Why We Fly What We Fly

Recommended Posts

On the discussion on "balanced servers", I noted how whereas in IL2, there is a definite LW bias in MP, in DCS it is toward the Allied aircraft. One explanation is simply two different communities, with each community having different numbers of folks who favor one particular a/c over the other. But then, this difference itself would need to be explained. Another explanation would be a nationalistic bias in which: US/UK > Luftwaffe > VVS. But is this really the case for most folks?

So I am curious as to what are the reasons your primary ride(s) is/are your primary ride(s)? No judgement, just curiosity. And, to keep things tight, how about a rule-of-thumb of max 144 characters per a/c?

I'll start the ball rolling ...

Yak 1BBalanced turn fighter that can take on an energy fight (to a point), forgiving to fly w/nice eng mgmt, strengths fit my style AND good-looking!

(Of course, things change over time --- and my favorite a/c to today was not the same as a several months ago, and I doubt it will stay the same several months from now, what with the Spit, Wildcat, and Zero, at least, on the horizon to choose from. But the above reflects my current preferences well enough).

I try to fly a fair bit for both sides and fly both ground attack and fighters (never had time to really get into level bombing)

My prefered rides are:

VVS:

Fighter: Yak-1b, for ease of piloting, well rounded capabilities and awesome cockpit view.

Ground attack: IL-2-1943, for its armour and the PTABs.

Luftwaffe:

Fighter: Fw 190A5, for its versatility, armament, low level performance, pleasant flying and because it takes more than half a brain to fly effectively unlike the 109. Best fighter in the sim IMHO.

Ground attack: Bf 110G2, for its awesome range of weaponry, high performance and maneuverability.

Secondary aircraft:

MiG-3:

Pro: Full of character, great challenge to fly, most beautiful aircraft ever designed.

Con: Can't land it properly.

Bf 109E7:

Pro: Quite fun to fly, easy piloting, more character than other 109s.

Con: Horrible cockpit view, it's a 109.

Pe-2 s.110:

Pro: great cockpit view, good survivability, acceptable performance, good maneuverability.

Con: Useless offensive guns, limited armament options, mediocre bomb load.

P-40E:

Pro: Best bomber killer in the sim, acceptable at ground attack.

Con: Bad at everything else.

I carry my love for flying the Fw190 over to the VVS side by flying the La-5. Similar characteristics to a point. Both have excellent handling at speed compared to others. Each excel when I use my dive to pounce and gain energy back with a zoom climb, and both do rolling scissors well when you get into knife fighting situations.(The FW more so, but the La-5 does really well with more rudder input in its current state). Both have really hard hitting armament so it's likely that you will see results relatively quickly after connecting a shot.

Between the two, I will take the Fw190 over the La-5.

I fly for whoever's outnumbered and generally take whatever aircraft I think will have the biggest impact on the battle at that point.

Haven't seriously flown for Axis in months so can't speak on my fav's for that side but on VVS it's the Yak 1B for it's bubble pit and any of the IL-2's because they make great loitering ground pounders.

If it has wings I'll fly it, but I must admit I tend to favour the LW. There are a few reasons - one is simply subjective aesthetics (The 110 is so pretty!). One is that the LW has access to proper bombers, as well as some wonderful ground pounders. I expect I will fly quite a bit more for the reds once the A20 hits. Lastly, it's a matter of where I grew up - in western Europe in general, we learn and hear of and see the remnants of the war in the west, British and American and German planes. These days I know a fair bit about the eastern front, but when I was young, not so much. There were toys and books and movies about US/UK/GER planes, not Russian. This might not seem like a relevant reason but the result was that planes from these nations were the ones I grew up idolizing and dreaming about. Even as an adult, the Russian planes simply do not evoke much passion in me, at least not on that base, childish level.

As for favourite planes -

VVS: Hands down the I-16, it's just so different and exciting to fly. Very personal, and although bite-sized, it packs a punch. As an old hand at RoF, I also find I feel rather at home with an open cockpit.
LW: More difficult to pick - I love the 110 and the Macchi for their versatility and looks, and the Heinkel for its gentle nature and ruggedness. I think overall, and looking at my flight hours, it'd be unfair not to give the title to the Stuka. Again, for versatility, ease of use and dependability - but for joyrides there is just no plane that is more pleasant to fly than the Fw190A5.

The Bf-109, because it's fast, well armed, can be used for ground attack, and I'm familiar with it.

