Game version 2.002 discussion: HTC VIVE, Ranks, New vehicles

Recommended Posts

I tested a Il-2 ground support mission and noticed this 23. Artillery positions in the campaign mode became more varied;

These small adjustments make things a lot more realistic and interesting. I have been so far very pleased with the improvements made to the missions. And the rank system is much better than the old one.

I flew one more Il-2 mission last night. Both were successful with full scores, landings and all. My flight lost only 1 Sturmovik on two missions to AA.

Same here, I've been having a blast with these new missions. The campaign really feels fresher now, and also I noticed that player actions have a more decisive impact on the outcome which is very fun. Making the right decisions is rewarded well, but mistakes are costly too.

Case in point, my first mission after the patch was an I-16 train hunt, flight of four plus some P-40Es. On the way to target we came across four Bf-109Es carrying bombs and being escorted by two Bf-109F-2s. We didn't see each other until the last minute, so 100m away from me our formations crossed and the Emils only saw us and engaged after I opened fire into one of the crossing aircraft. A chaotic fight started, but my I-16s were still flying straight and holding formation... I figured I could either go get the train and let the escort die, or turn around and accept the challenge. I went for the second out of principle, so the four I-16s pulled an Immelmann and started engaging. There were too many Germans however and bit by bit we were overwhelmed. Aircraft from both sides were falling out like flies - a vivid image was looking as a Bf-109E passed by me, a P-40 exploded into the ground and seconds later a Bf-109 also fell from the skies in flames and sparkled a huge fireball in the woods. Eventually I suffered the same fate, after being heavily wounded and sent into a spin.

Later in another I-16 ground attack mission (2 + 4 escort) we came across some Bf-109Fs. Having learned my lesson, my pair flew right by them as the escort held them back. As we approached the artillery position we were bombing, I saw a flight of Bf-109Fs patrolling it so I went right through the clouds and climbed to 1500m. That would give me a chance to dive bomb, climb up and dive again before being engaged. The plan went well, and in three passes the artillery was gone. However, the previous group of Bf-109F-4s had followed us here apparently and now a 6 x 2 battle started. My wingman unfortunately was shot down, but I managed to hide into the clouds as an F-4 closed in and as he dove out of the cloud in a split-S I turned around and went right after him, nailing the bastard with a good 20mm burst from up close as he levelled out. Initially he looked fine (prompting me to think 'what the...!') and then I saw some radiator fluid leaking. Two seconds later his wing bent into two and that was the last I saw of him. Turning hard east again, one more Bf-109 came close to shooting me down but I evaded his attack and went cloud-hopping all the way home. Arriving at Klin I did a low pass and a roll, before landing successfully.

In other words, in the same aircraft, I won a 2 x 6 Friedrich by making the right moves, but I lost a 6 x 6 with 4 Emil and 2 Friedrich through stupidity - namely accepting a furball.

On the Pe-2 I took too long to bomb the enemy fighters taking off then took even longer strafing parked Junkers so I ended up with six Bf-109Fs chasing me with the gunners going crazy and me dodging trees until one engine quit and we went in, surviving the crash though. It was exciting to look back and see all those crosses coming right at you and doing low altitude rolls in the Peshka to shake them off.

Update 2.002b

Dear players,

We just released a minor fix improving a number of things which is based on your feedback for update 2.002. Most of the improvements are for HTC Vive: realistic cockpit size, better motion blur (it can be turned on and off by 'Cinematic camera' parameter in the game settings), open and close sights for aircraft and tank turrets (aim with right eye), improved head tracking, especially in a tank.

VIVE_Loft_01.jpg

Changes:

1. Several missing awards are visible again in player profile;
2. HTC Vive improvements listed above. Please note that joystick is recommended for VR mode since mouse controls interfere with head tracking on aircraft;
3. Sky appearance improved at Ultra graphics setting (no more color banding);
4. Oil barrels removed from taxi ways on Tacinskaya airfield;
5. An issue of asynchronous power during engine start fixed for twin engine aircraft.

Ah....I know exactly what you mean Lucas.  After nailing the choo-choo, we were jumped by a whole gaggle of '109's.  Chaos ensued.

Nice video, it was exactly like that indeed :biggrin:

I like the dynamic of the Battle of Moscow aircraft, the I-16 has nothing going for it in terms of level speed but in roll, climb and turn performance it's a world beater.

So gave the VR functionality another try today.  Set or_enable = 1

Launch game, If steamvr isnt running when i launch the game, It just ends up loading the game normally.

If steamvr IS running when i launch the game, It boots up in SBS mode but instead of going to the headset, I get SBS mode on my desktop.  No headtracking, nothing.

Downloading at a stunning 0/s... Is there an issue on the update server right now?

Edit : Went outside with the pug and when I came back it was done...
Good job on those patches!

Vive is working for me today after turning direct mode off.

I realize that this is an early version of the vr support but I might as well give feedback on the issues I'm sure you are already aware of.

