Are you tired of lone-wolfing, or flying your single bomber while being hunted down by twelve Messers?

Welcome to the 216th Mixed Aviation Division (216 SAD)!
The 216 SAD is a combined initiative to unite and coordinate the Soviet fighter, bomber and attack aviation. This Division is based not on membership but on action: anybody who wants to escort Soviet bombers, or fly bombers with fighter escort, is part of this initiative.

There are no applications, no entry barriers and no strict commitments beyond mutual respect and friendliness.

Our goals are:
  • To ensure the completion of mission objectives
  • To improve bomber success and survivability
  • To employ competitive fighter organisation
  • To maintain a relaxed community of pilots ready to help each other
How can you participate?
Fly, fight, and help pilots complete their missions.
Be available on TeamSpeak when you fly. We recommend adding "216/x" to your TeamSpeak nickname to show you are willing to cooperate with any pilot.
Through TeamSpeak and the in-game chat, coordinate your flights with fellow pilots to achieve better results.

Fighter pilots
Form pairs and flights for better results
Escort friendly bombers
Protect friendly ground assets and airbases
Fly sweeps to clear the air ahead of bomber/attack aviation
Attack enemy ground targets, both individually and in support of bombers (e.g. clear AAA)
Perform reconnaissance flights as needed, and transmit findings to other pilots

Bomber/attack pilots
Form pairs and flights for better results
Request escort for improved survivability
Execute coordinated attacks
Support ground assets and armour as needed during offensive and defensive operations

The 216th Mixed Aviation Division flies on multiple servers across time zones, and participates in weekly events. Anybody, including entire squadrons and their members, can commit to its principles.

Come fly with us, and deliver a crushing blow for the Soviet Air Forces.

Ahead, and westwards!

Since this is obviously a living breathing active BOS group flying VVS  I like to attend. I can only be active while at home, I work 2 weeks on and have two weeks free. during Winter and 3 / 3 summertime. I fly COD with another group, And I hope that is irrelevant.

I enjoy flying PE 2 Level bombing and IL 2´s

Welcome to the 216, Luse :)

Who you fly with or how often you can fly doesn't matter - as long as you bring the bombs, we bring the fighters to help you!

Good luck with the new job Rekt, whenever time allows you are always welcome to fly with us :)

Pod and Coconut, looking forward to flying with you again!

Neun, Beazil, Jizzo and Uwe, thank you very much for the support!

EDIT: A couple of reminders, whomever is looking for a dedicated fighter group experience can participate in 55 IAP (more under the spoiler tag in the main post). Also, while I created the thread there are other important people in the process. Some but not all of them are Myrio who worked as hard if not harder than me to get 216 SAD and 55 IAP into shape; Manu and the nice folks at 4./JG52 who have been providing all kinds of support in the process; Coconut for making the technical side happen and also for leading a swift and deadly attack on the Bf-110s last Wednesday; and LuseKofte and Silas for providing valuable consulting from the bomber side of things. Big thanks!

Right on Lucas.  The more organized resistance we have to fight against the better it is for all parties involved.  A strong VVS makes for a strong Luftwaffe - or total domination ;)

Regardless, I love the inclusive approach.  One thing games like this miss are the opportunities to fly on TS with a group of like minded individuals.  We obviously need to have individuals group together to communicate on TeamSpeak.  In other games I've played we have a master server that caters to all parties of a particular side (axis or allies) and it works particularly well.  Without that sort of "hand holding" playerbases depend on people like you to accomplish the same thing.  Both sides benefit.

Besides, what are we Luftwaffe pilots to do when we want to "vacation" with the other side?

Salute!

Actually, 216 division was fighter division from may 1942 to 13.12.42 (then from december 1942 to june 1943 - 216sad, and then - 9 Guards IAD). But on 5.7.42 55iap became 16giap, so 55iap formally was not a part of 216sad.

55iap on 22.6.41, article of Mikhail Timin. A must read.

http://forum.aviaski...read.php?t=3677

Exellent book of V.Karpovich "Fighting in I-16 and MiG-3", about early war story of 55iap.

http://militera.lib....h_vp/index.html

And interesting article of M.Bykov, "Unclear sky of 1941" about conflict between two great aces - top VVS ace G.Rechkalov and A.Pokryshkin.

Great choice mate! 55iap was I-16 and MiG-3 regiment, and got Yak-1 only after re-designation in 16giap.

A real BoM squad :)

Thanks a lot for the support and the valuable information, Panzerbar! Currently we are flying the LaGG-3 most of the time, mostly based on the recent online campaign experiences that formed the regiment, but once Battle of Moscow shows up in force things will obviously change. Above all, a working engine and a full load of ammunition is all we need

Welcome, Peterla! It's great to have such a skilled ground-attack pilot aboard, thanks for leading the Il-2 flight yesterday by the way.

The Division is holding its first open event this Wednesday, at 19:00 GMT. You can read more here.

Every week, 55 IAP plus 216 SAD will perform a short mission in partnership with 4./JG 52. The format is as follows:

The sides take turns in executing offensive and defensive missions. The next mission will have 4./JG 52 and friends attacking, and 55 IAP plus volunteer pilots from 216 SAD intercepting. The week after this one, 55 IAP and 216 SAD will respectively fly escort and bombing missions against 4./JG 52 interception.

