DOH!

Your right I did forget about that one.. It was one of the first jet sims I actully liked! That and it was one of the first PC flight sims to impliment a full 6DOF FM!

box.jpg

If I remeber correctly, the SSI group that made that sim went on to become something else.. I want to say they had something to do with LockOn but not sure

Eitherway thanks for the heads up! I can't belive I forgot that one

Currently just Il-2 '46 stock and UP (out of date I think), CloD and RoF - though really only RoF gets much use. I keep meaning to start another career in stock '46, on the Slot map with the improved AI - I'll probably leave it for the next TD patch though, as it'll hopefully be along soon.. At some point I'll have to try CloD out properly online too - I think it is only the steep learning curve, and the knowledge that I'll be easy meat to the experten that has held me back so far. Then again, I don't do much better in RoF.

Surprised no one has mentioned Tornado by digital intergration, this game had the best truely dynamic campaign ever in a flight sim even up to today.  I'm surprised there havnt been any better dynamic campaigns since (falcon 4 came close).

Strangely I've never even heard "Tornado" mentioned before.

So how many of those top sim companies ar still alive today ? I guess not so many.

I also remember Jane WW2 Fighters being the first real good looking one on the market with gorgeous cockpits. And I remember an interview with those guys who

were working on the next "generation" with better everything...And then ...nothing...Gone....Stange things happen...

That was the main reason I asked the question - my answer from this thread was basically that everbody buys/bought all of it! So what kind of numbers does it take to be viable!? If I'm reading it right the 1C forum has like 60 thousand members, SAS has like 20K - I couldn't find totals for SIM HQ and ROF, but they've got to be comparible if not bigger, not to mention western Europe, Russian forums etc. Now I know there's a lot of member crossover but it seems like a pretty big audience (to me). I'm dying to know what kind of sales it takes to be profitable.

What it shows, is that the traditionnal business system , like buying the game for $50 and then wait for free updates , is obviously not economicaly viable. Even Microsoft got out....

So probably ROF and WT model is more suitable for a long term profitable niche market like sims....

To those who don't like to pay for upgrades and additionnal planes / options /whatever, well, look at those lists....

60K members or sold copy's is nothing compaired to the sales numbers of Call of Duty and Battlefield. I guess 60K is just not enough. Currently there's are petition going for GTA5 because Rockstar does not want to bring it to the PC market. I think that explains a lot.

That's how it all starts..

Or at least that is how it all use to start prior to the PC!

Back in the 60s we use to build models and than run around the back yard making the zoom zoom rat-a-tat-tat-tat sounds..

In a way I kind of feel sorry for the kids today who never used their hands and went zoom zoom..

In that they are not exercising the best sim of all.. Imagination! ;)

IL2 - 1946 :

4.09 fully custom modded (90% playing time)

HSFX 6.17 custom modded - waiting for  Asura's  modded Dgen to give it a full spin

4.11 vanilla (just as future mod installations starter)

4.10 - DBW 1916 - curious what vpmedia and co. can make of this ( so far looks promising )

Wings of Prey - pure  fun

European Air War  fully modded - still the best offline playing experience (IMHO) ... too bad it's lost Nvidia drivers support

They have upgraded it quite extensively and continue to upgrade it. It will play on newer systems now.

Hey - I fogot to ask - you can't play Mig Alley on any current system can you?

According to this thread you can play it using WIndows 7.

Man I have so little...

Il-2 1946

Il-2 Cliffs of Dover (though I need a better machine to play it...)

Wings Over Vietnam

I had the free version of Rise of Flight for a while, and I tried out the DCS World - both of which would require a better machine... (sense a trend XD)

Hi all,

Going back some time:

Spitfire Zombies (Great maps! Rowan?).

Mustangs Over Mars (Grafix to die for!).

Double Jugs (P-47s skimming the decks).

Bristols Aloft (Exploits of the famous Bristol F2b Fighter WW1. Slightly dated now, but ok on older machines).

Avros and Beyond (The many Avro varients in their natural habitat, the sky. A challenge and a joy. Highly recommended).

Some impressive lists.

I flew a few back in teh past, then took a few years off flight simming, came back recently.

Currently installed (play time varied)

ROF - main title since discovering it a couple of months back.

CLOD- More I fly it, the more I like it now it runs on my system as a reasonable compromise between bling and performance.

Il2 - 2 installs, one with DBW and the other with HSFX - All time fave, still play anything up to 10 hours a week. Best sim ever.

DCS - Basic World and A-10, however i am only learing the Hog and havent fired a shot in anger yet. Love the Frogfoot though, simple, deadly, ugly as a hatful.

DCS Blackshark v1 - Not bought the upgrade yet, to be honest I am hopeless at it.

LockOn + FC1 + FC2 will get FC3. Fly mainly the Russian jets due to simpler avionics

Falcon 4 AF**

Falcon 4 BMS**

Open Falcon**

Free Falcon** (Viper)

**I am no good at modern ultra technical aircraft, so no idea why i have 4 version of the one game installed when i can barely shoot things with it lol. I am determined to learn however when I get time so have them hanging about.

MFSX - with addons

Strike fighters 2 + all ex pacs - simple, moddable and great for some instant gratification. Siim light yes but I enjoy the eras represented.

As you can see, the bulk of my gaming library these days are flight sims, then add about as many racing sims to that list lol. I'm a big Iracing particpant.

in the past I have tried:

CFS all versions

Flanker 2

Rowans BoB

Di's Hind

DI's Apache

Jane's Longbow

Janes F-18 (I think it was a Jane's title)

EF2000

First Eagles

tinkerd with WWIIOnline as a pilot.

MFS9

MFS2004

Flight Gear

Xplane

Warbirds

Have Warthunder half installed, but to be honest I really don't care and have little time for playing it.

Also dabble in some sci fi stuff, such as the X and Evochron series.

I have found, while my first love is the IL2 series and ww2 stuff, I have learnt more about flying and found it is probably more suited to my flying style in ROF. As a confirmed ground pounder I never really did much dogfighting till I started ROF and have learnt alot, which I am slowly converting to the ww2 machines flying around in the 109's in CLOD and 46.

Having spent my gaming budget int eh past on racing peripherals I really suffer for decent flight controls. Need a throttle  badly. Least I got TrackIR for xmas :)
