Finnish VirtualPilots - Dynamic War

Recommended Posts

For coordination among squads, I guess there should be some kind of possibility for squad leaders to share their battle plans with other squad leaders, behind a password or private forum or something like that. Casual players could still fly any side they like, but more dedicated squads could arrange strikes with escorts and things like that. Maybe could promote dedicated event days, for example Thursday or Sunday evenings, on an otherwise 24/7 server.

P.S. Have you planned any changes to the radar system?

Sharing the plans behind a password is already possible in il2missionplanner.

At least Sunday evenings are out, we fly SEOW in old Il-2 :)

Like Untamo said, radars will work the same as in previous versions. Tank bases, depots, and factories don't have radar.

I meant a way for squad leaders to kind of sign up and organize themselves.

I guess Thursday could be a good day until this Crimea SEOW is over.

Maybe you could run a poll about what type of radar system would be most preferred?

I think there are basically two options for radar: the one we have currently (i.e. using spotters) or some trigger based method where the location of the enemy planes would be reported. Do you have any other options?

I would assume >1 year with the current rate I can muster :) ... Also, this might be affected by what Team Fusion does with CloD. If CloD picks up more attention from the populace, they might steer my interest also in there :)

I don't know what is technically possible and have not looked into it at all from that point of view, but as a pilot I would prefer a system where the radar info comes as a message or possibly a marker on a map, but not a live situation of every plane that is flying in the radar range.

Yes, this would be made by trigger. There's really not that much control over what the spotter shows. I'd be happy if we could define some interval for updating the plane icons on the map, in addition to the non-IFF Untamo mentioned.

Yes, optimally it would be great if would have the options to turn IFF on/off, set the update interval, and the delay.

So for example, have the interval at 30s, with delay of 30s. So the radar contacts would update every 30s, and be already 30s old. That wouldn't give too much tactical advantage to anyone.

The trigger + icon on the map -way of doing things is basically already there with the airfield threat indicator (the red upper/lower half of the airfield ring). For that we don't have a option to change the radius, but I assume it's 10km.

... After we have finished this new version, I'm personally going to look at bringing the old-IL-2's SEOW ("Scorched Earth Online War") -system to BoX ...

You know what you have triggered here? Yes-yes-yes me-too-me-too-me-too where-is-the-kickstarter need-beer?

No joking: SEOW for a lot of virtual pilots was heaven on earth - call out for help whenever you're in need!

It still is the best online war there is.

Be careful, I just might :) ... But the SEOW project starts after:

1) I've completed this server system.

2) ...and the statistics page... one that understands the nuances of our server (capturing airfields, repair, supply etc.) :)

3) A war mission database for Finnish Virtual Pilots Association's squadrons.

...and then after that, I can start building the new SEOW implementation :) ... So don't hold your breath ;)

Hi chaps, I have not been on the server for a few months, has the number if players grown? Also, I had an idea to bring the Transport Gruppe pilots to this server. Have it so that landing 800+ paratroops alive within 2 km of the base at the front destroys the base automatically at the start of the next game(the paratroops attacking the base), and allows the German tanks to advance unopposed. This would mean that only a sizable effort with multiple flights of Ju52s can drop enough paratroops, but that if enough can survive, the German team advances. Also, the artillery in the base fires at paratroops, as do the AA when they are desending, and thus they would have to bomb the base to protect the paras. All in all, it would take a sizable effort to pull it off, which is perfect for a squadron of Ju52s, which prefer achieving tasks to getting good K:Ds and such.

We've just taken into use the new version we've been developing for about half a year. The older version didn't work so well, so the active playerbase didn't grow.

I think your proposal about the paratrooper drops is a bit one-sided, since the Russian side doesn't have access to paratrooper drops.

There are things to do for transport plane pilots on the new version mission. They can do supply and repair flights to friendly airfields, and paratrooper drops to enemy fields. Check the first post for updated description of the current system.

To illustrate where the battle advances after a tank base has been conquered by either side, we added icons to the map showing the whole tank base network:
TankBaseIcons.jpg

Note that the next tank base battle will be active after the mission rotates, and there's some randomization on which tank base battles will be taken to mission. Currently, we've set it so that four tank base battles will be taken to the mission.

Factory respawn time tuned to -> 48h. Factories (and depots) are now very important and attractive targets. Destroying them cripples the enemy airplane supply for nearby airfields and also substantially lengthens the respawn time for every unit on the map. Use the <field command to see where the target you want to attack gets its repair/supply, and destroy it before attacking the main target.

Updated the in-game depot and factory names on the map so that they have the <field command aliases in front of them, so you can query the depot/factory statuses with the aliases.

NEW: RECON PHOTOS FROM DEPOTS, FACTORIES AND AIRFIELDS!

