Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik Mission Pack

Recommended Posts

I have uploaded my Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik mission pack for BoS (12 missions + 7 skins) at Axis and Allies Paintworks:
http://www.axis-and-allies-paintworks.com/download.php?view.913

The Platzschutzstaffel (airfield defence squadron), commanded by Hauptmann Rudolf Germeroth, was a detachment of volunteers from Jagdgeschwader 3, based at Pitomnik airfield inside the Stalingrad pocket. The unit's primary task was to protect the airfield and the transport planes bringing supplies and evacuating the wounded, but also freehunt and reconnaissance escort missions were flown. Due to the lack of spare parts and the harsh conditions at Stalingrad often not more than three Bf-109s were serviceable at the same time and many missions were flown by just two planes. Nonetheless the units pilots claimed more than 100 Soviet aircraft shot down during this time.
On 16 January 1943 Pitomnik was captured by the Red Army and the men of the Platzschutzstaffel escaped to Gumrak airfield. Over the following days the pilots were evacuated by plane, but most of the ground crews were left behind and became prisoners when the 6th Army surrendered on 2 February 1943.

All the missions are based on real events. I have tried to make them as historically accurate as possible.  To determine the time and locations of air battles shown in the missions I've used the Gradnetz-coordinates from the official Luftwaffe victory reports and some of the missions are based on the personal records of Kurt Ebener, who scored more than 30 victories during his time at Pitomnik.

I have made no attempts to balance the missions, so in most of them just two German planes will face a much larger number of Soviet aircraft. The primary goal in all missions is to survive and to land back at Pitomnik airfield. To be succesfull always try to attack with a height and speed advantage. Avoid prolonged dogfights with enemy fighters, instead use the superior speed of the Bf-109 to escape once you have lost the initiative in a fight.

Attention - There is also a Platzschutzstaffel campaign with new and reworked missions:

I have flown the first 2 missions. I normally favour the Russian aircraft and very rarely fly German. However, I have just completed the first 2 of your missions and will definately be flying the remainder. Bloody well done Juri. Muchos grassy arse for your efforts and for sharing sharing the results with the rest of us.

Thank you guys. At the moment I am researching the activities of the Platzschutzstaffel on 10 January when the Red Army launched Operation Koltso, maybe this will produce one or two new missions I can add to the pack in version 1.1.
Moreover I've just noticed, that I forgot to replace the He-111s with Ju-52s in the 2nd mission. This will be fixed in the future.

Love the historical nature of these missions and very sobering when you think about the odds they faced.

Cheers

Hi Juri,

Just started playing your pack after completing unlocks for g2. Really enjoying these historical missions, I just try to survive. Gives some feeling of what a struggle it was, a great achievement given I can enjoy these in front of my computer in a heated room.

Thanks again for your efforts,

Zj

I have uploaded the 1.1 version of the mission pack.
http://www.axis-and-allies-paintworks.com/download.php?view.897

What's new?
- One new mission.
- A new Bf-109G2 skin.
- Briefings are now available in German too.
- Numerous minor improvements to existing missions.
- Some changes to the briefings.

The new mission, called "Operation Koltso", has many random elements and will be different everytime it's played. For me this was a test to see how well such highly randomized missions work. Maybe I will use the concept in the future in a new mission pack.

If you already have the 1.0 version of the mission pack, please first delete the old 'Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik' mission folder before you install the new version .

I wasn't aware of this missionpack until Juri announced it 2 days ago in the german section of the Forum. I really missed it.

I performed the first mission yesterday evening and it was great fun and a pleasure to zoom down on the Peshka squadron on our way into the cauldron and Pitomnik airfield.

Looking forward for the rest of the missions.

Thanks for Your effort Juri! This is very much appreciated!:)

Thank you for the kind words guys.

At the moment I am thinking about my next mission building project. Over the last weeks I have read "Il-2 Shturmovik Guards Units of World War 2", so I might do a pack of Sturmovik missions. The events described in the book could be a good basis for building some historical missions.
At the moment I am looking for information where the different Sturmovik units were based during the battle of Stalingrad. If someone knows, where such information can be found I would be really grateful.

Using books and first hand storys of those who fought back then is in my oppinion the best possible source for creating missions. It adds so much to the athmosphere compared to sterile and not so interesting campaign missions. After more thean a year of relentless and excessive BoS simming, I got bored at the end of 2014 from BoS. But guys like You and Veteran are saving the day for us SP guys! :)

I agree with this : juri, veteran and other good mission creators brought 90% of the SP interest

+1 thanks so much for these missions Jurie. On the forum we have an expert on the il2 his name is Learstang (Jason Moore)..see under custom skins il2 topic. I also think if i read correctly that he released his own book on the il2 the red avenger, see amazon currently out of stock it must have gone like a hot cakes. I think you have hit the nail on the head with the il2. Thanks again.

Thanks a lot LukeFF, that's exactly what I need. Where did you find that information?

Thanks a lot LukeFF, that's exactly what I need. Where did you find that information?

It came from this book here: http://www.amazon.com/Stalingrad-Air-Battle-1942-January-1943/dp/1857802764/ref=sr_1_13?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1432186005&sr=1-13

It's the best single volume on the Stalingrad air war I have seen - which is not surprising, given that it's written by one of the Black Cross / Red Star authors.

Here the first screenshots from my current project, a Sturmovik mission pack. Three missions are already finished, for the rest I will need the Stalingrad summer/autumn maps. Let's hope that we will get the new maps soon so that I can continue my work.

Looking forward to flying it.

Thanks for your work, Juri!

Defending Pitomnik,

I lost one aileron (an Pe-2 shot it off) and after spending all my ammo did an emergency landing...

Thanks Juri!

I've uploaded the 1.2 version of my Platzschutzstaffel mission pack, that will work with game version 1.101, the older versions of the missions are no longer playable!

Because the developers don't want to give us a proper debriefing screen for single missions, I've decided to create my own screen, that will appear after landing and shows enemy and friendly losses in the mission. The quite complex stat function of the debriefing screen comes from Veteran's missions, who kindly allowed me to use his work and adjust it for my purposes.

The debriefing system isn't able to show the player's individual victories, so I hope it is just a temporary solution till we get a real debriefings/stat feature in single player mission mode.

The briefing screen doesn't work if you have the entire HUD hidden (h-key).

Here's an example how the debriefing screen should look if everything is working properly.