Definetely the I-16. For me it's more than a plane, it's an icon itself. Look at these beauties:

LW: Bf 110, especially the G-2. nothing more fun to see thanks and planes go pop when they're hit by 37mm shells
VVS: P-40. it's quite fast and has some nice options for ground attack ordinance.

LW: Bf-110 (Wished we had the F version. Would be a perfect fit for Stalingrad), Fw-190. Both extremely nice to fly and well rounded attack planes.

VVS: Il-2. Great ground attack aircraft. Just a magic feeling to make multiple passes at a enemy position and hear all the 20mm shells exploding on your plane, and most of the time still be able to get back alive and well.

Pe-2 for my low level bombing. I like to ninja my way in and out without getting intercepted, and the peshka has enough speed and a bombload to make it worthwhile. Nice view too.

I-16 for most other things. It can turn, which is what I enjoy most in an aeroplane.

LaGG... because sometimes I like the feeling of being a cripple with a very big gun.

Ju-52 for the pure fun of pulling off a heist. Catch me if you can!

I like and Fly all, but P-40 is currently my Favourite, and  Ju-52, and Ju-87, and Ju-88, and all Il-2s, and I-16. And La-5, and LaGG-3 and 109E, and Bf110s and He-111 and all the others as well.

But at least According to DED Random Expert P-40, Pe-2-35, Il-2-41, Ju-87, Ju-88 and Bf-110.

I fly both Soviet and German aircraft.

I enjoy any 110, the E-7, La-5, Pe-2 35 for level bombing, and Pe-2 87 for dive bombing.

Everyone enjoys a 190.

I fly whatever side is outnumbered....which is mostly Soviets.

I fly mostly Soviet because the German Teams anger me too much.

The P-40 is my favourite Bird because it basically is a single Engine Bf-110. It's just an overall enjoyable Aircraft, flies straight and true and can Carry as much as an Il-2 but at a higher Speed and still Tank Damage like no other.

It can't compete as a fighter, but a cocky 109 will not survive my 50s for very long.

I also fly the Il-2 for Tank Busting sometimes and it's a lot of fun as well.

I-16 is fun as well, especially in the first couple Periods of Random Expert against the 109Es. But after that I use it mostly in Ground Attack.

Ju-52 is just fun to fly below Tree Top Level to get to the Dropzones unseen and then disappear again. Hope Crusader gives us some more Diverse Missions for it at some Point.

Ju-87 is my Go-To Machine on the German Side. It's better defended than the 110 and Survives rather well.

Ju-88 is just amazing All-Round. 450 at Sea Level with 1.5 Tons of Bombs is just godly.

He-111H-16 is a good Level Bomber.

Bf109E with Armor and Bombs is like a Mini Il-2

Bf110s are great Alllrounders as well.

I will like the BoK Aircraft as well, can't wait for A-20.

I used to fly LW in IL2 back in the day but in IL2 BoX I decided to take on the role of the underdog and although I am and always will be a below par pilot, Im having a blast playing with the allied planes.

Also, the lend lease planes *work* for me as the cockpits are in english :)

I also prefer the 30's styling of the allied planes.

The LW bombers are sexy though.

My fave rides atm are

P40 (horrid to fly at the moment though)

Yak 1 (both versions, love the look of the series 69 but the uglier 1b is a superior plane.)

and the sexy i16 as it's the closest i can get to a bi plane.

I fly mainly VVS and I quite like my Yak 1(b if it's available). It feels very easy to fly and is generally rather forgiving to fly. For ground pounding I can never give up my Pe2. Both of them handle very well and are quite versatile. On that note I wish we had a Pe3.

FW 190 - Loves speed, dives well, strong weapons, roll rate, cockpit visibility. Suits my style: BnZ, energy fighting. Iconic & great looking.

Also like the US planes (P-51, P-47, P-38) for similar reasons.

New to this sim ( 2-3 months ) but a long-time IL2 / IL2 1946 flyer.

There's no plane I don't enjoy flying but I'm smitten by the MiG-3. While I do like its sleek "racing plane" looks, what I really like is using its speed and rate of roll to good effect. Yes it can be tricky handling but I don't use it as a knife fighter. It's a "hot" airplane, so fly it as such. It's got a clear and easy to read instrument panel, and cockpit visibility is much better than would appear from the outside appearance. While equipping it with the 2 available Shvak cannon is fun and an occasional guilty pleasure, I most often fly with the standard UB/shkas weaponry and like the challenge of downing aircraft, even bombers with it. It's more formidable armament in practice than on paper.

P-40 with 45% fuel and four machineguns becomes fairly decent as a fighter and surprises the unsuspecting 109.

