Question on campaign

Recommended Posts

I've been playing through the campaign on Normal.

My question is - why am I automatically leading the flight? Should I not be one of the wingmen? I also noticed that the campaign doesn't follow other personalised campaigns ie. where you start at a junior rank and then work your way up (or die!) to flight leader, then squadron leader, etc. Or am I expecting too much from this campaign?

if this is available on expert modes, let me know.

I really like playing the campaign. Its nice to be able to jump in and fly whatever I want... on the other hand I would like some more variety and depth to the missions and the way they are planned.

There's also a few headscratchers. I shouldn't be sent out as a 1 plane "formation" to intercept a half dozen bombers with fighter escort.

Yeah it seems like its a placeholder unfortunately. eg. intercept missions - a 3 plane flight to take on a two plane bomber formation incl escort? Should be more like 2 flights (8 or so) vs 4 flights of bombers + escort or something at the very least.

There's no patrol type missions where you could stumble upon enemy a/c, etc.

Shame because the devs will be straight into BOM. Hopefully the community can create some user made campaigns.

I'm assuming/hoping that developing the single player for BOM will mean that we'll get some retroactive improvements to the way that the Stalingrad campaign plays out as well. Its not too unreasonable an assumption...

And some more here

http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/14893-missions-sharing-corner/

There is an upcoming Mini Campaign by Juri_JS who should be known for his huge amount of work in original IL-2 campaigns with some teasers on that page

and five other teaser missions from two other campaigns by other users

and people wanting a different approach for SP should look here

http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/14672-release-simple-3rd-party-mission-builder-bos/

I believe Heinkill is making some campaign using this tool.

And for something completely different this could yield something very interesting for SP if someone looked into adapting  it

M4T has announced a dedicated slot for BoS Campaigns/Missions, so as more become available they will have a familiar Download home

Here you find some User made Missions for BoS:

http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/13912-veteranenmissions/

the BoS Missions Editor is powerful but a hard nut :)

Give the User some time to make own missions, look my missions as examples.

It's not super easy if you want to create groups from scratch but since there are people who are uploading links to groups mission building got a whole lot easier. I managed to build a co-op mission by modifying groups other people made and by doing that learned how to make my own groups.

Like IL2 mission building is very satisfying and to the people complaining about the lack of missions....well they know what to do :D If I can do it then anyone can!

Cheers

Emil

Even though I know MP is the way to go, I still love playing SP campaigns/careers. I'd have to say, my favourite has always been Aces over Europe. I'm really hoping the devs actually properly build a campaign ie.

- you sign up as a junior pilot with a junior rank, flying #4

- the more you fly (and get kills) the more experience, etc you get resulting in promotion to section lead then flight lead

- you should either sign up as a fighter pilot (LaGG, etc), FB pilot (IL2) or bomber pilot (PE-2) and all your missions should be around that (same for the Luftwaffe)

- the missions should be a combination of focused (eg. attack x target, intercept, etc) and generic (patrol x, y and z) and we should be given the mission, not be allowed to choose it

- you don't need a 'back story'. We make our own.

- you should get upgrades as they came out IRL

- you should be able to request a transfer to a fighter or FB squadron, or FB to a bomber squadron (which can be denied) or be transferred anyway on a needs basis

the question is... by whom - BoS is done except for the Ju-52, and the FMB does not spawn any missions or campaigns even after 4 months of existence...

a bit confusing... to me.

BoS...BoM... its the same engine and the two are linked at the hip. Improvements to one will in many cases filter over to the other. BoM adds content while development continues on core technologies that affect both.

Seeing as development continues on multi-season maps for BoS it seems contrary to say that BoS is done completely and recent patches adding new things like the oxygen subsystem also suggest otherwise.

Great ideas, and probably what many SP players want and would enjoy.  For many SP players combat flight sims are not all about mastering pilot skills, they are just as much about the experience of flying in a war.

Thanks mate, but those ideas above are just what I've seen from over 30 years of flight simming! :P Aces over Europe had by far the best career/campaign and thats where I got the above from ie. you signed up from 1941 onwards and got to choose between fighter (Spit, Hurri, P47, P51, P38) and FB (Typhoon, Tempest, Mossie) and you would get upgrades in a/c (eg. Spit V - VI - IX - XV, etc) based on historical dates and stuff. You could transfer to other Sqdns or be transferred. One of the other things they had was the ability to simulate where your a/c would fly along the planned route and would only jump out of sim if you got attacked or came across a/c, ran out of fuel etc. Happened quite quickly so you could get a lot of missions done instead of having to sit there for 10 mins real time!

Even though its dated now, it still sits in my memory as 'the best'! :) Sometimes its nice to be able to fly missions where you realise you're only one a/c in a whole battlefield and the whole war doesn't rest on your actions! lol.

I'm really hoping the devs will develop something like the above for IL2. Combat sims always had a large offline (SP) community.

*edit*

Just to continue on the above, I always found campaigns that really immersed you and didn't just hand you points for 'showing up' (eg. Battlefield 3 upgrades) were the best...you worked hard for that upgrade.

One thing that definitely needs to be adjusted is the number of a/c on a mission - as someone pointed out above, you don't send out a flight of 3 fighters out unless they're flying at night or at low level or whatever...you send out a Squadron!! Similarly, you don't send out two He-111s with two BF109s as escort deep into enemy territory...thats just madness. We need proper aerial battles or melee's with up to atleat 30 a/c.

While I would love to see occasional much larger battles, it was actually quite common for much smaller units - typically 4 fighters for the germans, but sometimes even a pair - to be sent out in the E front. The reason was the large number of planes becoming and staying non-operational from battle losses, accidents and spare parts shortages, combined with the high demand for air activity, meant that units had to spread their planes much more thinly than they would have liked in order to provide some air cover.

I do agree that using bombers in penny packets makes less sense - unless they are doing photo recce.