All the 16 Depots and 10 Factories recon photos are now ready. Also there are 10 Airfields recon photos, I add the missing 20 Airfields after Summer holidays. I recommend that you save these files to your tablet or laptop (second computer) where your other additional navigation tools are. Then it is easy to find right recon photo from the target where you are going to attack!

Link to our Virtual Pilots Statistics FAQ-site where the recon photos are: http://ts3.virtualpilots.fi:8000/en/faq/

You can also download all the current pictures in one zip-file. Click the picture below and the download link appears:

I had another one of my rather bad ideas. As you can tell, the Soviets have being taking much heavier ground losses than the Axis, so maybe whenever a ground attack is spawned, it could be a random pick of 1 of 3 formations of Soviet tanks. The first Soviet tank formation might be comprised of 20 BT-7s or 20 T-70s(a light tank attack). The second could be an attack by 15 T-34s(a Medium tank attack). The last one would be an attack by 10 KV-1s, which will pretty much shrug off AT fire(until the 75mm gun becomes common in game). This could provide a counterweigh to the German paras, and since there are more players flying German and less Soviets, it would help make it easier for the Soviets to take a base if they happen to get the KV-1s. The Germans, on the other hand, can get 20 Panzer 38ts, 15 Panzer 3s or 10 Panzer 4s. This would mean that their attacks would be weaker, and thus would require that some of the defenses be killed by aircraft.

This would be an idea to consider, if the dserver could handle the amount of objects this requires. :)

Il-2 AM-38F (model 1943) and Spitfire Mk.VВ added to server.

Corrected one Russian translation.

Also changed Durability of Ammo and Fuel static blocks to 2000.

Lowered the AI of AAA on tank bases to "Normal".

The possible weather conditions were changed too. Now there is lower possibility of overcast or heavy clouds, and the minimum cloud altitude was set to 1000 m on light cloud weather and 1500 m for other cloud weather (was 300).

Had a lot of fun flying Ho Chi Minh Pe-2 supply flights to an airfield under attack below a raging bunch of Focke-Wulf fighter bombers.

You might want to check depot D15, Peredel, sector A. While sector C showed the expected reaction after 2 x 500 kg that sector A was able to ignore 4 of them, strange.

On next weekend we have our annual Mosquito Meeting 2017 in Nivala, Finland. There are a lot of us flying, speaking, drinking, eating, saunaing, swimming and...

WAITING FOR RUSSIAN ENEMIES to fight against us on Friday and Saturday evenings after 21:00 (gmt+3). We are going to make some big Junkers 88 bombing raids with the Bf 109 G-2 escort. So please welcome to fight against us, now there are plenty of native Finns flying in our server!

Was this around 0:38 EET when the server jammed? I checked the German Peredel depot, and all those blocks have Durability set to what it should be.

Yes, that crash might be the reason. For the first run against that target 500 kg hits were registered - but all the damage was below 50%, so no success was displayed. Second run against D15-A wasn't registered at all - no problem.

I'll try to fly Red, but there's FNBF already ... let's see

I might be able to set off a few tank attacks before your strike, so maybe we can push the communists further back! Has the community of pilots on the server increased?

Tha population is growing every week. On sunday there were up to 16-18 pilots and every day over 10. On next weekend there are huge of us! ;)

Really enjoyed playing here, usually pretty quiet when I'm on, but great for practicing ground pounding, with some occasional thrilling combat. I don't understand why this server isn't more popular. I love the long mission timers, and being able to fly pretty much whatever you wan't whenever you want.

I've recently turned off all my hud items through settings except for chat, so am having to learn to use instruments only for things like radiators, and prop pitch /rpm, flap settings etc. Its a really good environment to familiarize myself with each aircraft.

Glad that you like it. It is quite typical that we have lower numbers on the server while it is summer. In the autumn it usually lightens up again :) ... The server had a quite good numbers when we had the old system running, but the numbers also aggravated the existing problems we had. Let's just hope we get to the "critical mass" again soon. When you get 20+ people on the server, more will usually follow very fast :)

Hehe, summer drives us finns outside so there is usually less virtual flying :)

Is this still a full real server ? I was seeing friendlies marked on the map last night

Yes it is. You probably saw planes in the radar circles near airfields. Airfields have 10km radius radar. The radar can be destroyed, it is a small cabin with an antenna on top of it. Really helps your attack if there are human players on the defense :)

It's a great server! And deserves a much bigger crowd. When I played it a few months ago I got kick out of flying past my tanks advancing. What a sight.

Reason I stopped visiting was that when I saw 12 guys online in the lobby, once I joined usually realized all 12 were on axis side with zero on Red. I do understand why the Llv boys prefer to fly axis with Finnish skins. But have things gotten more even lately?

Joined yesterday for a quick sortie. Had fun, got lost and took me 30 minutes finding my way home :) Also, for me it was the first time red team had superior numbers here.