I try to keep sides even, so I will readily fly for either team...

VVS:  I love the I-16..  Especially since I fly with the Rift..!!  OMG

If the Rata is not available, I like the Yak 1B.

No Yaks 1B..?  I climb into the LA-5 and sometimes the Mig.

LW:   Give me the Fock Wolf A5 or A3.

When I'm feeling nostalgic, and I know there are Ratas to be found, I strap into the E-7..  :)

Once the Spitties drop though, everything I have said thus far will no longer even be relevant.  ;)

While I am at it, if any of you folks are on the fence about VR...

Just get it.

You'll never look back..

(partly because it is so much more dang difficult than with TrackIR..)   lol

VVS: Pe-2 S.87, jack of all trades really, esp with the level bombing capability. Small bomb-load is a bummer though.

LW: Bf-110E2, can surprise an unwary opponent esp when in a group, watch out! Good bomb-load and gun armament. Beautiful pit. I have not flown the Bf-110G2 model very much but am sure it's very much better by all accounts.

I just love twin-engine aircraft in general so I like the He-111 and Ju-88 as well.

I like the LAGG 3 , IL 2 and PE 2, I hope I will like the HS 129, a aircraft the developers should be able to simulate pretty accurate based on my experience on the 3 I mentioned. And please let the A 20 be a masterpiece.

But I choose VVS because I cannot get myself to fly LW when they are 3 times more than VVS , I would like to fly Stuka more, and maybe try out the JU 88

I fly the La-5 the most but since the arrival of the Yak-1b I like this nimble plane.

For me the Mig-3 and the La-5 are in need of a little correction in view of their take off caracteristics.

Otherwise the P-40 is the most difficult to master due to his engine mangement! I always fly in expert mode that is.

All twin engines planes have for me lost all interest since COD and ROF.  :salute:

Mate... Jump in a Ju88. Take off. Climb to altitude. Trim her out. Start to ramp up the speed. Start pushing it. Start touching 440-450 IAS with your (inevitably patronising fighter-boy) escort starting to complain they're overheating keeping up... Then dive on a "Warehouse" or railhead or artillary position and empty 44 bombs on their position...

My friend, you're missing out! You're simply depriving yourself!

(By the way, yes the Pe2 is "beautiful" or "fast" or "effective".  But it throws you a vicious ground loop. Instead of that vindictiveness, the Ju is different. The Ju88 loves you back.)

Of course I don't mention the Ju52, which is on a different plane. How could I? How dare I?

You don't choose the Tante.

The Tante chooses you.

BF109G2 - Love the cockpit layout (even the thick bars) and the look of the aircraft.

Being almost a 100% VVS pilot during the original IL2 (Lagg was my early favorite) and switching to US/UK planes when they became available in that series, I decided this time round I would make the switch to Luftwaffe and focus/learn more about how to fly and fight to the strengths of the Luftwaffe planes that I had spent years dog fighting against over a decade earlier.

The He-111, H6 or H16 because, well its a great looking bomber. I don't like the cockpit view in the JU-88. I'll fly the JU-87 as well. Its just fun.

On the VVS side the Lagg 3 because "I think I can!" even if it can't. :)  And the Pe-2 for all the reasons people listed above. Just an all around awesome airplane.

No judgement

A thread of no judgment, hmm?

... and because it takes more than half a brain to fly effectively unlike the 109 ...

That didn't take long.

I get that it's fashionable on here to hate on the 109 and the people who like to fly it, but boy, the constant "hurr durr if u fly 109 u r stupid and an asshole" on here is getting really old.

That is hardly fair given what Fink actually typed - which doesn't resemble your response in the least. He goes on to list a few 109's to boot.

I fly the bf109E7 for the most part if I'm on LW.  Too slow to run from or out climb the Yak.....so VVS pilots have no excuses when we turn fight.

On the VVS side, it's usually the Yak or I16, tho' the LaGG is fun at times.

Go away, troll.

I think you should reconsider how you give yourself permission to behave when you post here.

I doubt you act this way in real life - at least I hope not.

Seriously? Was that even remotely close to what I said?

The very fact that the 109s are super easy to fly in combat makes it a GOOD fighter, not a bad one, and it by no means negates the skill of the pilot. A poor 109 pilot will be killed over and over again (albeit less than he would be flying a LaGG) while a good 109 pilot can be virtually unstoppable.

Personally I have little interest in the 109 (save for the Emil) - kinda grew tired of it in IL2-1946 - but no judgement on people who fly it.
