Finding the cause of a random crash issue (Special Thread #1)

Recommended Posts

Since updating my Nvidia drivers I can now play this game for about an hour or so, then Windows restarts!  Very odd.

I will probably regret writing this.

CTD reports have been coming in almost daily, even since hotfix 1.201d on the 7th.  Many days have had several reports.  The last CTD report however was made for a crash five days ago (me).  In April (since 1.201) I have had six CTDs with the last being on the 16th.  The average number of sorties between CTDs was 10, the longest being 15.  I haven't had any CTDs since the 16th (5 days) and have flown 32 sorties.  Woohoo!!

So there, now I have probably jinxed it.  Fingers crossed.

I`m ok as long as I don`t go into my controller settings.... `So don`t go into your controller settings!` says the Doctor!

I am expecting my throttle quadrant tomorrow and suspect my crashes will go through the roof when I try to configure them.

Crash dump files below.

Configuring my CH throtlle quadrant to my mixer, water rads, oil, etc, resulted in many crashes to desktop (ctd).

This was especially worse when going into Settings> Engine Controls>Engine 1 properller RPM> Deazones high\low. Any and all adjusting of these zones resulted in constant ctds.

I managed to eventually set the controls, after which it ctd`d, but it it remembered the setting. It took quite a few hours of persisntence and restarts to finally achieve this.

There were about 10 + crashes, I include the last couple.

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);  MP

In what mission; WOL Stalingrad - Winter map

What did you do before the crash;  I was high level in contrails in a Yak, ~5km.  No aircraft around.  Had been in the mission about 10 minutes.

What happened in the mission before the crash;  Was viewing various areas around me with Zoom in/out and snap view, in conjunction with TrackIR 3 6DoF, software version 5.4.1.26786.

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.  Several of my CTDs, in MP only, have happened when I am doing nothing except viewing around me using TrackIR, the Pilot head: zoom in/zoom out controls and various Pilot head snap positions.  Makes me wonder if there may be something incompatible in their combined use with TrackIR.  I use all the game default keystrokes for the Pilot Head Controls which are mapped to a CH Pro Throttle using Total Game Control v3.7.  The only Hotkey I have activated in TrackIR is the F5 for Center.  Currently using Windows 7.

Here's 2 crash dump files.

I had both crashes while flying in multiplayer (Wings of Liberty), 12276 occured while I was diving in my Il-2 Sturmovik mod 1941

First one occured on Stalingrad Summer map and the second one on Stalingrad autumn map.

I dont remember anything special happening exept we destroyed some ground targets with our IL-2 group before i got the second one and I shot down an He-111 before the first one and was heading home.

Here's the log that corresponds to the first one:

I am having random crashes to desktop during play.

  • When you encountered the crash;
    This weekend on Wings of Liberty.
  • In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);
    MP
  • In what mission;
    Several different MP missions.
  • What did you do before the crash;
    Some times on the map screen, but mostly in play. Anything from 30 seconds to 30 minutes in. The crashes are very frequent.
  • What happened in the mission before the crash;
    Nothing special. It happened in random situations.
  • Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.
    The error seems to occur after the release of the newest Nvidia driver. Also the event reports a driver file from nvidia as part of the error(nvd3dumx.dll). I have tried doing a uninstall and clean install of the drivers, clean install of the game, installing and repairing the redistributables (dx and dotnet etc.), but the problem is still there. Other games seem to play fine without crashes.

    I added the event file as well as my DxDiag in the zip, in case there is any info you can use.

I also reported this at the Nvidia forums, in case it is a problem solely on their end.

Best,

Klas

Game is still crashing in the controller settings section even after all the patches. In fact, I can`t even start the second Stalingrad campaign  (prelude) without it crashing while going to the flying screen.

Will keep trying to get it working and post a crash dump when I can.

This thread has been created to find the cause of the random game crashing with the community help.
Game version 1.107b and later is required for submitting crash dumps.

Please post only the data requested and avoid off-topic discussion.

1. To enable Windows Error Reporting, run (double-click) this log file:
<install_folder>\data\EnableErrorReporting.reg
2. In a case of the game crash open the folder where crash dumps are stored, you can do this by running this batch file:
<install_folder>\data\ViewCrashDumps.cmd
3. Sort the dump files by date to find a newest one
4. Zip the newest dump file "Il-2.exe.****.dmp" (**** is a random number)
5. Post about the crash in this thread, attach the archive you just made and provide some details:
  • When you encountered the crash;
  • In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);
  • In what mission;
  • What did you do before the crash;
  • What happened in the mission before the crash;
  • Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.

Just started game, went straight into settings> key mapping> Engines mixture control> input responses> Deadzone. Tried adjusting deadzone from 0% to around 10-12%- Instant crash to desktop. Repeatable.

Crash dump enclosed.

I have not had a CTD since the 2.001 updates.  Although not a CTD, here is something different that happened that was similar to the freeze with sound that used to occur.

Date.time:  May 23, ~2300 EDT  (0300 UTC)

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);  MP

In what mission; WOL Stalingrad - autumn map

What did you do before the crash;  I was flying a Yak-1 at ~4km.  Had been in the mission about ~10 minutes.

What happened in the mission before the crash;  I was flying checking my six and two rear quads with snap views when the screen went black and the sound continued.  I assumed it was the previous type of hang.  I let the screen stay up for several seconds to see if I would receive a CTD.  No CTD occurred, so I did a Cntrl-Alt-Del.  When I clicked on Start Task Manager to see if IL2 BOS was responding I was taken back to the game and into my plane.  My plane was in a rapid right hand descent which I was able to recover from.  The balance of the sortie was completed as normal.

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.  In-game settings:
Setting:  Ultra
Screen resolution: 1920 x 1080 (native res 2560 X 1440)
Full screen: On
VSync: On
Multi GPU Support: OFF

SSAO: OFF

HDR: OFF
FPS limiter: OFF
Antialiasing: 4x
Gamma correction: 1.0

When you encountered the crash: Directly after clicking the start button, the screen was still black.

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario) QMB, weather set to overcast

In what mission See above. Map and season do not seem to matter. I tried Stalingrad summer, winter, and Moscow Autumn

What did you do before the crash: Started the game (off-line mode), when to QMB, picked an airfield, let the weather options as they were (overcast), I clicked "start". The mission loaded, then I clicked "Start" on the mission map/briefing screen. Then the game crashed.

What happened in the mission before the crash: Absolutely nothing. Not even a single frame was rendered.

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash: Overcast weather causes the crash.

Yes I am crashing from the black screen right after clicking Start.

It doesn't happen very often. And yes when I re-run the mission I'm sure the campaign generates a different one. So what exact circumstances there are, I don't know. Maybe it's contained in the log files.
