&name="Tuskegee Airmen"

&description=" The establishment of the Tuskegee Airmen was hastened with a visit from President Roosevelt's wife Eleanor, to the flight training facility in Tuskegee, Alabama in March of 1941. Following a flight with a black instructor, Eleanor, upon returning to Washington D.C., informed her husband that she had flown with those boys down in Tuskegee and you're going to have to do something about it. By August of 1942 5 classes had graduated from Tuskegee, enough to form a squadron, the 99th FS, the first black squadron in U.S. history, with Lt. Col. Benjamin Davis appointed its commander.

The 99th FS was initially deployed to North Africa, then on to Sicily and Italy and eventually to Europe. The exploits of these young men were truly exceptional in that they not only had to fight a determined enemy but had to endure the prejudice and bias of senior officers and of an organization that didn't believe blacks could fly and fight. The missions contained in this campaign represent the types of missions these young men flew in the various theaters in which they were deployed. In addition they also flew several types of fighter aircraft, including the P-40, the P-47, the P-39 and the P-51 all of which are represented in this campaign.

Knowing that many of the followers of IL-2 are avid historians I hope this campaign encourages further research into the exploits of this fascinating group of Americans.

Campaign by: Falcon41"