- Menu's are awkward to navigate and hard to look at since they are locked into your face, need to change them to work as other vr games do where you can look around still.

- Loading screen pictures give you cross-eyed effect where you pretty much need to close one eye otherwise it hurts your brain.

- I get some of the above mentioned cross-eyed effect in cockpit which worries me the most. I feel like the movement in the cockpit and scale are pretty good and give the feeling of being inside it but the cross eyed effect makes seeing things harder.

- Not sure if there is a way to recenter where the vive thinks front should be such as trackIR, i just restarted the game with my vive facing the right way to align it.

Altogether I'm really excited for this but right now it's somewhat cumbersome, this game is so close to taking over my life permanently though.

There is a special command 'Default VR view' binded to F12 by default.

As for cross-eyed effect you're getting, have you adjusted inter-pupil distance on the headset? I suppose you did, then it's rather strange since no one here complained about such issue on our Vive.

'No more sky banding (when on ultra')?!

Is this for everyone, not just the VR thing,... if so that is great news!

(Can't get to Pc to check it out at the moment.)

It`s for everyone with ultra settings.

Looks great!

Work with the Vive ! YES !

But :

  • Very tricky (go to dev tab, change on Direct Mode, screen start to blink... Ok why not) but it's work !
  • Menu are very hard for now because it's "static" so when your move your head, the menu move with you, it's impossible to see texts in corners.
  • And the worst for me : LAG ! In the cockpit when I move, I've 0.5 second between when I move and when the camera move. Impossible to stay more than 3 second in the cockpit. Maybe my settings are too hight (work on ultra with solid 60 fps in 1080p on a normal screen). I'll re-try another time.

Anyway : good job devs ! :D

Anyone else not getting anything when disabling direct mode?  I click the button and nothing happens.  I tried closing steamvr anyway and starting IL2 and it brings up steamvr but does not work, and in the settings direct mode is still active.

If you are using the Oculus rift CV1, its sdk is set for direct mode and will not allow you to diable direct mode and use the extended mode possible with the VIVE.  I was able to somehow break the steamvr beta and get the CV1 into extended mode and see it as a 2nd monitor in the nvidia control panel.  I set the oculus rift as primary monitor and by some cross eyed method got the game to launch.  My head tracking was not working so no looking around, but I was able to get into the cockpit and fly around in a quick mission without any AI and it was pretty smooth using Ultra and 2XAA settings.  The only major thing was that the gunsight reticle was not aligned so it appeared crossed into itself. I really hope Sneaksie can get the direct mode to work so the Oculus can be supported.

In my case, it is the HTC Vive not the rift.

Wow. That was an impressive explosion. You can see the actual connection of the aircraft as one flipped a nano-second before the huge explosion. Not seen that before in any of my flights.

How exactly are you doing that? I have never seen the CV1 as a monitor in the nvidia control panel. I always assumed that was possible with DK1 and DK2 only.

must have an option to disable direct mode for OR as well, debug tool maybe?

so far for vive it's a bit finicky getting the game to actually display in the headset.  Will need to mess with video settings too, whatever settings it was on felt like ~ 30 FPS. Will test more later tonight.   I remain hopeful, AC is amazing in VR, so it is possible to retro-fit support onto a fairly demanding title created before any real practical vr discussion and still get excellent results.

for recentering the view in vr (vive) numpad 5 does the trick for me, f12 does not work,

only problem i have now is I cant look around, looking down/up and rotating the head on the z - axis does work, joystick input is enabled, works great with throttle and rudder pedals, mouse deactivated

As a DCS user I would never use keyboard.  All of the functions for flight are on HOTAS.  X52 Pro has a lot of controls and those controls can be switched to 3 different functions via the mode wheel.Fe

Feathers can you describe how to do that? I have an X52 Pro and would like to try it? Must you use the Saitek software to emulate key presses? I find that unstable and awkward to configure.

Albino

F12 is the default command for TrackIR to re-center, is there a way to disable the VR command? I can't find it to remap it in the Key Mapping. Now TIR won't re-center.

I suppose I can just reassign that key in Naturalpoint

It's not so easy to find another key though since there are so many used in these sims. Can you make the F12 VR control mappable so we can reassign it if needed?

Gents,

Could you please resolve the rear gunner sticking again please in a quick fix patch please?  The bug was raised on the errors/bug forum, but I thought I would just raise it here as well as not many players actually use the rear gunner and I thought that it might get over-looked over all of the other excitement

Thank you

For people with the Vive and who can't make it work, do you follow step by step this instructions ?

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=713397265

It work for me and I'm pretty unlucky with computers in general so...

But it's not good for now : menu problem, lag on the traking in the cockpit, and maybe other problems than we need to report for the dev.

But I'm a believer, it's going in the right way ! And when it will work perfectly, I could say goodbye War Thunder !

Just updated and when I tried to launch the game I got this:

The program can't start libcurl64.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem

Any ideas?
