number within wing, individual aircraft. There were further changes made for those working up in the US and also other changes made in 1945.

So kind of confusing. And that said some squadrons ignored the system. Such as 736 Squadron that used AC as their squadron code (rather than the S# for St Merryn). And various squadrons resorted to using just aircraft codes and no more. But the constant in the codes that the Fleet Air Arm used was that they were painted painted left to right. The same order irrespective what side they are painted on.

See the source image

Armoured Aircraft Carriers

The Squadrons & Units Of The Fleet Arm (which I got most of the information written above from) gives the codes for 760 Squadron as being P7A+ from April 1940, then changing to individual letters from October the same year. Then K1A+ from 1944. And unknown when at Lee-On-Solent and Henstridge in 1945. Though there's also these online claiming to be 760 Squadron;

To cut a long story short I'm wondering whether your schemes should perhaps instead read W9A, W9B, W9C, W9D etc etc. And written as that on both sides. As to me yours look as though they are all aircraft D but from six different units. But feel free to ignore me whether or not you have source for the squadron appearing in that manner.

You're right. I pulled the codes from the FAA register not noticing the reg. continuance on the subsequent aircraft. Force of habit when doing RAF birds I spose'. Thanks for the heads up though as I'd have left them as is without it.

I was going to modify the Normal Map of the Spit Mk.Vb into a Seafire however it would have changed all of the Spitfires in my game. I would have added the wing fold hinges and arresting hook door lines.

Yeh looked into the same thing. Found was not feasible for the same reason. Also realised that would not look right (no crevasse or hook protruding aft of the fairing) either. I was just concerned with doing the Seafire Ib which is the Spitfire Vb modified to add arrester hook, slinging points and naval radio equipment (also some local strengthening). The Seafire IIc also was the Spitfire Vc similarly modified but also adding catapult spools (and some more strengthening). The folding wings were introduced on the Seafire III.