The following steps are taken:

1. Briefing of 5 min on TeamSpeak
2.Take-off and RV point if necessary.
3.Action Objective
4.No landing
5.De-Brief 2-3 min each side
6.De-Brief 5-10min together

The purpose of this training is to learn good practices of flying and coordination under different circumstances, and to push cooperation between units forwards. While we are enemies in the skies, we are also friends once the missions are over so it is important to cultivate a friendly atmosphere!

This is also a great opportunity for anyone who wants to try out flying with 216 SAD or 55 IAP, to see if this is what you are looking for. All pilots are welcome to join, just make sure to drop a message here or at this thread to make sure you get the server and TeamSpeak passwords sent to you.

I do, it is a wonderful aircraft once you get past the rough edges! The default armament is powerful, additional options are outstanding. It can deliver 200kg of bombs or eight 82mm rockets. It is very steady and smooth to handle when you know how to avoid certain traps, but it will also react swiftly when you need it to. On top of that it can take fire and go home safely.

In other words, the LaGG-3 is that loyal friend who is down for any mission and doesn't leave you even when things get rough. I cannot recall needing to parachute from one because it always either took me home or allowed me to ditch safely :)

The main reason for me flying PE 2 and IL 2 is the feel of realistic flight compared to what I have read, the feel of weight in movement. The LAGG had this feel when I first flew it at Alpha stage. The LAGG was my first love, problem with the LAGG is my ability to stay alive and do something with it.

The German bombers can obliterate any target with their big bombs, but to me the Russian planes give a more realistic feel to it. In cod I fly German bombers.

I wish I was good at flying the LAGG, I just do not have the strategic mind

In terms of handling I must say the Pe-2 is out of this world - it's such an angel in the air, on the ground, and it's pretty fast and manoeuvrable. The Il-2 is an aircraft I fly whenever needed and which I love to death but I don't have the nerves for it, specifically for that signature high AoA pull at 30m when finishing an attack.

Here's a proposal: whenever time allows, I can teach you what I know about the effective use of the LaGG-3, and you teach me the secrets of Pe-2 and Il-2 attacks

Flying the PE 2 is really nothing more than learning to land it and navigating. I get exited when I manage to make a IP to a target and level bomb it at a non GPS server. That is the ultimate navigation price. You cannot level bomb a target if you are off course with just a little bit.

My frustration on non GPS servers on a IL 2 is the fact I bring the wrong ammo, at DED server you really never know what target you will find and the trick is patience. You will not kill a tank on one pass with mixed HE and AP rounds , it take 3 passes minimum and then you are good at it.

The fact that a simple JU 87 brings a lethal threat to it does not make your life easier. The 41 mod IL 2 make life so much easier , in fact I hesitate to use it. It feels like a cheat. Firing rockets with it is easy, for some reason rocket are no longer in accurate, dogfight in it is easy if your opponent does not use speed as a part of it.

I will take you up on the LAGG flight tho, I would really love to make a effort in a LAGG.

Hi Lucas. I'd like to join the 216th if I may. I flew the last few FNBFs with you guys and really enjoyed it, and since 242 Squadron has finally called it a day I'm allowed a change of name! ;)

Anything VVS that carries bombs and I'll try my best.

Cheers, Cat. :salute:

Luse, on DED I usually settle for taking general purpose bombs and if need be some rockets. These can work out most targets, and if they don't I run back home and rearm. A lot of times it is easier to transmit target information to somebody else and go look for a new target.

Cat, welcome to the 216th! Bring in the bombs

You'll have to tell me the secrets of hitting things with rockets. So far I have only managed to hit the ground, and even that can be challenging sometimes.

Coconut, while I am a GP bomb apologist the rockets usually work for targets like airbases, forts, artillery positions and the like. Against human-driven tanks they seem to have a psychological effect too. Most of the time my aim is terrible so I unload four or all of them in a salvo then break off. In these target-rich environments at least half will hit something, even if not what you wanted to hit.

This Wednesday for Coconut's Training Coop (can we call it that? ) 55 IAP and the 216th Mixed Aviation Division are taking one flight or more for interception training. So far we have two pilots confirmed, and the more the merrier!

Anyone from any unit or free-standing is welcome to join. It will be a fun short practice mission, similar to a game of aerial chess between us and the escorts. :)

And for that matter, any full unit can also participate in the 216th initiative - it's all about helping each other.

P3zman, practice times and such will be adapted as needed as the roster grows, and there may be other training days/times later. Currently most of the people taking part in the 216th initiative are in the Eastern hemisphere, making this time convenient. Training asides however the Division exists around the clock so that you, 71st and other pilots from the Western hemisphere can participate in the initiative whenever suitable. :)

Glad that the 216th is growing so fast !

Welcome, Xenos!

There is a dedicated TS used only for the Wednesday training, everything else happens on the BoS official server. Yesterday me and Myrio were flying for over an hour, and today there is an intercept coop at 21:00 CET. Do you want to join up? :)
