&description="The medal 'Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42' was instituted on May 26, 1942. It was awarded to those who had served during the winter campaign period of November 15, 1941 to April 15, 1942 in the area eastward of Ukraine and Ostland or in the Finnish operational area east of the Finnish / Russo border of 1940. The criteria for the award included the following:

- For ground troops, a minimum of 2 weeks of combat action.
- For flight personnel, at least 30 days of flying over enemy-held territory.
- For being wounded in action or suffering a frozen limb, which resulted in the awarding of a Wound Badge.
- For serving at least 60 continuous days in the combat zone. 

In addition to German military personnel, the medal could also be awarded to civilians, foreign volunteers in the Wehrmacht, and civilians working in factories in the defined operational areas. Those who had been killed in action or listed as missing were also authorized to receive the medal. Around 3 million persons were awarded the medal by the time it stopped being awarded in September 1944."
