G6, MG 151/20, DB 605

Recommended Posts

Hello gents, Griffin from Eagle Dynamics forums reporting in. Really looking forward to this sim and might pre-order it this month.

I just visited the aviation museum today here in Vantaa, Finland. They have a temporary "Messers in Finland 70 years" exhibition where they borrowed one of the two surviving Messerschmitts in Finland from it's home in Utti. Shame I missed the one day when they brought a StuG from armor museum there too. I took some pictures especially of the engine and the cannon, something you don't see everyday. Hopefully you'll find them interesting!

The MG 151/20 is bolted to the rear of the engine and fires between the cylinder blocks through the propeller shaft.

Yep, it's the Gustav's fist!

I believe the cartridges are into this hole on the left side.

And the business end! The views through the propeller shaft. Sorry, it was difficult to get a good shot with top mounted flash.

And finally, the hero of the house.

The cannon through the propeller hub was a deadly weapon indeed, due to accuraccy and reliability. In fact, that is exacly why the MG151/20 or later the MK108 were given such amazing fame. At the early versions of the 109 (C1-E4) the gun through the prop hub would be more of a uneccessary item because the weaker DB600 engine wold vibrate too much, plus the fact that most E3/4 versions would have already two 20mm autocannons in the wing.

However it was preety handy in the F,G,and K series, and yet some units would have gunpods in the wing to achieve even greater firepower.

I hope this helps!

By the way I have noticed that this 109 is a Bf 109/G-10, but... Why does it have the desert air cooling device installed?

sorry, a G6, not G10
